A simple and highly reproducible dot-immunoblot assay was developed to detect leishmanial antigen in Phlebotomus argentipes that were naturally infected with Leishmania donovani. The test was sensitive to as little as 10 ng of antigenic protein (equivalent to the gut content of one laboratory-infected sandfly) and also appeared to be specific, in that it gave a positive result with some P. argentipes (the primary vector of L. donovani in India) and L. donovani but not with P. papatasi or other pathogens. When used to investigate a large number of sandflies collected from two areas of the India

Lutzomyia umbratilis is the main vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania guyanensis in northern South America. It has been found naturally infected with this species of Leishmania only east of the Rio Negro and north of the Rio Amazonas. However, populations of this sand fly species are also present in areas south of the Amazon river system, which may act as a geographical barrier to the Leishmania guyanensis cycle. With the aim of looking for possible biological differences between populations of L. umbratilis from each side of this river system, their biology in the laboratory wa

A two-year study was conducted of phlebotomine sand fly fauna in a defined focus of Leishmania tropica. A total of 17,947 sand flies representing 10 species were collected from the location. Phlebotomus guggisbergi, a vector of L. tropica in Kenya, was the most prevalent species through the entire period, representing about 80% of the total catch. There was marked seasonal fluctuation in the populations of the three most common species, with highest population levels reached in December and lowest levels reached in July and August. Leishmania-like infections were encountered in 489 P. guggisbe

Phlebotomine sand flies are responsible for transmitting Leishmania (Ross, 1903) species, the etiological agents of leishmaniases, causing impacts on global public health, especially in northeastern Brazil. The state of Rio Grande do Norte has been recording cases of the disease compulsorily since the 1980s, and the last comprehensive and systematic survey of phlebotomine species was completed in 1997. Since then, new infected species have been identified in the country. Our objectives are to update the inventory of phlebotomine species in Rio Grande do Norte , analyze the natural infection by

INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, the sandfly species' greatest diversity and richness is concentrated in the Amazon region. This is also the greatest diversity of causative agents of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL). The present study aimed to identify aspects of the sandfly fauna and the detection of Leishmania in the forest extraction area in the municipality of Xapuri, Acre, Western Amazon, complementing previous studies that were undertaken in the same region.
METHODS: To collect the insects, four methods were used. These were Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) type light traps

Northern Morocco is endemic for cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Our entomological investigations aim to evaluate the risk of Leishmania transmission by determining the species composition, the density, and seasonal fluctuation of sand fly populations in endemic and nonendemic areas of leishmaniasis in Tetouan province (North-Western Morocco). Using Sticky-paper traps, 8,370 specimens were collected between May and November 2015 in two localities: peri-urban area of Tetouan city, where leishmaniasis is endemic and that of the Oued Laou village where no cases of leishmaniasis have been rec

Phlebotomine sandflies are bloodsucking insects responsible for the transmission of leishmaniasis. The average annual incidence in Morocco, of this pathology, was approximately estimated in 2014 as 7.8 per 100.000 inhabitants according to the Moroccan health information service records. The study of the composition of the Phlebotomian community and its seasonal dynamics are essential for determining the appropriate and adequate means of control at the prefecture of Meknes in Central Morocco. It is with this in mind that two capture sessions per month using sticky paper traps were conducted at

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis has long been endemic in Israel. In recent years reported incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis increased and endemic transmission is being observed in a growing number of communities in regions previously considered free of the disease. Here we report the results of an intensive sand fly study carried out in a new endemic focus of Leishmania major. The main objective was to establish a method and to generate a data set to determine the exposure risk, sand fly populations' dynamics and evaluate the efficacy of an attempt to create "cordon sanitaire"

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomines are directly related to the study of leishmaniases, and so the study of their distribution plays an important role in the epidemiology of these diseases. Collections of phlebotomines were made with the intent of comparing the distribution, richness, diversity, and abundance of species in three distinct environments in an area endemic for tegumentary and visceral leishmaniasis in Minas Gerais State, Brazil.
METHODS: Phlebotomines were collected with automatic light traps in urban, transitional, and wild areas from March 2013 to February 2014 in the district of Barra d

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is now the main vector-borne disease in Iran. Two forms of the disease exist in the country, transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi and Phlebotomus sergenti s.l. Modeling distribution of the vector species is beneficial for preparedness and planning to interrupt the transmission cycle. Data on sand fly distribution during 1990-2013 were used to predict the niche suitability. MaxEnt algorithm model was used for prediction using bioclimatic and environmental variables (precipitation, temperature, altitude, slope, and aspect). Regularized training, area under the curve,

BACKGROUND: Sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are the vectors of Leishmania parasites, the causative agents of leishmaniasis. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an increasing public health problem in the Republic of Suriname and is mainly caused by Leishmania (Vianna) guyanensis, but L. (V.) braziliensis, L. (L.) amazonensis, and L. (V.) naiffi also infect humans. Transmission occurs predominantly in the forested hinterland of the country. Information regarding the potential vectors of leishmaniasis in Suriname is limited. This study aims to broaden the knowledge about vectors involved in the transmis

BACKGROUND: Laboratory studies of host-seeking olfactory behaviour in sandflies have largely been restricted to the American visceral leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis. In comparison, almost nothing is known about the chemical ecology of related species, which transmit American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL), due in part to difficulties in raising these insects in the laboratory. Understanding how ACL vectors locate their hosts will be essential to developing new vector control strategies to combat this debilitating disease.
METHODS: This study examined host-odour seeking behaviour of

Saliva plays important roles in facilitation of a bloodmeal, lubrication of mouthparts, and parasite transmission for some vector insects. Salivary composition changes during the lifetime of an insect, and differences in the salivary profile may influence its functions. In this report, the amount and profile of salivary gland protein of the American visceral leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) were analyzed at different times of insect development and diet. Protein content from unfed female sand flies increased significantly with age, and a significant difference wa
