Protective effects of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum BL21 against cyclophosphamide-induced reproductive dysfunction in zebrafish.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotic Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum BL21 on reproductive health in zebrafish (Danio rerio), focusing on hormonal modulation, sperm vitality, and overall reproductive function improvement. Adult male zebrafish of the wild-type AB strain were divided into four groups: control (CTL), model control with cyclophosphamide-induced oligospermia (CS), probiotic-treated (BL21), and a positive control treated with clomiphene citrate (CC). All groups, except CTL, were exposed to cyclophosphamide from day 1 to day 9 to induce reproductive dysfunctio

Transgenerational effects of environmental enrichment on repetitive motor behavior development.

The favorable consequences of environmental enrichment (EE) on brain and behavior development are well documented. Much less is known, however, about transgenerational benefits of EE on non-enriched offspring. We explored whether transgenerational effects of EE might extend to the development of repetitive motor behaviors in deer mice. Repetitive motor behaviors are invariant patterns of movement that, across species, can be reduced by EE. We found that EE not only attenuated the development of repetitive behavior in dams, but also in their non-enriched offspring. Moreover, maternal behavior d

Women's reproductive choice and (elective) egg freezing: is an extension of the storage limit missing a bigger issue?

Egg freezing can allow women to preserve their eggs to avoid age-related infertility. The UK's recent extension of elective egg freezing storage has been welcomed as a way of enhancing the reproductive choices of young women who wish to delay having children. In this paper, I explore the issue of enhancing women's reproductive choices, questioning whether there is a more significant aspect overlooked in egg freezing. While increasing storage limits expands reproductive choices for some women, focus on this extension alone, I argue, misses a fundamental issue with egg preservation that often re

In the company of cowbirds, Molothrus ater ater: robust patterns of sociability predict reproductive performance.

Many species exhibit behavioral tendencies that are stable over time and across contexts. Robust variation in sociability, or the propensity to approach others, is widespread across the vertebrates. Nonetheless, the influence of sociability on reproductive performance is largely unknown. In this study, we explore the relationship between sociability and reproductive behavior in flocks of Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater ater). In spring 2011, we separated birds into three large aviaries based on the number of approaches they initiated and received during fall 2010. Females were separated

Reversal of reproductive deficiency in the hpg male mouse by neonatal androgenization.

Some aspects of reproductive function in the GnRH-deficient hypogonadal (hpg) mutant mouse can be restored by transplanting normal fetal brain tissue containing GnRH cells into the central nervous system of adult hpg mice. However, hpg males showing physiological response to the graft fail to display sexual behavior and are infertile. We hypothesized that the reproductive deficit of these males is due to insufficient perinatal exposure to testicular androgens as a consequence of the GnRH deficiency. To test this hypothesis we androgenized hpg males by giving them neonatal injections of testost

Workshop on perinatal exposure to dioxin-like compounds. II. Reproductive effects.

This summary report focuses on current studies on reproductive effects reported at the workshop on Perinatal Exposure to Dioxin-like Compounds and supporting data noted in the discussion. Recent laboratory studies have suggested that altered development (e.g., low birth weight, spontaneous abortion, congenital malformation) and reproductive health (e.g., fertility, sex organ development, reproductive behavior) may be among the most sensitive end points when examining the effects of dioxinlike compounds. Thus, future research should target the reproductive health of both males and females expos

Oxytocin induces intimate behaviors.

After decades of classic research on its secretion from the neurohypophysis and its potential effects in the uterus and the gland, oxytocin has, in the last 15 years, been proven to be centrally distributed neuropeptide with a broad spectrum of behavioral effects. Of particular interest are reports of potent effects of oxytocin on many reproductive and social behaviors such as maternal behavior, female sexual receptivity (lordosis), penile erection, male mounting behavior and side by side contact. The nonapeptides promote a large number of key behavioral interactions between conspecifics than

The energetic costs of stereotyped behavior in the paper wasp, Polistes dominulus.

Polistes wasps engage in many behavioral interactions. Although there has been debate over the meaning of these interactions, these stereotypical behaviors can be used to determine a colony's linear dominance hierarchy. Due to the implicit relationship between behavioral and reproductive dominance, behavioral interactions are commonly used to distinguish the reproductively dominant alpha foundress from the beta foundress. It has been suggested that in order to maintain reproductive control, the alpha foundress is forced to remain at a physiologically constrained activity limit. This, in turn,

Variation in the reproductive potential of Schistocephalus infected male sticklebacks is associated with 11-ketotestosterone titre.

Parasites can impact host reproduction by interfering with host endocrine systems, but the adaptive nature of such effects is disputed. Schistocephalus solidus plerocercoids are parasites of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus that are often associated with impaired host reproduction. Here, we relate reproductive behavior and physiology to levels of the androgen 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) in naturally infected and non-infected male sticklebacks from two UK populations. In one population infected males harbored heavy infections and showed uniformly reduced 11KT titres and kidney sp

Reproductive tradeoffs govern sexually dimorphic tubular lysosome induction in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Sex-specific differences in animal behavior commonly reflect unique reproductive interests. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, hermaphrodites can reproduce without a mate and thus prioritize feeding to satisfy the high energetic costs of reproduction. However, males, which must mate to reproduce, sacrifice feeding to prioritize mate-searching behavior. Here, we demonstrate that these behavioral differences influence sexual dimorphism at the organelle level; young males raised on a rich food source show constitutive induction of gut tubular lysosomes, a non-canonical lysosome morphology th

Kisspeptin neurons as a key player bridging the endocrine system and sexual behavior in mammals.

Reproductive behaviors are sexually differentiated: for example, male rodents show mounting behavior, while females in estrus show lordosis behavior as sex-specific sexual behaviors. Kisspeptin neurons govern reproductive function via direct stimulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and subsequent gonadotropin release for gonadal steroidogenesis in mammals. First, we discuss the role of hypothalamic kisspeptin neurons as an indispensable regulator of sexual behavior by stimulating the synthesis of gonadal steroids, which exert "activational effects" on the behavior in adulthood. Gut microbiota is involved in male reproductive function: a review.

Globally, ~8%-12% of couples confront infertility issues, male-related issues being accountable for 50%. This review focuses on the influence of gut microbiota and their metabolites on the male reproductive system from five perspectives: sperm quality, testicular structure, sex hormones, sexual behavior, and probiotic supplementation. To improve sperm quality, gut microbiota can secrete metabolites by themselves or regulate host metabolites. Endotoxemia is a key factor in testicular structure damage that causes orchitis and disrupts the blood-testis barrier (BTB). In addition, the gut microbio

Olfactory communication among Costa Rican squirrel monkeys: a field study.

Behaviors with a possible role in olfactory communication among troop members were investigated as part of a field study on the reproductive and foraging ecology of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri oerstedi) in Costa Rica. All age classes engaged in the olfaction-related behaviors. Apart from olfactory investigation of female genitals by males during the mating season, no other potential olfaction-related behavior (urine wash, branch investigation, rump, chest, back rub and sneeze) exceeded 1% of mean behavioral samples. Assessment of reproduction condition appears to be the primary function of such

Prokineticin-2 and ghrelin robustly influence the sexual and ingestive behaviors of female Syrian hamsters.

Prokineticins are involved in many physiological processes including circadian rhythms, neurogenesis, angiogenesis, and cancer. Recently, they have been found to play a role in regulating food intake. Historically, proteins that increase feeding behavior in mammals decrease reproductive behavior to prevent pregnancy and lactation when food is scarce. In the current study, prokineticin-2 (PK2) had pronounced effects on reproductive and ingestive behaviors when given to female Syrian hamsters. Administration of PK2 prevented ingestive behaviors induced by food restriction, such as the amount of

Transcriptome sequencing reveals genetic mechanisms underlying the transition between the laying and brooding phases and gene expression changes associated with divergent reproductive phenotypes in chickens.

Transition from laying to incubation behavior in chicken is an interesting topic in reproductive biology. The decline of incubation behavior in chicken population has led to considerable phenotypic differences in reproductive traits between breeds. However, the exact genetic mechanism of the reproductive phase transition still largely unknown and little is known about the gene expression changes that contribute to the phenotypic differences. We performed mRNA sequencing to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the transition from laying to brooding and to detect difference in gene reg

"Such conversations are not had in the families": a qualitative study of the determinants of young adolescents' access to sexual and reproductive health and rights information in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information during adolescence has become a global concern. This study explored factors that enable or prevent young adolescents from accessing to SRHR information from the perspective of the key informants in Rwanda. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 16 purposively selected key informants from public and private institutions in Rwanda. This selection was based on their positions and expertise in delivering SRHR information to adolescents. The interview guide questions were des

Reverse engineering the lordosis behavior circuit.

Reverse engineering takes the facts we know about a device or a process and reasons backwards to infer the principles underlying the structure-function relations. The goal of this review is to apply this approach to a well-studied hormone-controlled behavior, namely the reproductive stance of female rodents, lordosis. We first provide a brief overview on the considerable amount of progress in the analysis of female reproductive behavior. Then, we propose an analysis of the mechanisms of this behavior from a reverse-engineering perspective with the goal of generating novel hypotheses about the

Role of pregnane xenobiotic receptor in the midbrain ventral tegmental area for estradiol- and 3α,5α-THP-facilitated lordosis of female rats.

RATIONALE: Progesterone and its metabolite, 5α-pregnan-3α-ol-20-one (3α,5α-THP), have actions in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that are required for lordosis, a characteristic mating posture of female rodents. 17β-estradiol (estradiol) co-varies with progestogens over natural cycles, enhances production of 3α,5α-THP, and is required for successful reproductive behavior. OBJECTIVES: A question of interest is the role of pregnane xenobiotic receptor (PXR), a nuclear receptor that regulates enzymes needed for the production of 3α,5α-THP, for estradiol-mediated lordosis. The hypothesis tested
