UV radiation transmittance: regular clothing versus sun-protective clothing.

There are many clothing options available for patients who are interested in limiting their exposure to UV radiation; however, these options can be confusing for patients. For dermatologists, there is limited clinical data regarding the advantages, if any, of sun-protective clothing. In this study, we examined the UV radiation transmittance of regular clothing versus sun-protective clothing. We found that regular clothing may match or even exceed sun-protective clothing in blocking the transmittance of UV radiation. These data will help dermatologists better counsel their patients on clothing

Solar radiation induced skin damage: review of protective and preventive options.

PURPOSE: Solar energy has a number of short- and long-term detrimental effects on skin that can result in several skin disorders. The aim of this review is to summarise current knowledge on endogenous systems within the skin for protection from solar radiation and present research findings to date, on the exogenous options for such skin photoprotection. RESULTS: Endogenous systems for protection from solar radiation include melanin synthesis, epidermal thickening and an antioxidant network. Existing lesions are eliminated via repair mechanisms. Cells with irreparable damage undergo apoptosis.

Pyridoxamine protects intestinal epithelium from ionizing radiation-induced apoptosis.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive carbonyl species (RCS) are the major causes of biological tissue damage during exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). The existing strategies to protect normal tissues from the detrimental effects of IR suffer from several shortcomings including highly toxic side effects, unfavorable administration routes, and low efficacy. These shortcomings emphasize a need for radioprotective treatments that combine effectiveness with safety and ease of use. In this paper, we demonstrate that pyridoxamine, a ROS and RCS scavenger with a very favorable safety profile,

Shielding properties of lead-free protective clothing and their impact on radiation doses.

The shielding properties of two different lead-free materials-tin and a compound of 80% tin and 20% bismuth-for protective clothing are compared with those of lead for three typical x-ray spectra generated at tube voltages of 60, 75, and 120 kV. Three different quantities were used to compare the shielding capability of the different materials: (1) Air-kerma attenuation factors in narrow-beam geometry, (2) air-kerma attenuation factors in broad-beam geometry, and (3) ratios of organ and effective doses in the human body for a whole-body irradiation with a parallel beam directed frontally at th

Skin component may protect fishes from ultraviolet-B radiation.

We observed a large peak of absorbance when methanol extracts of dorsal skin from four species of fish were scanned in a spectro-photometer. There appeared to be a direct relation between the amount of this skin component and the period of time in which each species of fish developed UVB-induced sunburn.

Protective effect of selenium against ionizing radiation-induced malformations in mice.

A single dose of sodium selenite (0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.) was injected intraperitoneally into mice on day 9 of pregnancy, either 30 min or 2 h before 1.75 Gy whole body irradiation. Administration of selenite 2 h but not 30 min before irradiation resulted in a significant decrease in the number of malformed foetuses (p less than 0.005). The decrease in foetal malformations occurred proportionally for all the major malformations observed, i.e. short or kinked tail, rib and vertebral malformations, coloboma and deformation of retina and iris. In addition, selenium pretreatment also protected against

Workflow-Based Radiation Protection During In-house 18F-FDG Production at a Hospital-based Cyclotron Facility.

Automation limits operator contact during routine 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) production, but residual manual tasks and nonroutine interventions may still determine occupational exposure. This study quantified workflow-specific effective dose during in-house FDG production at a hospital-based cyclotron facility. Production records from 39 batches performed from 4 July to 23 August 2024 were reviewed. Two radiological technologists were monitored during seven routine production sessions, and five pharmacists were monitored during 10 quality-control (QC) observations. Semiconductor electronic p

Evidence-based lifestyle guidance can complement radiological protection - reducing radiation-related cancer risk through lifestyle modification.

Radiological protection primarily manages exposure, yet public concern often focuses on health outcomes after exposure has occurred. This can foster fatalistic interpretations that cancer risk becomes fixed once a dose is received, contributing to anxiety and impaired well-being. Here we argue that such fatalism is not warranted: cancer risk is inherently conditional and depends on multiple determinants operating over time. Building on contemporary concepts of multistage carcinogenesis, radiation can contribute to initiation and may also influence promotion/progression through tissue responses

Plant polysaccharides mitigate ionizing radiation injury via multi-tissue protection and multi-target mechanisms: A review.

Increased utilization of radiation-based technologies elevates human exposure to ionizing radiation (IR), posing significant biological risks. Plant polysaccharides, naturally occurring macromolecules characterized by excellent biocompatibility, favorable safety profiles, and diverse biological activities, show promise as radioprotective agents. Evidence indicates that specific plant polysaccharides exert multi-target protective effects against IR. This review synthesizes research progress (2014-present) on the radioprotective efficacy of plant polysaccharides in critical radiosensitive system

A Prospective Study of a Custom-Made Eco-Friendly Thyroid Shield: A Breakthrough in Radiation Protection.

Background The thyroid gland is the most susceptible organ to radiation during the exposure of teeth because the thyroid area appears to be within the primary beam, and the dose levels are relatively high even after using collimation. This study aims to develop an eco-friendly thyroid shield by reusing lead foils from intra-oral periapical radiographic films and evaluate its effectiveness in intraoral radiography. Methods A total of 16 patients undergoing endodontic procedures who gave written consent to participate in the study were included and divided into four categories: anterior, canine,

Enhancing UV radiation protection of Bacillus thuringiensis formulations using sulfur quantum dots: synthesis and efficacy evaluation.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a widely used microbial insecticide, but its effectiveness is limited due to the degradation of Bt spores and crystals under UV radiation from sunlight. The objective of this study was to develop a novel Bt formulation with improved UV protection by utilizing sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) as stabilizing agents in a Pickering emulsion. The SQDs were comprehensively characterized using FTIR, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, UV, and fluorescence analyses, which confirmed the formation of well-dispersed, spherical SQDs. The microcapsule formulation with SQDs demonstrated superior UV st

Intestinal Radiation Protection and Mitigation by Second-Generation Probiotic Lactobacillus-reuteri Engineered to Deliver Interleukin-22.

(1) Background: The systemic administration of therapeutic agents to the intestine including cytokines, such as Interleukin-22 (IL-22), is compromised by damage to the microvasculature 24 hrs after total body irradiation (TBI). At that time, there is significant death of intestinal microvascular endothelial cells and destruction of the lamina propria, which limits drug delivery through the circulation, thus reducing the capacity of therapeutics to stabilize the numbers of Lgr5+ intestinal crypt stem cells and their progeny, and improve survival. By its direct action on intestinal stem cells an

Protection of the Eye from Ultraviolet Radiation Damage Among Adults in Addis Zemen Town, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation is electromagnetic radiation or light having a wavelength of less than 400 nm but greater than 100 nm. Ultraviolet radiation, majorly from sunlight, can potentially damage any organ that is exposed to any part of its spectrum. Aside from the skin, the organ most susceptible to sunlight-induced damage is the eye. Ultraviolet radiation is reported to be the cause of multiple ocular problems ranging from benign conditions like pterygium and pinguecula to ocular malignancies such as basal cell carcinoma which finally leads to visual impairment and blindness. Effects of shade location and protection from direct solar radiation on the behavior of Holstein cows.

Two trials (E1 and E2) were performed to assess the behavior of eight Holstein dairy cows with 367 ± 58 kg of body weight and 10.52 ± 0.08 kg of milk yield. A 4 × 4 Latin square design (four periods of lactation and four levels of solar blockage) with four paddocks was used. Each paddock contained a wood shading structure covered with a cloth that blocked 30% (T1), 50% (T2), 70% (T3), or 100% (T4) of direct solar radiation. In the first trial (E1) each shade structure was located approximately 40 m from the feeder and water troughs; in the second trial (E2), the distance was reduced to 5 m. Ai

A randomized controlled trial of green tea catechins in protection against ultraviolet radiation-induced cutaneous inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Safe systemic protection from the health hazards of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in sunlight is desirable. Green tea is consumed globally and is reported to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be mediated through the impact on cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. Recent data suggest that green tea catechins (GTCs) reduce acute UVR effects, but human trials examining their photoprotective potential are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We performed a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to examine whether GTCs protect against clinical, histologic, and biochemical indica

U.S. radiation protection: role of national and international recommendations and opportunities for collaboration (harmony, not dissonance).

For much of the 20th century, U.S. radiation protection policies were similar to those elsewhere in the world, in large part because the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) were closely aligned. In the 1970s, several U.S. regulations were released at about the same time as the 1977 recommendations from ICRP. The regulatory development process in the United States can be lengthy with ample opportunities for public involvement. While such deliberation is essential and beneficial, the rulemaking proces
