Cutaneous Tuberculosis With Multisystem Involvement in an Immunocompetent Refugee.

Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) is an uncommon skin infection that can mimic other dermatologic conditions and delay recognition. Herein, we present a case of TB chancre, a form of CTB caused by exogenous inoculation. A 19-year-old immunocompetent male refugee from Sudan presented with a five-month history of non-healing wounds on his right shoulder and three weeks of bilateral lower extremity weakness. Diagnostic examination revealed the presence of a spinal epidural abscess and lung consolidation, with culture of the spinal abscess positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Skin biopsy of t

[Atypical mycocutaneous manifestation of Leishmania tropica in a refugee].

In this case report a male 19-year-old Syrian refugee presented with a sore throat. A biopsy from larynx detected Leishmania tropica compatible with leishmaniasis, although L. tropica does not normally cause mucosal leishmaniasis (CL). An immunodeficiency was detected, and the patient was treated for hypogammaglobulinaemia and CL three times, before the symptoms disappeared. Leishmaniasis is a disease, which should be taken into consideration, when refugees present with atypical clinical manifestations, especially in immunosuppressed patients.

[A Somali refugee with fever and abnormal blood smear].

The increasing migration into Europe may confront clinicians with diseases barely known any more in this part of the world. We present a case of louse-borne relapsing fever in a Somali refugee. Blood smears led to the diagnosis of relapsing fever and DNA sequencing was positive for Borrelia recurrentis. This disease should be considered in all patients with unclear fever and a compatible travel or migration history. Blood smears are employed as the primary diagnostic method. Therapy harbors the danger of a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, a complication that may require intensive medical care.

Prevalence of depression in Syrian refugees and the influence of religiosity.

BACKGROUND: Many surveys have underlined the high levels of distress Syrian refugees have endured since the conflict aroused in their country, yet few have used reliable diagnostic tools for the clinical assessment of resulting mental disorders. The aim of our study is to assess for the onset of new depressive disorders following the Syrian war, and to investigate the correlation of religiosity with depression. METHODS: Single individual interviews were used, in a sample of 310 Syrian forced migrants, retrospectively assessing for depressive disorders with onset at different timelines of the

Psychopathology in African unaccompanied refugee minors in Austria.

We assessed the prevalence of a range of psychopathology among African unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) in Austria. Additionally, the predictive value of war exposure on PTSD symptoms was examined. Forty-one URMs were assessed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents, the Youth Self-Report, the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index and Facts About You. As expected, 56% of youth had at least one diagnosis by structured clinical interview. The most common diagnoses were adjustment disorder, PTSD and dysthymia. War affliction marginally predicted (p = 0.065) PTSD

Outbreak of measles and rubella in refugee transit camps.

In 2004, concurrent measles and rubella outbreaks occurred in four camps hosting 2767 Liberian refugees in Côte d'Ivoire. Sixty rash and fever cases were identified. From 19 January to 23 February 2004 (weeks 8-13), measles IgM testing showed that 61.1% were positive. The highest incidence rate (18.5%) of measles was observed in children aged <9 months. Ninety-three percent of children aged between 6 months and 15 years received a measles vaccine during week 13, but the rash and fever cases continued to occur. This prompted a systematic test for both measles and rubella IgM antibodies. Rubella

Assessment of issues facing immigrant and refugee families.

This article identifies the different problems immigrants and refugees face in the United States, especially socioeconomic and psychosocial concerns that often relate to the experience of migration. Traditional familial roles and responsibilities are frequently challenged, exacerbated by sociocultural differences and inadequate understandings between the new arrivals and the host country. Essential in assessments of immigrant and refugee families is evaluating resources for social, economic, and cultural integration; discriminating between realistic and unrealistic expectations; evaluating fam

Measles in Vietnamese refugee children in Hong Kong.

From September 1991-January 1992, there was a measles epidemic in an established refugee camp for 7000 Vietnamese 'Boat People' living in Hong Kong. This 16 week outbreak occurred against a backdrop of poor uptake of measles vaccination and overcrowded living conditions. Two hundred and sixty-two children were affected (155 boys, 107 girls); 235 children (89.7 %) were < 2 years old, age range 5-39 months. Children age 6-11 months had the highest crude attack rate (AR) of 54.3%. The highest age specific crude AR was 83.8% in children aged 14 months. Measles complications affected 234 (89.3%) ch

Afghan refugee issues in the U.S. social environment.

Since Afghan refugees began coming to the United States in the early 1980s, the Afghan community of the San Francisco Bay Area has become the largest in the United States. This population copes with a number of stressors that negatively affect their health and psychological well-being. Based on an ethnographic study, we focus on the social context in which Afghan refugees find themselves, describing Afghans' perceptions of their interactions with mainstream American citizens and health and social service providers. The theme running through all such interactions is information--its scarcity, c

Leprosy. Our Southeast Asian refugee experience.

In the past two years, we have diagnosed four cases of leprosy at the St Paul-Ramsey Hospital Dermatology Clinic. This is a markedly increased incidence for the state of Minnesota. All of these cases have been found among recently arrived Southeast Asian refugees not noted to have their disease by previous screening examinations. The purpose of this study is to report these four cases (two tuberculoid, one lepromatous, and one borderline leprosy) and to review the Southeast Asian Refugee Resettlement Program, focusing on medical screening programs. We recommend refugee health education, health

Is there a need of health assessments for resettling refugees? A cross-sectional study of 1431 refugees who arrived in Denmark between 2014 and 2018.

BACKGROUND: Refugees have increased health risks due to factors related to their country of origin, the migration itself and the receiving country. Based on systematic general health assessments of newly arrived refugees, we aimed to study the characteristics with regard to background, migration and health needs. METHODS: All refugees (children/adolescents and adults) arriving in Aarhus, Denmark from 1 January 2014 to 1 November 2018 were offered a general health assessment by a doctor including: medical history, a physical examination and blood samples. RESULTS: A cohort of 1431 (of 1618 in

Enhancing Access for Immigrant and Refugee Families: A Conceptual Pathway Framework for the Integration of Social and Mental Health Services for Immigrant and Refugee Families.

While Canada has established a robust settlement program, significant limitations remain in developing coordinated, integrated, responsive, and sustainable service pathway systems. Contributing challenges include limited awareness and underutilization of pre-arrival and settlement services, as well as a predominant focus on short-term "basic" resettlement needs rather than on long-term mental health and primary service supports. Using a community-based participatory research and mixed-methods research design, we co-designed a concept-to-practice Service Pathways Model comprising four core comp

Preventability and contributing factors in neonatal deaths in protracted refugee camp settings: A five-year audit among Syrian refugees in Jordan.

BackgroundIndividual-level death audits can identify modifiable failures that routine mortality statistics miss. We analyzed 5 years of neonatal death audits from the Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps to characterize health-system delays, contributing factors, and preventability.MethodsThis individual-level analysis included 177 audited neonatal deaths from January 1, 2021, through December 31, 2025. Structured audits used caregiver interviews, maternal and neonatal records, antenatal care (ANC) cards, and provider discussions, followed by sequential independent clinical review and UNHCR validat

Exploring the impact of multidimensional refugee vulnerability on distancing as a protective measure against COVID-19: The case of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Turkey.

BACKGROUND: The unequal physiological and socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world are revealing the multidimensional components of health and vulnerability. As governments have pushed physical and social distancing as protective strategies, this study explores the extent to which this approach is relevant for Syrian refugees living in Lebanon and Turkey. METHODS: This qualitative study draws on 11 interviews with refugee experts and development practitioners (3) and Syrian refugee families (4 from Turkey, 4 from Lebanon) during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a

Social Determinants of Mental Health Outcomes Among Refugee Adolescents and Youth Living with HIV in Refugee Settlements in Uganda: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Although the prevalence of mental disorders is high among conflict-affected populations, the extent to which social determinants impact the mental health of conflict-affected youth living with HIV is not well studied. The goal of this study was to investigate how social determinants impact the mental health of refugee adolescents and youth living with HIV in Uganda (RAYLHIV). We analyzed baseline data from a two-year cluster randomized clinical trial (RCT) among RAYLHIV (ages 13-30). The participants were recruited between July and December 2023 from 20 health centers in three refugee settleme
