Identification of allergens in oilseed rape (Brassica napus) pollen.

BACKGROUND: Pollen from oilseed rape (OSR), Brassica napus, an increasingly cultivated oilplant from the Brassicaceae, has been recognized as a potential cause of allergic sensitization. Allergens have been hardly investigated. METHODS: We characterized IgE binding proteins in OSR pollen by immunoblot, immunoblot inhibition and specific monoclonal antibodies using sera from 89 patients sensitized to OSR. RESULTS: Two low-molecular-weight allergens of 6/8 kD and 14 kD as well as a high molecular-weight cluster (27-69 kD) comprising six cross-reactive peptides could be identified. The three al

Effects of Canola Oil Consumption on Lipid Profile: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials.

Hyperlipidemia is a well- known risk factor of cardiovascular disease. A healthy diet containing vegetable oils such as canola oil (CO) may help to reduce serum lipids. This study aimed to quantify the effects of CO on lipid parameters using a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, and Embase were systematically searched until December 2017, with no time and design restrictions. Also, a manual search was performed to find extra relevant articles. Lipid parameters including total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein ch

Dietary supplementation of L-arginine and conjugated linoleic acid reduces retroperitoneal fat mass and increases lean body mass in rats.

We hypothesized that l-arginine and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) would have additive effects in decreasing adiposity. Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to the following dietary groups (n = 6/group; 5 wk total): 1) control (2.55% l-alanine plus 1.5% canola oil); 2) arginine (1.25% l-arginine plus 1.5% canola oil); 3) CLA (2.55% l-alanine plus 1.5% CLA); and 4) arginine plus CLA (1.25% l-arginine plus 1.5% CLA). Supplemental amino acids were provided in drinking water and CLA was incorporated into the food pellets. Daily weight gain, food intake, arginine intake, and final body and eviscerated

Canolol Alleviates Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulcer by Inhibiting p38 MAPK/NF-κB/NLRP3 Pathway.

Gastric ulcer (GU) is among the most prevalent digestive disorders globally. This study investigates the protective effects of canolol, a natural phenolic compound derived from crude rapeseed oil, on ethanol-induced GU in rats. Our results demonstrated that canolol pretreatment notably reduced gastric mucosal damage, as evidenced by lower ulcer indices and improved histopathological scores. Ethanol exposure severely disrupted the gastric mucosal defense systems, characterized by reduced gastric wall mucus secretion, lower NP-SH levels, suppressed heat shock protein 70 expression, and decreased

Fingolimod attenuates experimental autoimmune neuritis and contributes to Schwann cell-mediated axonal protection.

BACKGROUND: Fingolimod, a sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor modulator with well-described immunomodulatory properties involving peripheral immune cell trafficking, was the first oral agent approved for the treatment of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. Analogous immunomodulatory treatment options for chronic peripheral autoimmune neuropathies are lacking. METHODS: We tested fingolimod in the animal model of experimental autoimmune neuritis in Lewis rat. Six to eight-week-old female rats were immunized with P2 peptide and from this day on treated with fingolimod. Histology of the sciatic

Pharmaceutical quality of herbal medicinal products and dietary supplements - a case study with oral solid formulations containing Lavandula species.

The effectiveness and safety of regulated herbal medicinal products and dietary/food supplements are key areas of research. However, limited evidence exists of their pharmaceutical performance quality (including the standard in the respective pharmacopeial monographs). We evaluated the applicability of the European Pharmacopoeia general chapter protocols for disintegration testing of oral dosage forms using 73 products containing Lavandula species. Several Lavandula species, hybrids and cultivars are important medicinal plants globally in the phytopharmaceuticals and dietary/food supplement in

Coronary heart disease: dietary links and pathogenesis.

For decades it has been postulated that the main environmental factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) was the intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA). Nevertheless, confirmation of the role of SFA in CHD through intervention trials has been disappointing. It was only when the diet was enriched in n-3 fatty acids that CHD was significantly prevented, especially cardiac death. In addition to n-3 fatty acids, many other foodstuffs or nutrients such as fibers, antioxidants, folic acid, calcium and even alcohol contribute to prevent CHD. Thus the relationship between diet and CHD morbidity and morta

Role of hepatic de novo lipogenesis in the development of fasting-induced fatty liver in the American mink (Neovison vison).

American mink (Neovison vison) develop fatty liver quickly in response to food deprivation, which results in preferential mobilisation of n-3 PUFA. The altered n-3:n-6 PUFA ratio in the liver may activate the endocannabinoid system resulting in increased lipid synthesis. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of feeding intensity (80 or 120% RDA), dietary fat source (n-3, n-6 or n-9 fatty acids (FA)) and short-term fasting (1-7 d) on hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and the development of fatty liver in mink. Significantly elevated expression of mRNA encoding for ac

Rheology and stability of acidified food emulsions treated with high pressure.

The stability and rheology of acidified model oil-in-water emulsions (pH 3.6 +/- 0.1) were evaluated before and after high-pressure treatments. Varying concentrations of canola oil (0-50% w/w), whey protein isolate, polysorbate 60, soy lecithin (0.1-1.5% w/w each), and xanthan (0.0-0.2% w/w) were chosen. Exposure to high pressures (up to 800 MPa for 5 min at 30 degrees C) did not significantly affect the equivalent surface mean diameter D[3,2], flow behavior, and viscoelasticity of the whey protein isolate and polysorbate 60-stabilized emulsions. Pressure treatments had negligible effects on e

Fatty acid composition of milk from Holstein cows fed oleamide or canola oil.

Based on previous in vitro results that showed reduced biohydrogenation of oleamide by ruminal microbes, this study was conducted to determine whether the addition of oleamide to the diets of dairy cows would enhance the C18:1 concentration in milk. Nine first lactation Holstein cows were fed three diets in a 3 x 3 Latin square replicated three times. Each period lasted 3 wk. The total mixed diets consisted of 42% corn silage and 58% concentrate (dry matter basis) with either no added fat (control), 3.5% high oleic canola oil, or 3.5% oleamide. Dry matter intake was reduced when oleamide was a

Nutrition and dietary interventions for treatment and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia in children and adolescents: A systematic review.

AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common inherited metabolic disease caused by mutations of genes involved in low-density cholesterol (LDL-C) catabolism. The accumulation of LDL-C increases the risk of early atherosclerosis and premature coronary artery disease. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the impact of dietary interventions to lower total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C in FH children not on medication. DATA SYNTHESIS: We searched three databases to March 2024 to identify randomised-controlled trials (RCTs), crossover and non-randomised observational studies

Toxic oil syndrome: survival in the whole cohort between 1981 and 1995.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In 1981, toxic oil syndrome (TOS) appeared in Spain, affecting more than 20,000 persons and causing over 2500 deaths to date. Previous studies have addressed mortality only by gender and age. We analyzed possible prognostic factors in the survival of the cohort. METHODS: The study period was 1 May 1981 to 31 December 1995 (31 December 1995 was the cut-off date for survivors). The study population consisted of the entire cohort. Overall mortality and TOS-related deaths were studied. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used in the analyses. RESULTS: Among the

Long-term effects of a food pattern on cardiovascular risk factors and age-related changes of muscular and cognitive function.

INTRODUCTION: The mean age of the German population increased over the last years, which resulted in a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, cognitive impairment, sarcopenia and bone fractures. Current evidence indicates a preservation of human wellbeing in the elderly by a healthy diet, although the recommended macronutrient composition and quality remains unclear and needs further long-term investigation. In this context we investigate the effect of a specific dietary pattern on age-related disorders in a randomized controlled multi-center trial (RCT). METHODS: We a
