Palliative intensity modulated radiotherapy of bone metastases based on diagnostic instead of planning computed tomography scans.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy (RT) treatment planning is as a standard based on a computed tomography (CT) scan obtained at the planning stage (pCT), while most of the decisions whether to treat by RT are based on diagnostic CT scans (dCT). Bone metastases (BM) are the most common palliative RT target. The objective of this study was to investigate if a palliative RT treatment plan of BMs could be made based on a dCT with sufficient accuracy and safety, without sacrificing any treatment quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study with 60 BMs of 8 anatomical sites was performe

Prognostic value of parotid lymph node metastasis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma receiving intensity-modulated radiotherapy.

The prognostic value and staging category of parotid lymph node (PLN) metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain unknown. We retrospectively reviewed MRI scans and medical records for 1811 NPC patients who received intensity-modulated radiotherapy. The diagnosis of PLN metastasis was mainly based on MRI follow-up. Twenty-five positive PLNs in 21/1811 patients were identified; the incidence of PLN metastasis was 1.2%. PLN metastasis was significantly associated with advanced N-category and stage. Ten of the 21 patients received irradiation of the involved PLNs; the PLN recurrence rate

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy for limited-stage small-cell lung cancer.

PURPOSE: Omitting elective nodal irradiation from planning target volumes does not compromise outcomes in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer, but whether the same is true for those with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) is unknown. Therefore, in the present study, we sought to determine the clinical outcomes and the frequency of elective nodal failure in patients with LS-SCLC staged using positron emission tomography/computed tomography and treated with involved-field intensity-modulated radiotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 2005 and 2008, 60 patients with LS-SCLC at

Dosimetric comparison of intensity-modulated stereotactic radiotherapy with other stereotactic techniques for locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients can be salvaged by reirradiation with a substantial degree of radiation-related complications. Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is widely used in this regard because of its rapid dose falloff and high geometric precision. The aim of this study was to examine whether the newly developed intensity-modulated stereotactic radiotherapy (IMSRT) has any dosimetric advantages over three other stereotactic techniques, including circular arc (CARC), static conformal beam (SmMLC), and dynamic conformal arc (mARC), in treating locally recur

A comparison between cobalt and linear accelerator-based treatment plans for conformal and intensity-modulated radiotherapy.

The simplicity of cobalt units gives them the advantage of reduced maintenance, running costs and downtime when compared with linear accelerators. However, treatments carried out on such units are typically limited to simple techniques. This study has explored the use of cobalt beams for conformal and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). Six patients, covering a range of treatment sites, were planned using both X-ray photons (6/10 MV) and cobalt-60 gamma rays (1.17 and 1.33 MeV). A range of conformal and IMRT techniques were considered, as appropriate. Conformal plans created using cobalt

[Inversely planned intensity modulated radiotherapy for irradiation of a woman with breast cancer and funnel chest].

BACKGROUND: A 44-year old woman with breast cancer was transferred to our institution for irradiation. Due to a pronounced funnel chest no satisfying dose distribution was obtained by conventional techniques. Thus an intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) based on inverse optimisation was carried out. IMRT was compared to conventional techniques regarding dose distribution and feasibility. PATIENT AND METHODS: Tumor site was in the right middle lower quadrant. Target volume included the right breast and the parasternal lymph nodes. Target dose was 50.4 Gy. Based on inverse optimisation irrad
