Incongruity of the distal radioulnar joint represents a major problem following malunited fractures of the distal radius. A useful solution is the arthrodesis of the distal radioulnar joint with distal ulnar pseudarthrosis as described by Kapandji-Sauvé. The results of this procedure are presented and the indication compared to alternative treatment options discussed. Between 1991 and 1997, 19 patients were treated with a Kapandji-Sauvé procedure, for rheumatoid arthritis in seven and for a malunited fracture of the distal radius in twelve patients. All of the patients with a malunion of the d

Fractures of the proximal radius in children may lead to deformities of the radial head and functional disturbance of pro- and supination. However, traumatization is not only caused by the injury itself, but may also occur secondary to surgical reduction, manipulation of fracture fragments and excessive physiotherapy. In a prospective long-term follow-study (2-20 years after trauma) of 38 children with displaced proximal radius fractures we found functional disturbances in 11% of children only. These were not caused by radial head deformities, which were present on 83% of follow-up radiographs

Residual articular incongruity of the distal radius following intraarticular fracture has been correlated with early osteoarthritis (OA) and a poor clinical outcome. We developed a simple in vitro fracture model of the distal radius to investigate the relationship between degree of articular incongruity and the resulting distribution of radiocarpal contact stress. Twelve fresh-frozen cadaver arms were dissected, packets of Fuji Pressensor film were inserted into the wrist, and the wrist was loaded through its flexor and extensor tendons. We created a simple intraarticular fracture that allowed

Fractures of the distal radius continue to be one of the most common skeletal injuries treated by orthopedic or trauma surgeons. These injuries account for one sixth of all fractures seen and treated in emergency rooms. The rapid expansion of knowledge regarding the functional anatomy of the hand and wrist, the recognition by treating physicians of the ever increasing functional demands of senior citizens, and improved methodologies of achieving and maintaining anatomic restoration of these fractures have generated a renewed interest in addressing these fractures in a more precise manner.

In patients with distal radius fractures, routine roentgenographic examination in at least two or three planes should be performed first and is usually sufficient for correct diagnosis and adequate treatment. A careful examination of the soft tissues of the forearm and wrist on conventional roentgenograms may be key for correct diagnoses. Routine roentgenographic examination of the wrist, preferable in four views, should be performed in every patient with a distal radius fracture acutely as well as at follow-up. The technique is easy to perform, universally available, and inexpensive. Advanced

In 20 patients with COLLES' fractures, stress-films of the wrist demonstrated that without fracture of the ulnar styloid ruptures of the ulnar ligaments are possible, and lead to increased radial abduction of the carpus. This instability together with interposition of the ruptured soft tissue produces a tendency to radial subluxation of the hand, in spite of good alignment of the fragments. In conclusion, we suggest that in younger patients closed reduction should be stabilized by means of percutaneous Kirschner-wires and that the interposed soft tissue should be excised.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are among the most prevalent in upper-extremity injuries, particularly in older adults and individuals with osteoporosis. The common treatment options include surgical interventions such as volar locking plate (VLP) fixation and percutaneous pinning, as well as conservative strategies like splinting and bracing. However, the comparative effectiveness of these modalities remains unclear. This study aims to compare the functional outcomes and complication rates associated with VLP, percutaneous pinning, bracing, and splinting in the treatment of DRFs.

Distal radius fractures are common injuries that every orthopedic surgeon must be able to treat effectively. Achieving good outcomes without surgery is complex: it requires proper maneuvers in the emergency department, follow-up visits with cast adjustments or replacements, and follow-up radiographs, often resulting in discomfort for the patient. Additionally, some specialists, especially younger ones, are drawn to the perceived ease and convenience of surgical procedures, which contributes to less familiarity with conservative treatment. This update provides a practical guide to the non-opera

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) represent up to 18% of all fractures in the elderly population, yet studies on the rate of complications following surgery are lacking in the literature. This systematic review aimed to quantify the rate of complications and reinterventions in patients treated with volar plate for distal radius fractures, and analyze if there was any predisposing factor.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed on three databases up to January 2023, following PRISMA guidelines. Studies describing volar plate complications and hardware removal were includ

Distal radius fractures are the third most common type of fracture in Germany after fractures of the femoral neck and peritrochanteric femoral fractures. In 2019 a total of 72,087 cases were registered with an incidence of 106 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (81,570 fractures of the femoral neck, 73,785 peritrochanteric fractures). Many of these fractures are surgically treated also in this hospital but with controversial views on the optimal treatment. Against the background of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, disappearing personnel resources and the political pressure to form

INTRODUCTION: Rupture of the extensor tendons secondary to fractures involving the distal radius is a well-recognized rare complication. In patients with implants particularly, there exists a tendency for attributing the implant as a cause for the tendon rupture. We retrospectively studied the patients with extensor tendon injuries related to distal radius fractures, analyzed the factors leading to the rupture, suggest few preventive measures and describe the management strategy of these ruptures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 21 patients who were treated for extensor tendon rupture following distal

Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures treated by orthopedic surgeons. Various classification systems have been described which can help in deciding the approach for fixation. In some cases, a computed tomography scan can provide better understanding of the fracture fragments and displacement for surgical planning. Plating through the volar approach is the most common approach for fractures meeting operative criteria. Several additional approaches can be used for specific fracture patterns. These approaches can be used in isolation or in conjunction with other approaches t

BACKGROUND: Distal radius buckle fractures (DRBFx) represent nearly half of the pediatric wrist injuries. DRBFx are stable injury patterns that can typically be successfully managed with brief immobilization. The purpose of this study was to evaluate opinions and preferences of pediatric orthopaedic specialists regarding the management of DRBFx.
METHODS: The POSNA Trauma Quality, Safety, and Value Initiative (QSVI) Committee developed a 20-question survey regarding the treatment of DRBFx in children. The survey was sent twice to all active and candidate POSNA members in June 2020 (n=1487). Qu

Limitation of wrist range of motion (ROM) is a common complication of distal radius fractures (DRFs) in geriatric patients. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitation in the restoration of wrist ROM after geriatric DRF. Eighty-eight geriatric patients with DRF, 59 women and 29 men aged 71.69 ± 6.232 years participated in the study. The time from wrist immobilization to rehabilitation was 12.89 ± 5.318 weeks. Daily rehabilitation was performed 30 minutes a day for 8 weeks. Active wrist ROM was measured before and at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after rehabilitation. Data were

The management of distal radius fractures needs to be adapted to the increasingly complex traumas in patients with greater functional requirements. The goal remains to restore normal anatomy in order to preserve function. A pre-operative assessment using x-rays and thin-slice CT scans with three-dimensional reconstructions enables the best possible understanding of the fracture prior to surgery and planning of the pre-operative strategy. Arthroscopy is a technique that allows visualisation of the bone fragments and their displacement, as well as their reduction. It is the only tool that allows

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of obesity has increased significantly worldwide. Our hypothesis was that patients with obesity have a more severe distal radius fracture and we realized a study to evaluate this correlation between obesity and severity of distal radius fractures caused by low-energy injuries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 114 patients with distal radius fracture were examined in a cross-sectional, observational study. Fractures were classified according to the international AO-Müller/Orthopedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification in order to determine the severity. The

This article discusses recent reports on distal radius fractures. The keyword "distal radius fracture" was used to query the PubMed database of the US National Library of Medicine. From the resulting list, articles published in the Journal of Hand Surgery (American Volume), the Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume), and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma from April 2014 through December 2015 were reviewed. Related commentaries were also evaluated. Case series of fewer than 5 patients were excluded. The 65 studies and commentaries identified are categorized and summarized. [Orthopedics. 2017

The objective of this study was to investigate national surgical trends for distal radius fractures (DRFs) in Korea and analyze healthcare institution type-specific surgical trends. We analyzed a nationwide database acquired from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) from 2011 to 2015. International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) codes and procedure codes were used to identify patients aged ≥ 20 years with newly diagnosed DRFs. A total of 459,388 DRFs occurred from 2011 to 2015. The proportion of DRF cases treated by surgery tended to increase ove
