[Recreational drugs and environmental contaminants in mother 's milk].

In Germany and many other countries breast milk contamination in particular with persistent organochlorines and lead declined substantially by 50-70% or more during the last decade. Generally also mercury compounds, cadmium and other environmental contaminants do not pose a toxic threat to the fully breast fed infant, which, according to the current knowledge, could outweigh the advantages of breast-feeding. Industrial regions, large cities and frequent consumption of contaminated fish are factors still positively correlated with elevated breast milk contamination. However, recent study result

Prevention of carbon monoxide exposure in general and recreational aviation.

Carbon monoxide exposure is an important public health issue that poses a significant, albeit uncommon risk in aviation. Exposure is most common in single engine piston-driven aircraft where air is passed over the exhaust manifold to serve as cabin heat. Effective primary prevention of this exposure is the regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft exhaust systems, as required by law. For situations at special risk should exposure occur, and where there is concern for the public safety, installation of active warning devices for CO intrusion into cockpits may improve secondary prevention.

Recreational use of "ecstasy" (MDMA) is associated with elevated impulsivity.

Recent preclinical evidence suggests that repeated exposure to 3, 4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA; "ecstasy") produces long-term reductions in serotonin (5-HT) levels. 5-HT has been implicated in the regulation of mood, anxiety, aggression, impulsivity, and cognition. Accordingly, in the first of two separate studies, these variables were investigated in three groups: (1) MDMA group--recreational ecstasy users (who also used other illicit substances); (2) polydrug controls--who had never taken ecstasy, but otherwise had drug histories and personal characteristics similar to the ecstasy

Comparison of glenohumeral joint laxity in elite and recreational swimmers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether glenohumeral joint (GHJ) hyperlaxity is related to swimming training volume, we evaluated elite and recreational swimmers for differences in GHJ laxity and general joint hypermobility (GJH). PARTICIPANTS: Thirty male and female elite swimmers, aged 15-25 years, were compared with 30 recreational swimmers on five clinical GHJ laxity tests. GJH was assessed based on evaluation of hypermobility in four other joints or joint combinations. OUTCOME MEASURES: Group differences in both GHJ laxity and GJH were analyzed using chi 2 analysis. RESULTS: Compared with th

Recreational weight lifting and aortic dissection: case report.

Although there have been previous cases of ascending (type I) aortic dissection recognized in young weight lifters, this is the first reported instance of a descending (type III) dissection in such an individual. Successful treatment included aortic fenestration and an aortoiliac bypass. A new entity of aortic dissection in young weight lifters may be emerging.

A survey of running injuries in 1505 competitive and recreational runners.

A 33 item multiple choice questionnaire was circulated; completed questionnaires from 1505 runners (1130 male and 375 female) were obtained. Questions focused upon training, injuries sustained, and medical care. Biomechanical imbalances such as leg length inequality appear to be a major contributing factor to running injuries. Correction of an underlying biomechanical defect may be important in the treatment of many running injuries. Female runners were found to be more susceptible than males to stress fractures at higher mileages. The cause of this increased incidence may be attributable to l

Accidental firearm fatalities and injuries among recreational hunters.

Injuries and fatalities from recreational hunting accidents have been studied much less than firearm accidents occurring in urban populations. The available data indicate that hunting accidents may account for a significant number of unintentional firearm accidents in areas outside commonly studied urban settings. Legislative efforts to control handgun availability can be expected to have little impact on hunting accident statistics. The development of automatic firearm safety devices, promotion of hunter safety programs, and greater participation by the medical community in preventive measure

Sleep and Breathing in Recreational Climbers at an Altitude of 4200 and 6400 Meters: Observational Study of Sleep and Patterning of Respiration During Sleep in a Group of Recreational Climbers.

Background: The increasing popularity of mountain climbing will result in greater numbers of the general population being at risk for the disturbances known to occur with altitude exposure. Methods: Observations of sleep and breathing were made in 6 healthy travellers (5 males and 1 female, 38 to 62 years of age) before, during, and after a recreational climb. We modified a portable seven channel polygraph to record sleep state, oxygen saturation, respiratory movements, body position, and oronasal airflow 4 weeks prior to the expedition at home (500m), at base camp (4200m) and in 3 climbers at

NfL and GFAP quantification and associations with mental health in recreational cannabis users-Results from the Swiss study on recreational cannabis access via pharmacies.

Neurofilament light chain (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are biomarkers for neuroaxonal damage and astroglial injury, respectively. The present study aimed to quantify NfL and GFAP as well as investigate their association with psychiatric symptoms in a sample of recreational cannabis users. Blood samples from 331 individuals with regular recreational cannabis use were collected. Serum NfL (sNfL) and GFAP (sGFAP) levels were quantified in duplicate by an ultrasensitive single-molecule array (Simoa) technology. Reference populations were used to calculate age-, BMI-, and (for G

Sport and recreation for Indigenous peoples with neurodevelopmental disabilities in Canada: an empty scoping review and call to action.

Sport and recreation are central to physical health, social inclusion, and community well-being. Indigenous Peoples and individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs) both experience systemic barriers to participation; however, the intersection of these identities remains underexplored. This Indigenous-led scoping review examined the current state of published and grey literature on sport and recreation for Indigenous Peoples with NDDs in Canada and considered what research, policy, and practice gaps are evident in, or suggested by, this literature. Guided by PRISMA-ScR, comprehensive

Increasing Social Connection in Permanent Supportive Housing: A Participatory Study on Therapeutic Recreation for People With Experiences of Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social exclusion and isolation due to homelessness are compounded in older people by physical frailty and stigma. Interventions to support older people with experiences of homelessness often neglect social dimensions of well-being. In this participatory action research study, residents, staff, and researchers collaborated to develop, implement, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programming in a permanent supportive housing facility for older people with experiences of homelessness (n = 68). Providing Accessible ReCreation Outdoors-User-Driven Research on Standards: Protocol for Mobile and Web-Based Interviews for Winter Assessments.

BACKGROUND: Although there have been recent efforts to improve access to Canadian national parks, many remain not fully accessible to people with disabilities. Winter conditions, in particular, present challenges that limit their participation in outdoor activities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a novel method to assess park access during winter, which will inform recommendations for national park standards to meet the needs of all park visitors (regardless of ability) during winter conditions. METHODS: A larger participatory mixed methods research project exploring park access was

Outdoor recreation, tick borne encephalitis incidence and seasonality in Finland, Norway and Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020/2021).

During the pandemic outdoor activities were encouraged to mitigate transmission risk while providing safe spaces for social interactions. Human behaviour, which may favour or disfavour, contact rates between questing ticks and humans, is a key factor impacting tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) incidence. We analyzed annual and weekly TBE cases in Finland, Norway and Sweden from 2010 to 2021 to assess trend, seasonality, and discuss changes in human tick exposure imposed by COVID-19. We compared the pre-pandemic incidence (2010-2019) with the pandemic incidence (2020-2021) by fitting a generalized

"Everything has changed": detention officer roles and recreation time changes due to COVID-19 policies at a Southwest County Jail.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic responses in jails have forced detention officers to adjust how they approach the confinement and care of individuals while they are incarcerated. One aspect of incarceration affected was detention officers' roles. The aims of this research project were to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the general duties of detention officers at a Southwest County Jail. Detention officers were recruited via email to participate in an online questionnaire from October to December 2020. Participants answered Likert scale and open-ended questions regarding how

Use of life jackets and other types of flotation for in-water recreation in designated swim areas in Washington State.

UNLABELLED: Most fatal drownings worldwide occur in open water. Flotation devices may protect swimmers. Their use by those recreating in water has not been described. METHODS: Observational survey of swimmers and waders at designated swim sites at lakes and rivers evaluated them by age group, sex, type of flotation used (life jacket vs substandard flotation, eg, water wings, noodles, inflatables) and, for children <6 years, being within arm's reach of an adult. RESULTS: Of 1967 swimmers/waders observed, 37% used some type of flotation device. Use rates, especially of life jackets, decreased
