Quantitative computed tomography.

Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) was introduced in the mid 1970s. The technique is most commonly applied to 2D slices in the lumbar spine to measure trabecular bone mineral density (BMD; mg/cm(3)). Although not as widely utilized as dual-energy X-ray absortiometry (DXA) QCT has some advantages when studying the skeleton (separate measures of cortical and trabecular BMD; measurement of volumetric, as opposed to 'areal' DXA-BMDa, so not size dependent; geometric and structural parameters obtained which contribute to bone strength). A limitation is that the World Health Organisation (WHO) d

Maximum intensity projection of cranial computed tomography data for dental identification.

Dental radiographs play the major role in the identification of victims in mass casualties besides DNA. Under circumstances such as those caused by the recent tsunami in Asia, it is nearly impossible to document the entire dentition using conventional x-rays as it would be too time consuming. Multislice computed tomography can be used to scan the dentition of a deceased within minutes, and the postprocessing software allows visualization of the data adapted to every possible antemortem x-ray for identification. We introduce the maximum intensity projection of cranial computed tomography data f

Three-dimensional imaging of a juvenile Tillaux fracture.

The juvenile Tillaux fracture is an injury involving the articular surface of the ankle joint. The fracture sometimes requires open reduction and internal fixation. The decision to adopt an operative or nonoperative policy in each case can only be made with precise imaging of the anatomy which can be provided by three-dimensional reformation of computed tomography (CT) scanning.

Demons deformable registration for CBCT-guided procedures in the head and neck: convergence and accuracy.

PURPOSE: The accuracy and convergence behavior of a variant of the Demons deformable registration algorithm were investigated for use in cone-beam CT (CBCT)-guided procedures of the head and neck. Online use of deformable registration for guidance of therapeutic procedures such as image-guided surgery or radiation therapy places trade-offs on accuracy and computational expense. This work describes a convergence criterion for Demons registration developed to balance these demands; the accuracy of a multiscale Demons implementation using this convergence criterion is quantified in CBCT images of

Detection of masses in mammograms via statistically based enhancement, multilevel-thresholding segmentation, and region selection.

A method for automatic detection of mammographic masses is presented. As part of this method, an enhancement algorithm that improves image contrast based on local statistical measures of the mammograms is proposed. After enhancement, regions are segmented via thresholding at multiple levels, and a set of features is computed from each of the segmented regions. A region-ranking system is also presented that identifies the regions most likely to represent abnormalities based on the features computed. The method was tested on 57 mammographic images of masses from the Mini-MIAS database, and achie

Optimal graph based segmentation using flow lines with application to airway wall segmentation.

This paper introduces a novel optimal graph construction method that is applicable to multi-dimensional, multi-surface segmentation problems. Such problems are often solved by refining an initial coarse surface within the space given by graph columns. Conventional columns are not well suited for surfaces with high curvature or complex shapes but the proposed columns, based on properly generated flow lines, which are non-intersecting, guarantee solutions that do not self-intersect and are better able to handle such surfaces. The method is applied to segment human airway walls in computed tomogr

Image filtering as an alternative to the application of a different reconstruction kernel in CT imaging: feasibility study in lung cancer screening.

PURPOSE: While the acquisition of projection data in a computed tomography (CT) scanner is generally cqrried out once, the projection data is often removed from the system, making further reconstruction with a different reconstruction filter impossible. The reconstruction kernel is one of the most important parameters. To have access to all the reconstructions, either prior reconstructions with multiple kernels must be performed or the projection data must be stored. Each of these requirements would increase the burden on data archiving. This study aimed to design an effective method to achiev

Practical tips and tricks in cardiovascular computed tomography: non-contrast "heartscans"--beyond the calcium score.

The Agatston total coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, derived from a non-contrast CT scan of the heart (also known as the "heartscan") in asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, has been shown to provide incremental and independent assessment to conventional risk factors based upon literally hundreds of studies published from around the world. However, recent data have emerged to indicate that there is additional information which can be derived from a "heartscan" beyond the calcium score. These include recent data on the applicability across ethnic sub-groups, prognostication in the elderly,

Verification of the impact of differences between objective and subjective evaluation methods on the interpretation of artificial intelligence systems generating mammogram reports using vision-language model.

PURPOSE: Research on vision-language models (VLMs) in the medical field has recently increased. However, while multifaceted evaluation is necessary to avoid the high risks associated with misdiagnosis, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted mammogram report generation remains insufficient, with no studies on objective and subjective generation. We aimed to develop an AI system that generates mammogram reports and to verify the impact of differences between objective and subjective evaluation methods on the interpretation of this AI system. Learning Consistent Semantic Representation for Chest X-ray via Anatomical Localization in Self-Supervised Pre-Training.

Despite the similar global structures in Chest X-ray (CXR) images, the same anatomy exhibits varying appearances across images, including differences in local textures, shapes, colors, etc. Learning consistent representations for anatomical semantics through these diverse appearances poses a great challenge for self-supervised pre-training in CXR images. To address this challenge, we propose two new pre-training tasks: inner-image anatomy localization (IIAL) and cross-image anatomy localization (CIAL). Leveraging the relatively stable positions of identical anatomy across images, we utilize po

Intrinsic motivation-based exploration for enhancing tuberculosis lesion discovery in sparse annotation chest X-ray datasets.

The detection of tuberculosis lesions in chest X-rays is increasingly critical but remains hindered by sparse annotations and significant class imbalance within medical imaging datasets. This study addresses these limitations by proposing an intrinsic motivation-based exploration framework, leveraging curiosity-driven algorithms to encourage artificial intelligence models to autonomously seek and interpret novel radiological cues of tuberculosis. By introducing learned novelty bonuses as intrinsic rewards, the approach enables deep models to discover rare or unannotated lesion states that woul

CDT-CAD: Context-Aware Deformable Transformers for End-to-End Chest Abnormality Detection on X-Ray Images.

Deep learning methods have achieved great success in medical image analysis domain. However, most of them suffer from slow convergency and high computing cost, which prevents their further widely usage in practical scenarios. Moreover, it has been proved that exploring and embedding context knowledge in deep network can significantly improve accuracy. To emphasize these tips, we present CDT-CAD, i.e., context-aware deformable transformers for end-to-end chest abnormality detection on X-Ray images. CDT-CAD first constructs an iterative context-aware feature extractor, which not only enlarges re

Towards Automated Semantic Segmentation in Mammography Images for Enhanced Clinical Applications.

Mammography images are widely used to detect non-palpable breast lesions or nodules, aiding in cancer prevention and enabling timely intervention when necessary. To support medical analysis, computer-aided detection systems can automate the segmentation of landmark structures, which is helpful in locating abnormalities and evaluating image acquisition adequacy. This paper presents a deep learning-based framework for segmenting the nipple, the pectoral muscle, the fibroglandular tissue, and the fatty tissue in standard-view mammography images. To the best of our knowledge, we introduce the larg

A brief history of free-response receiver operating characteristic paradigm data analysis.

In the receiver operating characteristic paradigm the observer assigns a single rating to each image and the location of the perceived abnormality, if any, is ignored. In the free-response receiver operating characteristic paradigm the observer is free to mark and rate as many suspicious regions as are considered clinically reportable. Credit for a correct localization is given only if a mark is sufficiently close to an actual lesion; otherwise, the observer's mark is scored as a location-level false positive. Until fairly recently there existed no accepted method for analyzing the resulting r

Detecting and classifying linear structures in mammograms using random forests.

Detecting and classifying curvilinear structure is important in many image interpretation tasks. We focus on the challenging problem of detecting such structure in mammograms and deciding whether it is normal or abnormal. We adopt a discriminative learning approach based on a Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet representation and random forest classification. We present results of a quantitative comparison of our approach with three leading methods from the literature and with learning-based variants of those methods. We show that our new approach gives significantly better results than any of the other
