Complementary and Alternative Medicine Therapies in relation to Self-Reported Better Sleep across Racial and Ethnic Groups in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) approaches vary across race and ethnicity, reflecting different cultural practices. However, its relationship with sleep is understudied. We investigated cross-sectional CAM-sleep associations across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS: In the nationally-representative 2012 National Health Interview Survey, participants identified their most important CAM therapies and whether the therapy yielded 'better sleep' (yes/no). We used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence interv

Optimal dose and type of exercise to improve cognitive function in adults with major depressive disorder: a systematic review and Bayesian model-based network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment is a core feature of major depressive disorder (MDD) that often persists during remission, significantly affecting psychosocial functioning. While exercise is known to alleviate depressive symptoms, its specific impact on cognitive domains remains variable. This study aims to evaluate the dose-response relationship and comparative effectiveness of different types of exercise interventions on cognitive function in adults with MDD. METHODS: Five electronic databases (Ovid Medline, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and Embase) were systematically sear

Exercises for mechanical neck disorders: A Cochrane review update.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain (NP) is disabling and costly. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of exercise on pain, disability, function, patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL) and global perceived effect (GPE) in adults with NP. METHODS: We searched computerised databases up to May 2014 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing exercise to a control in adults with NP with/without cervicogenic headache (CGH) or radiculopathy. Two reviewers independently conducted selection, data abstraction and assessed risk of bias. Meta-analyses were performed to establish pooled standardised mea

Effect of 12-week head-down strong abdominal breathing on cognitive function in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a single-centre randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often suffer from a combination of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and a significant reduction in their quality of life. In the exercise programme of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), pulmonary rehabilitation intervention is often carried out by enhancing respiratory function. Strong abdominal breathing is a kind of breathing method, through which the diaphragm can be exercised, thereby enhancing the deflection distance of the diaphragm during breathing and improving respiratory function. The inversion trainer can meet the dif

The superiority trial of Baduanjin training on patients chronic low back pain: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: CNSLBP accounts for 85% of all LBP cases and impairs physical health, quality of life, and work productivity, posing a significant health and economic burden. Baduanjin (BDJ) exercises are traditional Chinese Qi Gong mind-body exercises that have been practiced for over 1,000 years. However, the standard BDJ protocol established by the State Sports General Administration does not stimulate core muscles, limiting the effectiveness of low back pain rehabilitation. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the original BDJ protocol. METHODS: This 24-week single-center, single-blind, para

Alternative Therapies in the Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinical arrhythmia and represents a major social and economic problem. The number of subjects with AF is constantly increasing as a result of aging and improved survival in several cardiac and non-cardiac diseases. Patients with AF are often symptomatic, have a reduced physical capacity and are at high risk for thromboembolic events. Moreover, AF is associated with increased mortality and independent of the management, based either on rhythm or rate control strategy. The safety and efficacy of most anti-arrhythmic drugs are questionable. Increasing

Rediscovery of a seventh sense: humans produce, perceive, and process ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: We present novel evidence that humans are capable of producing, perceiving, and cortically processing ultrasound (US), extending the recognized limits of human auditory function. This previously unacknowledged sensory ability was identified in an expert practitioner of the traditional Chinese health exercise "The Six Healing Sounds. METHODS AND RESULTS: High-resolution recordings demonstrated deliberate vocal emissions reaching up to 35 kHz, with nearly one third of the acoustic energy residing in the ultrasonic range. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) revealed a distinct cortical re
