Discriminant analysis and logistic regression on genetic history and environmental factors in children with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is known to be related to genetic and environmental factors, we aimed to identify the predictors discriminating between children with asthma and a control group in order to build typical profiles of these children. METHODS: A multidimensional analysis covered children (58 with asthma and 217 as control group), under 17 years of age, involving environmental variables and medical history of these children and their families. RESULTS: Chi-square tests highlighted significant links between variables as rhinitis and conjunctivitis (P<0.001). The results showed, in group of asth

Flexible regression approach to propensity score analysis and its relationship with matching and weighting.

In propensity score analysis, the frequently used regression adjustment involves regressing the outcome on the estimated propensity score and treatment indicator. This approach can be highly efficient when model assumptions are valid, but can lead to biased results when the assumptions are violated. We extend the simple regression adjustment to a varying coefficient regression model that allows for nonlinear association between outcome and propensity score. We discuss its connection with some propensity score matching and weighting methods, and show that the proposed analytical framework can s

Predictors of the severity of oral submucous fibrosis among gutka consumers: a regression analysis.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is an insidious chronic disease of the oral mucosa that is characterised by severely limited mouth opening, blanching of the oral mucosa, and a burning sensation in the oral cavity. Consumption of betel nut and/or gutka are the known risk factors. We undertook this study to correlate the frequency and duration of gutka intake with the severity of OSMF and to determine the predictors of severe OSMF (mouth opening <20mm). A cross sectional study was conducted on 300 participants (who were known gutka chewers) selected at the Baqai Dental College and Fatima Hospital

Determinants of outcomes in laparoscopic colorectal surgery: a multiple regression analysis of 416 resections.

BACKGROUND: To date, most large series of laparoscopic colorectal procedures have been descriptive reports that do not account for the potentially complex interaction of outcome predictors. The purpose of this study was to identify the preoperative factors that predict operative time, conversion to open surgery, and intraoperative and postoperative complications in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. METHODS: Multiple regression techniques were used to analyze 416 laparoscopic resections from a prospective database of laparoscopic colorectal procedures performed between April 1991 and April 1998

Polytomous logistic regression analysis of the General Health Questionnaire and the Present State Examination.

First, two examples of dichotomous logistic regression analysis are presented. The probability of being a psychiatric case according to the Present State Examination is predicted from the total score on the General Health Questionnaire and from the general practitioner's judgement on the presence of a mental health problem. Subjects were 292 primary care attenders. Results are compared with those from prior studies. Next, the extension to the polytomous case is demonstrated. The probability of being at any given level of the Index of Definition (computed from PSE data) is estimated from the Ge

The use of radionuclide angiography in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease--a logistic regression analysis.

We applied logistic regression analysis to a group of 736 patients with chest pain to determine which radionuclide angiographic (RNA) parameters were most useful in the diagnosis of significant coronary artery disease. The most useful parameters were exercise ejection fraction, exercise heart rate, "ischemia score," and the presence of a regional wall motion abnormality at exercise. Ten clinical variables were used in one logistic regression model to estimate each patient's pretest probability of disease. A second logistic regression model considered these clinical variables and the four impor

Incidence and Prognostic Implications of Cardiac-Implantable Device-Associated Tricuspid Regurgitation: A Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression Analysis.

New-onset or worsening tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a well-established complication encountered after cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). However, there are limited and conflicting data on the true incidence and prognostic implications of this complication. This study aimed to bridge this current gap in the literature. Electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to March 2023, for studies reporting the incidence and/or prognosis of CIED-associated new or worsening TR. Potentially eligible studies were screened and selected

Relationship between obsessive compulsive symptomatology and severity of psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia: Meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia patients often show obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and their presence has been associated with poorer prognosis. However, the impact of OCS/OCD on psychotic severity remains unclear. The aim of this study is twofold: 1) to investigate the effect of OCS/OCD on the severity of positive, negative, and global psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia patients and 2) to analyze the effect of patient and study-related covariates on moderating this relationship. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) of studies comparing

Approximating vaccine delivery costs to reach zero-dose children: a Bayesian meta-regression analysis.

The Immunization Agenda 2030 calls for reaching all people with immunization services, including "zero-dose" children-children who have not received any routine vaccines. To plan and finance efforts to fully vaccinate these children and improve coverage and equity, decision-makers need reliable cost estimates. However, primary data on the costs of reaching zero-dose children, typically part of disadvantaged and hard-to-reach populations, are scarce. This study approximates these costs using standardized, country-level estimates of vaccine delivery unit costs for outreach delivery in low- and m

Predictors of Quality of Life Among Middle-Aged Saudi Women: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged women in Saudi Arabia are navigating a significant period of life transition during the rapid socioeconomic shift driven by the Saudi Vision 2030. Evidence indicates that chronic diseases are associated with poor quality of life (QoL), whereas competing employment and family responsibilities may further influence well-being. Psychosocial resources, including life satisfaction, family role satisfaction, and social support, are important predictors of QoL. Although clinical research often focuses on the physiological changes during this stage, the hierarchical influence o
