Varried conditions such as ranula, epidermal/dermal inclusion cyst, lymphatic cyst, thyroglossal cyst, sialolithiasis, branchial cleft cyst are known to produce swelling in the floor of mouth. Rarely imperforate or duplication anomaly of submandiblar duct may produce cystic lesion in the floor of mouth. We present a case of congenital imperforate submandibular duct with cyst formation in a newborn. We also review the literature regarding management.

Oral foregut duplication cysts are extremely rare lesions with approximately 57 cases reported. They are congenital cysts, located in the anterior or ventral tongue, and occur predominantly in males. They are lined by one or more types of epithelia which is limited to gastric, intestinal or respiratory epithelium. The differential diagnosis includes lymphangioma, hemangioma, ranula, epidermoid cyst, teratoma and less likely a malignant process.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric cystic sublingual masses often present a diagnostic dilemma for practitioners. Though uncommon, dermoid or epidermoid cysts can present in the sublingual space at any age and are often misdiagnosed as an inflammatory pseudocyst (ranula) or lymphatic malformation. Imaging may not always identify the underlying etiology, requiring physicians to maintain a high index of suspicion for these relatively rare oral cysts.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the presentation and treatment of sublingual dermoid and epidermoid cysts presenting to a tertiary children's hospital over 20 years.

Two patients, one with a persistent salivary fistula after surgery for a skin tumor overlying the parotid region, and the other with a ranula recurrent after surgery, were treated with low-dose irradiation. Both problems resolved after a total dose of less than 30 Gy, and neither patient experienced xerostomia. In selected patients, low-dose radiation therapy offers a solution to persistent salivary flow refractory to surgical management.

A case of cutaneous salivary fistula and sialocele in the submental area, arising from the sublingual gland, is reported and its etiology, development, and management are discussed. The entity of plunging ranula is compared to the lesion the case presented, and the literature regarding this lesion is reviewed. The successful surgical treatment of this case supports the theory that the sublingual gland is the source of the disorder. The effect of the altered salivary function on the adjacent submandibular gland and duct presented an operative complication.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) in oral and maxillofacial lesions, especially the utility of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps for differential diagnosis of these lesions.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial lesions were included in this prospective study. DWI was performed on a 1.5 T unit with b-factors of 0 and 800 s/mm2, and ADC maps were generated. ADC values were measured for all 57 oral and maxillofacial lesions (19

Mucoceles are common cystic lesions of the oral mucosa. Extravasation mucoceles are mainly found in the lower lip of young patients, whereas retention mucoceles are usually located in the cheek or palate of older patients. The disparate site and age incidences of extravasation and retention mucoceles suggest that these two types are not related and have different pathogenesis. Treatment modalities for mucoceles are reviewed, with special attention to the cryosurgical technique for the treatment of oral ranulas.

Tumors of the tongue and the base of mouth are seen rarely in children. The incidence of the ones that are large enough to fill the oral cavity is especially low. If not recognized and treated, tongue tumors may obstruct the upper aero-digestive tract and be fatal. A case of a huge lingual cystic tumor mimicking ranula, and obstructing the upper aero-digestive tract, which was diagnosed antenatal and treated during and after the delivery, is presented together with a review of the literature.

The experience of the surgical treatment of drooling in the 12-year period 1985-1997 has been retrospectively reviewed. Details of 71 out of a total of 79 patients were available. Of these, 69% underwent bilateral submandibular duct diversion and unilateral parotid duct ligation. Excellent or good control of drooling was obtained in 65 patients (92%) which compares favourably with other series. A ranula occurred in 10% and settled spontaneously. Transient airway obstruction occurred in one patient.

Epidermoid cysts are rare, slow-growing, benign, developmental cysts that are derived from abnormally situated ectodermal tissue. Epidermoid cysts may grow anywhere on the body and about 7% of them are located in the head and neck region. They are usually asymptomatic over years but can be symptomatic due to secondary changes or the growing size. Clinically, the lesion presents as a slow-growing asymptomatic mass, usually located in the midline, above or below the mylohyoid muscle. Surgical excision from the floor of the mouth is indicated to relieve symptoms and prevent possible infection. Th

Thyroglossal duct anomalies and dermoid cysts comprise the vast majority of congenital midline cervical masses seen in children. Unusual lesions of the midline neck include ranulae and midline cervical clefts. Workup and management is lesion-dependent, and an accurate preoperative diagnosis is essential for planning and performing an appropriate surgical procedure. This discussion presents an overview of the relevant embryology, pathophysiology, and diagnostic modalities for these congenital midline cervical anomalies. Additionally, the current principles of surgical management are described.

A mucocoele or extravasation of mucus is common in minor salivary glands, but unusual in major ones. Those from the submandibular gland are a diagnostic challenge and conventional management includes excision of the associated gland. We describe a 27-year-old man with a mucocoele of the submandibular gland that presented as a lateral cervical swelling and looked like a plunging ranula. The cystic lesion was completely excised and, to our knowledge, this is the first published case in which the submandibular gland was saved with no recurrence up to two years postoperatively.

Management of drooling in the neurologically disabled individual has been accomplished with a team approach using surgical and nonsurgical methodology. Submandibular duct relocation has been the primary surgical procedure of choice in 194 patients during the past 10 years. Drooling has been reduced significantly in the majority of patients. Ranulas requiring intraoral sublingual gland excision occurred in 8% of patients. Persistent submandibular duct obstruction necessitating external excision of the submandibular gland occurred in 1% of the ducts relocated.

OBJECTIVE: Many surgical techniques have been described to manage floor of mouth masses, but few studies have described the approach to these masses in children. This case series summarizes a single institution's experience with pediatric floor of mouth masses.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all children who presented at our tertiary care facility with FOM masses between 2007 and 2012. Charts were reviewed for clinical presentation, preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management.
RESULTS: Thirteen cases were retrieved: 6 dermoid cysts, 4 ranulas, 1 lymphatic

Mycetoma and various invasive forms of the disease are caused by etiological agents like Nocardia, Actinomycetes, and Streptomyces spp. Streptomyces spp. is notable for its production of antibiotics. However, it is also most commonly associated with actinomycetoma, especially Streptomyces somaliensis (S. somaliensis), Streptomyces griseus. (S. griseus), S. sudanensis, and S. viridis. We present a series of cases with varied clinical presentations ranging from cutaneous nodules to plunging ranula in which Streptomyces spp have been isolated in culture with further species-level identification u
