The transition to renewable energy systems is not only a technological challenge but also a deeply social and cultural process with significant implications for intersectional equality. Citizen-led energy initiatives are often portrayed as ideal spaces for participatory engagement, yet they can reproduce exclusionary dynamics, particularly regarding gender-related injustices. With a particular focus on FLINTA*-persons this study examines how citizen-led, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) photovoltaic (PV) initiatives in Germany translate normative commitments to diversity and justice into everyday organiza

Renewable energy has made significant strides, with the cost of clean electricity plummeting, making the use of renewable electricity for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to synthesize high-value chemicals and fuels more economically attractive. Notably, certain non-copper-based electrocatalysts have shown remarkable selectivity for C2+ products at low overpotentials, even enabling the production of multi-carbon molecules that are undetectable on copper-based electrodes. This breakthrough opens up new avenues for research into non-copper catalysts. This article offers a thorough review of the la

This paper provides a brief review of biogas contaminants, examining the impact of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitrogen (N2), and ammonia (NH3) on catalytic reforming processes and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) electricity generation. Biogas, produced through anaerobic digestion (AD), is a promising renewable energy source that can be upgraded into biomethane and reformed into H2-rich syngas for SOFCs. Despite this, contaminants like H2S found in biogas and biomethane cause critical issues such as catalyst poisoning, decreased electrochemical performance, and higher maintenance costs, while NH3,

Integrating renewable energy generation with the conventional grid supports reduces carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Despite technical advancements in protection strategies, critical issues concerning renewable integration in microgrid structures require standardized solutions. The essential aspects that need to be concentrated during securing the grids are rapid fault interruption, false tripping and blinding of protection. This study proposes an innovative approach to enhance fault isolation speed through the implementation of a grid monitoring system (GMS) coupled with a fault identifica

Electrolysis of water is a promising emission-free approach of hydrogen production, making water electrolyzers important for many renewable energy systems. Electrochemical electrodes enriched with nanocatalysts can significantly advance such technologies, but the use of nanomaterials, deployed as packed powders or painted films, is generally limited by durability and reusability challenges. To overcome these deficiencies, we have fabricated hierarchical hybrid electrode (HHE) monoliths comprising carpet-like arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes covalently bonded to porous reticulated carbon

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) coupled with biomass oxidation using renewable electricity is considered as a promising strategy for carbon management. However, achieving both high selectivity and large current density over wide potential window remains a significant challenge, hindering practical applications. In this study, a Ni/Fe dual metal-atom catalyst is developed for CO2 reduction, achieving nearly 100 % CO selectivity across an ultra-wide potential window of 1.6 V, surpassing state-of-the-art catalysts. Remarkably, this high CO selectivity is maintained above 98 % ev

The conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals, such as methanol, offers a promising pathway toward a renewable energy future. However, a precise kinetic control and a highly selective catalyst are necessary to overcome the thermodynamic preference for CO2 hydrogenation to methane. Rhenium-based catalysts, particularly Re/TiO2, demonstrate high activity and selectivity for methanol under high-pressure conditions. For example, at 100 bar and 200 °C, a methanol selectivity of 97-99% was obtained. Catalysts with 1 wt % Re and 5 wt % Re/TiO2 were used to study the effect of cluster sizes. At 250

Obtaining water and renewable energy from the atmosphere provides a potential solution to the growing energy shortage. Leveraging the synergistic inspiration from desert beetles, cactus spines, and rice leaves, here, a multibioinspired hybrid wetting rod (HWR) is prepared through simple solution immersion and laser etching, which endows an efficient water collection from the atmosphere. Importantly, benefiting from the bionic asymmetric pattern design and the three-dimensional structure, the HWR possesses an omnidirectional fog collection with a rate of up to 23 g cm-2 h-1. We further show tha

The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is considered a major pillar of future sustainable energy systems and chemical industries based on renewable energy and raw materials. Typically, catalysts and catalytic systems are transforming CO2 preferentially or even exclusively to one of the possible reduction levels and are then optimized for this specific product. Here, we report a cobalt-based catalytic system that enables the adaptive and highly selective transformation of carbon dioxide individually to either the formic acid, the formaldehyde, or the methanol level, demonstrating the

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence supports the concept that traffic noise exposure leads to long-term health complications other than annoyance, including cardiovascular disease. Similar effects may be expected from wind turbine noise exposure, but evidence is sparse. Here, we examined the association between long-term exposure to wind turbine noise and incidence of myocardial infarction (MI).
METHODS: We used the Danish Nurse Cohort with 28,731 female nurses and obtained data on incidence of MI in the Danish National Patient and Causes of Death Registries until ultimo 2013. Wind turbine noise lev

Attached-algae floways have tremendous potential for use in wastewater treatment because natural algal communities show high nutrient removal efficiencies, have low operating costs, and are easy to maintain. Algal wastewater floways may also serve as a sustainable option for producing renewable energy because algae grow rapidly, are easily harvested, and can serve as a source of biomass for biofuel. However, pests such as chironomids (Diptera) colonize open channel periphyton floways and their larvae damage the biofilms. While pesticides can control midge larvae, little information is known ab

Photothermal catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable chemical feedstocks represents a sustainable approach for storing intermittent renewable energy and reducing CO2 emissions. However, this process is still impeded by the inherent inertness of CO2 and the production of multiple intermediates. Herein, we propose a strategy that facilitates the direct cleavage of carbonate intermediates to boost photothermal catalytic CO2 conversion. A highly efficient catalyst featuring active sites designed to improve the carbonate coverage was successfully constructed, composed of atomicall

Importing renewable energy to Europe may offer many potential benefits, including reduced energy costs, lower pressure on infrastructure development, and less land use within Europe. However, open questions remain: on the achievable cost reductions, how much should be imported, whether the energy vector should be electricity, hydrogen, or derivatives like ammonia or steel, and their impact on Europe's infrastructure needs. This study integrates a global energy supply chain model with a European energy system model to explore net-zero emission scenarios with varying import volumes, costs, and v

Rapid electricity demand growth, grid connection delays, and supply chain constraints create a serious risk of supply shortages and rising electricity costs in the next few years. This paper studies the strategy of adding colocated renewables and storage at existing power plants to take advantage of spare grid capacity. Using satellite imagery, we assess solar and wind potential near 3,890 U.S. fossil and renewable plants. By 2030, we find that existing fossil plants could host up to 597 GW of economically viable solar and wind without exceeding the existing interconnection capacity of each si
