Adverse event surveillance in small animal anaesthesia: an intervention-based, voluntary reporting audit.

OBJECTIVE: To develop, test and refine an 'intervention-based' system for the surveillance of adverse events (AEs) during small animal anaesthesia. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, voluntary reporting audit. ANIMALS: A total of 1386 consecutive small animal anaesthetics (including 972 dogs and 387 cats). METHODS: Adverse events were defined as undesirable perianaesthetic events requiring remedial intervention to prevent or limit patient morbidity. Using previous reports, 11 common AEs were selected and 'intervention-based' definitions were devised. A voluntary reporting audit was performed over 1

Effects of bottom-up and top-down intervention principles in emergent literacy in children at risk of developmental dyslexia: a longitudinal study.

This longitudinal study focused on the effects of two different principles of intervention in children at risk of developing dyslexia from 5 to 8 years old. The children were selected on the basis of a background questionnaire given to parents and preschool teachers, with cognitive and functional magnetic resonance imaging results substantiating group differences in neuropsychological processes associated with phonology, orthography, and phoneme-grapheme correspondence (i.e., alphabetic principle). The two principles of intervention were bottom-up (BU), "from sound to meaning", and top-down (T

Neural correlates of rapid auditory processing are disrupted in children with developmental dyslexia and ameliorated with training: an fMRI study.

PURPOSE: Developmental dyslexia, characterized by unexpected difficulty in reading, may involve a fundamental deficit in processing rapid acoustic stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we previously reported that adults with developmental dyslexia have a disruption in neural response to rapid acoustic stimuli in left prefrontal cortex. Here we examined the neural correlates of rapid auditory processing in children. METHODS: Whole-brain fMRI was performed on twenty-two children with developmental dyslexia and twenty-three typical-reading children while they listened to no

Teaching reading to disabled readers with language disorders: a controlled evaluation of synthetic speech feedback.

In a long-term study two groups of language and reading impaired students (N = 15 + 15) were reading with the aid of segmented speech-feedback in a computerized program. One group received feedback that was simultaneously segmented visually and auditorily into syllables, the other received feedback by letter names. In both groups subjects were expected to synthesize segments into words and to compare their synthesis to whole word feed-back subsequently provided by the computer. They worked for half a lesson (approximately 20 minutes) a day for a total of 40 days. During this period the experim

Drug Prescribing Patterns in Pediatric Urinary Tract Infections: A Retrospective Drug Utilization Analysis in an Urban Tertiary Care Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: A constant update of antibiotic sensitivity of pathogens of the area, country, or institution helps in interventions that would improve the prescribing pattern and rational use of drugs in children. This study aimed to assess prescribing trends for urinary tract infection (UTI), a common distressful pediatric infection in a tertiary care teaching hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, and record-based analysis including pediatric patients aged <18 years of either gender diagnosed with UTI. The case record files retrieved fr

Developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia is a specific learning disability affecting the normal acquisition of arithmetic skills. Genetic, neurobiologic, and epidemiologic evidence indicates that dyscalculia, like other learning disabilities, is a brain-based disorder. However, poor teaching and environmental deprivation have also been implicated in its etiology. Because the neural network of both hemispheres comprises the substrate of normal arithmetic skills, dyscalculia can result from dysfunction of either hemisphere, although the left parietotemporal area is of particular significance. The prevalence of

Complications of traditional Chinese/herbal medicines (TCM)--a guide for perplexed oncologists and other cancer caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer patients often seek complementary or alternative medicines to supplement or replace treatments prescribed by licensed medical practitioners. Traditional Chinese/herbal medicine (TCM) is a popular complementary intervention among cancer patients of Asian ethnicity, many of whom take it during their conventional treatment. Few of these patients inform their doctors, however, creating a risk of unexpected sequelae arising from either pharmacologic toxicity, unsuitable dosing, interactions with anti-cancer drugs or other medications, adulteration, or idiosyncratic reactions. I

Reading skill and neural processing accuracy improvement after a 3-hour intervention in preschoolers with difficulties in reading-related skills.

This study aimed at determining whether an intervention game developed for strengthening phonological awareness has a remediating effect on reading skills and central auditory processing in 6-year-old preschool children with difficulties in reading-related skills. After a 3-hour training only, these children made a greater progress in reading-related skills than did their matched controls who did mathematical exercises following comparable training format. Furthermore, the results suggest that this brief intervention might be beneficial in modulating the neural basis of phonetic discrimination

Intensive training of phonological skills in progressive aphasia: a model of brain plasticity in neurodegenerative disease.

Three patients with a typical syndrome of nonfluent primary progressive aphasia (Mesulam's syndrome) were trained daily with a remediation protocol including auditory exercises specifically designed to involve several aspects of phonological processing, a domain known to be specifically affected in the condition. The speech content of the exercises was based on the temporal theory of phonological processes according to which increasing the duration of formant transition should facilitate phoneme discrimination and phoneomic awareness. Significantly improved performance on the trained tasks was

"It Is Not the Robot Who Learns, It Is Me." Treating Severe Dysgraphia Using Child-Robot Interaction.

Writing disorders are frequent and impairing. However, social robots may help to improve children's motivation and to propose enjoyable and tailored activities. Here, we have used the Co-writer scenario in which a child is asked to teach a robot how to write via demonstration on a tablet, combined with a series of games we developed to train specifically pressure, tilt, speed, and letter liaison controls. This setup was proposed to a 10-year-old boy with a complex neurodevelopmental disorder combining phonological disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and developmental

Chronic Constipation in Adults: The Primary Care Approach.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is normally the initial point of presentation and management of patients with chronic constipation (CC). CC has a prevalence of 3-27%, predominantly amongst females and in the older population, and is associated with a reduced quality of life. Effective management can be a challenge without a structured approach. SUMMARY: Whilst conventional teaching defines constipation as the number of stools per week, patients complain mainly of other symptoms such as straining and stool consistency rather than frequency. Symptoms need to be correlated with the likely causes, and r

Science communication about contentious biology topics: why it frequently fails and how to fix it.

Science communication broadly refers to the exchange of scientific information between people, whether through presentations, discussions, collaboration, or other formats. It can serve many goals, including sharing findings among colleagues, teaching students, and informing or persuading the public. This paper focuses on communicating biological science to non-expert audiences to inform, counter misinformation, and support evidence-based decision-making, especially when scientific evidence conflicts with an audience's existing beliefs. Communicating about biology is particularly challenging, a

Inspiring rural youth to consider healthcare careers through an interprofessional healthcare traveling roadshow.

There are well-documented shortages of healthcare providers in rural and remote communities worldwide, and these shortages correlate with inequitable health outcomes for rural peoples. Despite a wide array of efforts to remedy the issue, these shortages persist to this day. The Healthcare Traveling Roadshow (HCTRS) is a grassroots initiative that began in 2010 to help address the shortage of healthcare providers in rural communities throughout British Columbia. Since its inception, the HCTRS has been predicated on three evidence-based guiding principles which have been shown to markedly increa

Academic Freedom Is Social Justice: Sex, Gender, and Cancel Culture on Campus.

I teach in and co-direct the undergraduate program in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. During the promotion of my recent book on testosterone and sex differences, I appeared on "Fox and Friends," a Fox News program, and explained that sex is binary and biological. In response, the director of my department's Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging task force (a graduate student) accused me on Twitter of transphobia and harming undergraduates, and I responded. The tweets went viral, receiving international news coverage. The public attack by the task force director

The first cosmetic treatise of history. A female point of view.

The Schola Medica Salernitana was an early medieval medical school in the south Italian city of Salerno and the most important native source of medical knowledge in Europe at the time. The school achieved its splendour between the 10th and 13th centuries, during the final decades of Longobard kingdom. In the school, women were involved as both teachers and students for medical learning. Among these women, there was Trotula de Ruggiero (11th century), a teacher whose main interest was to alleviate suffering of women. She was the author of many medical works, the most notable being De Passionibu

Strokes among black people in Harare, Zimbabwe: results of computed tomography and associated risk factors.

Computed tomography was performed and risk factors evaluated in 100 consecutive adult patients presenting to the two teaching hospitals in Harare with a clinical diagnosis of stroke. The mean age of the patients was 52; only 28 were 65 or older. Non-stroke lesions were found in seven patients and were predicted by a recent history of convulsions (p less than 0.0001). Five lesions (four subdural haematomas and one cerebral cysticercosis) were remediable. Hypertension was present in 27 (93%) of the 29 patients with cerebral haemorrhage and in 49 (53%) of the 93 patients with stroke lesions. In 2

Neuropsychological intervention in kindergarten children with subtyped risks of reading retardation.

Kindergarten children at risk of developing language problems were administered the Florida Kindergarten Screening Battery. A principal components analysis revealed a verbal and a visual-spatial component and subsequent discriminant function analyses a high verbal/low visual-spatial group (LAL: Latent L) and a high visual-spatial/low verbal group (LAP: Latent P). LAL- and LAP-children were considered at risk for developing an L- or P-type of dyslexia, respectively. As is common practice with children suffering from manifest L- or P- dyslexia, the LAL- and LAP-kindergartners received right and

The Coppin Academy for Pre-Nursing Success: a model for the recruitment and retention of minority students.

There is a clearly documented need for greater minority representation in professional nursing as the nation grows more diversified. Increasing the ranks of minority nurses will assist both in alleviating the nursing shortage and in addressing the health care disparities that plague our healthcare systems. One barrier has been the recruitment and retention of underserved minority nursing students. To address this, the Coppin State University Helene Fuld School of Nursing (HFSON) in Baltimore, Maryland developed and implemented the "Coppin Academy for Pre-Nursing Success" (CAPS), a comprehensiv
