Combined recruitment of two fixation chains during cyclic movements of one arm.

Voluntary adduction-abduction movements of one arm in the horizontal plane discharge a reaction torque which would rotate the trunk in the direction opposite to arm acceleration. Rotation is impeded by muscular fixation chains that exert forces counterbalancing the reaction torque. We examined how two different fixation chains cooperate in stabilising the trunk during the above movements. Standing subjects (n=6), with shoulders ante-flexed, performed cyclic adductions-abductions of the right arm (1.5 Hz) while grasping a fixed handle with the left hand. In this set-up, reaction torque is contr

Expression of amphetamine sensitization is associated with recruitment of a reactive neuronal population in the nucleus accumbens core.

RATIONALE: Repeated exposure to psychostimulant drugs causes a long-lasting increase in the psychomotor and reinforcing effects of these drugs and an array of neuroadaptations. One such alteration is a hypersensitivity of striatal activity such that a low dose of amphetamine in sensitized animals produces dorsal striatal activation patterns similar to acute treatment with a high dose of amphetamine. OBJECTIVES: To extend previous findings of striatal hypersensitivity with behavioral observations and with cellular activity in the nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex in sensitized animals.

Altered neural recruitment during single and dual tasks in athletes with repeat concussion.

Sports-related concussions (SRCs) pose significant challenges to college-aged athletes, eliciting both immediate symptoms and subacute cognitive and motor function impairment. While most symptoms and impairments resolve within weeks, athletes with repeat SRCs may experience heightened risk for prolonged recovery trajectories, future musculoskeletal injuries, and long-term neurocognitive deficits. This study aimed to investigate the impact of repeat SRCs on dual task performance and associated neural recruitment using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A total of 37 college-aged ath

Diagnostic Utility of Clinical Neurophysiology in Jerky Movement Disorders: A Review from the MDS Clinical Neurophysiology Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Myoclonus and other jerky movement disorders are hyperkinetic disorders, the diagnosis of which heavily relies on clinical neurophysiological testing. However, formal diagnostic criteria are lacking, and recently the utility and reliability of these tests have been questioned. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to assess the utilization of clinical neurophysiology testing to identify possible gaps and boundaries that might guide the development of new methods for a more precise diagnosis and in-depth understanding of myoclonus. METHODS: We reviewed electrophysiological feature

Vagal determinants of exercise capacity.

Indirect measures of cardiac vagal activity are strongly associated with exercise capacity, yet a causal relationship has not been established. Here we show that in rats, genetic silencing of the largest population of brainstem vagal preganglionic neurons residing in the brainstem's dorsal vagal motor nucleus dramatically impairs exercise capacity, while optogenetic recruitment of the same neuronal population enhances cardiac contractility and prolongs exercise endurance. These data provide direct experimental evidence that parasympathetic vagal drive generated by a defined CNS circuit determi

Stiff man syndrome: neurophysiological findings in eight patients.

The neurophysiological findings in eight patients with the stiff man syndrome (SMS), including four of six tested with autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase, are presented. Neurophysiological findings did not make it possible to discriminate between patients with and those without autoimmunity against GABAergic neurons. Investigation of mono- and polysynaptic reflexes revealed abnormal results in a variable number of SMS patients, the abnormalities largely corresponding to those seen in spastic paresis. A stereotyped motor response to electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves wa

Epilepsia partialis continua beyond status epilepticus: a generator-based neurophysiological framework for clinical decision-making.

Epilepsia Partialis Continua (EPC) is traditionally classified as a focal motor form of status epilepticus, yet its clinical course and therapeutic needs are remarkably heterogeneous. Current classification strategies, largely based on etiology, duration, or temporal evolution, do not adequately reflect the underlying neurophysiological organization of the epileptic system or explain the variability in systemic involvement and treatment response observed in practice. This review proposes a generator-based neurophysiological framework that reinterprets EPC according to the biological stability

Multipoint Stimulation Motor Unit Number Estimation of the Extensor Indicis and Anconeus After Spinal Cord Injury.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) significantly impairs upper limb function, affecting patients' quality of life. Nerve transfer surgery can restore arm and hand function, but its success depends on the health of infralesional lower motor neurons (LMNs). LMN abnormalities are prevalent in muscles targeted for nerve transfer, particularly those innervated by the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) and radial nerve, essential for wrist extension and hand opening. This study evaluates the health of infralesional LMNs in cervical SCI using multipoint stimulation motor unit number

Motor axonal neuropathy associated with GNE mutations.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the GNE gene have been so far described as predominantly associated with distal lower-limb myopathies. Recent reports describe mutations in this gene in patients with peripheral neuropathy and motor neuron disease. METHODS: We describe three patients displaying motor neuropathy in association with GNE mutations. Clinical, electrophysiological, imaging, pathological, and genetic data are presented in a retrospective manner. RESULTS: The three patients had different phenotypes, ranging from mildly progressive lower limb weakness to a rapidly progressive 4-limb weakness

One central oscillatory drive is compatible with experimental motor unit behaviour in essential and Parkinsonian tremor.

OBJECTIVE: Pathological tremors are symptomatic to several neurological disorders that are difficult to differentiate and the way by which central oscillatory networks entrain tremorogenic contractions is unknown. We considered the alternative hypotheses that tremor arises from one oscillator (at the tremor frequency) or, as suggested by recent findings from the superimposition of two separate inputs (at the tremor frequency and twice that frequency). APPROACH: Assuming one central oscillatory network we estimated analytically the relative amplitude of the harmonics of the tremor frequency in

Psychophysical and neurochemical abnormalities of pain processing in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia pain is frequent in the general population, but its pathogenesis is only partially understood. Patients with fibromyalgia lack consistent tissue abnormalities but display features of hyperalgesia (increased sensitivity to painful stimuli) and allodynia (lowered pain threshold). Many recent fibromyalgia studies have demonstrated central nervous system (CNS) pain processing abnormalities, including abnormal temporal summation of pain. In the CNS, persistent nociceptive input from peripheral tissues can lead to neuroplastic changes resulting in central sensitization and pain. This me

Recruitment of apical dendritic T-type Ca2+ channels by backpropagating spikes underlies de novo intrinsic bursting in hippocampal epileptogenesis.

A single episode of status epilepticus (SE) induced in rodents by the convulsant pilocarpine, produces, after a latent period of > or = 2 weeks, a chronic epileptic condition. During the latent period of epileptogenesis, most CA1 pyramidal cells that normally fire in a regular pattern, acquire low-threshold bursting behaviour, generating high-frequency clusters of 3-5 spikes as their minimal response to depolarizing stimuli. Recruitment of a Ni(2+)- and amiloride-sensitive T-type Ca(2+) current (I(CaT)), shown to be up-regulated after SE, plays a critical role in burst generation in most cases

Post-error recruitment of frontal sensory cortical projections promotes attention in mice.

The frontal cortex, especially the anterior cingulate cortex area (ACA), is essential for exerting cognitive control after errors, but the mechanisms that enable modulation of attention to improve performance after errors are poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that during a mouse visual attention task, ACA neurons projecting to the visual cortex (VIS; ACAVIS neurons) are recruited selectively by recent errors. Optogenetic manipulations of this pathway collectively support the model that rhythmic modulation of ACAVIS neurons in anticipation of visual stimuli is crucial for adjusting perform

The impact of 6 months of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation on sympathetic neural recruitment during apneic stress.

The current study evaluated the hypothesis that 6 mo of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) would improve sympathetic neural recruitment in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). Microneurography was used to evaluate action potential (AP) discharge patterns within bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), in 11 patients with IHD (1 female; 61 ± 9 yr) pre (pre-CR) and post (post-CR) 6 mo of aerobic and resistance training-based CR. Measures were made at baseline and during maximal voluntary end-inspiratory (EI-APN) and end-expiratory apneas (EE-APN). Data were analyzed dur

Effect of milk fat globule membrane supplementation on motor unit adaptation following resistance training in older adults.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) supplementation on motor unit adaptation following resistance training in older adults. Twenty-five older males and females took MFGM (n = 12) or a placebo (PLA; n = 12) while performing 8 weeks of isometric knee extension training. During the training, the motor unit firing pattern during submaximal contractions, muscle thickness, and maximal muscle strength of knee extensor muscles were measured every 2 weeks. None of the measurements showed significant differences in muscle thickness or maximal muscle strength (M
