Imprinted genes comprise a small subset of the genome whose epigenetic reprogramming in the germ line is necessary for subsequent normal embryonic development. This reprogramming and resetting of the imprints, through an erasure/acquisition/maintenance cycle, is a subtle and tightly orchestrated phenomenon, involving specific genomic regions and methylation enzymes. Dysregulation of imprinted genes has indeed been shown to lead to several human disorders as well as to affect placental and fetal growth. There have been numerous and conflicting studies assessing the possible association of impri

Assisted reproductive techniques (gamete cryopreservation, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and in vitro fertilization) allow to propagate small fragmented populations of wild endangered species or domestic breeds. There are the best way for producing several offspring from selected genitors in order to avoid inbreeding depression. However, few mammalian species have been well studied for their reproductive biology whereas huge differences have been observed between these species. Furthermore, materials, methods and experimental designs have to be adapted for each case and each limiti

OBJECTIVES: Vasoepididymostomy is an ideal surgical approach for epididymal obstructive azoospermia. The aim of the present study was to compare reproductive outcomes of vasoepididymostomy with several anastomotic techniques, including end-to-side and longitudinal intussusception vasoepididymostomy, and partial intussusception and endo-to-side vasoepididymostomy.
METHODS: A case-control study including 110 infertile men with epididymal obstructive azoospermia with mean age of 35 years was carried out. Univariate and multivariate analyses using clinical factors were carried out to predict pate

PURPOSE: Prader-Willi syndrome is an imprinting disorder characterized by typical facial, physical, and cognitive/behavioral features, resulting from lack of paternally expressed genes on chromosome 15q11.2-q13. Studies have suggested an increased risk of other imprinting disorders in children conceived by assisted reproductive techniques. This study was designed to determine the association between assisted reproductive technology and Prader-Willi syndrome.
METHODS: Data on individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome were collected from three distinct sources and the proportion of assisted reprod

BACKGROUND: Assisted Reproduction Techniques (ART) have significantly advanced since the first successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). However, most in vitro-produced embryos fail to implant. Key steps in ART are the correct infertility diagnosis, in order to manage the individualised treatments, and the assessment of gamete and embryo viability, to identify the embryo with the best implantation potential.
OBJECTIVE: The goal for this manuscript was to present a brief review of proteomics in Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) and raises the question of whether proteomics is a good alte

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-shortening autosomal recessive disorder of Caucasians. Most of the men with CF (>95%) have congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens (CBAVD), which makes them infertile. However, with advances in assisted reproductive techniques, it is now potentially possible for these patients to father their own biological children. Spermatozoa may be retrieved from either the epididymis or the testes and combined in vitro with oocytes retrieved from the female partner. Epididymal sperm may be collected either by microsurgical or percutaneous epididymal sperm

The Italian law 40/2004 allows the use of assisted reproduction techniques only if there are no other effective therapeutic approaches to overcome infertility. According to article 4 paragraph 1, the impossibility of removing the otherwise impeding causes to achieve a pregnancy must be ascertained before the couple undergoes assisted reproduction techniques. On this premises, we sought to evaluate the percentage of couples who underwent or were addressed to assisted reproduction techniques despite a known and potentially treatable male infertility factor in fertility centers in the city of Cat

Assisted reproductive techniques, second-trimester abortions, and postpartum tubal sterilizations present anesthesia care teams with unique challenges. These highly time-sensitive procedures have unique physiologic, pharmacologic, and psychosocial considerations. A lack of relevant consensus guidelines on anesthesia care exists to address many of these procedure-specific challenges. Additionally, legal restrictions can limit trainee access to learning opportunities in some geographical areas. The review outlines anesthetic considerations and management for patients undergoing assisted reproduc

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a prevalent reproductive issue, often requiring assisted reproductive techniques (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Implantation failure remains a major challenge, especially in women of advanced maternal age, those with previous IVF failures, or embryos with a thick zona pellucida. Assisted hatching (AH) is a technique designed to improve implantation rates by facilitating embryo hatching. However, its effectiveness remains uncertain, particularly concerning live birth rates.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the impact of assisted hatching technique

In a recent article Thomas Douglas and Katrien Devolder propose a theory of genetic parenthood according to which a human child can have only two genetic human parents. I argue this theory is arbitrarily narrow and fails to account for cases such as hybrids, cloning, chimerism, twinning, parthenogenesis, mitochondrial replacement techniques, and more. I propose an alternate theory of genetic parenthood, one that is prima facie consistent with our commonsense intuitions about genetic parenthood and relevant to a right to procreative autonomy.

In modern agriculture, assisted reproductive technologies are being used for out of season oestrus induction, enhancement of reproductive performance and genetic improvement. In addition, they can have substantial contribution in preservation of endangered species or breeds, as well as in eradication programs of various diseases. While their applications are widespread in cattle, in small ruminants it is almost restricted to artificial insemination. The main limitations of a wider application in small ruminants are the naturally occurring anoestrus period, the variability of response to supero

The frequency of fetal arcadia in the world is 1:35,000 to 1:48,000 pregnancies; is currently estimated that 1% of newborns in developed countries are the result of assisted reproduction techniques and the frequency of twin pregnancies is close to 18%, of these, an estimated relative risk for cardiac defect is 1.6. However, the association of acardiac fetus, twin pregnancy and assisted reproductive techniques is not fully established. In this paper, we describe a case of fetal acardia, in a pregnancy resulting from assisted reproduction and its obstetric care.

Female infertility affects millions of women worldwide and is frequently caused by ovulatory disorders and uterine pathologies. Among these, endometrial abnormalities play a central role, especially in cases of embryo implantation failure during assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs). Endometrial receptivity, the period during which the endometrium prepares to receive and support embryo implantation, is a complex process regulated by essential morphological, molecular, and immunological changes necessary for a successful pregnancy. This review examines the mechanisms that govern endometrial r

Assisted reproductive technology is an evolving area, and several adjuvant procedures have been created to increase a couple's chance of conceiving. For male infertility, the current challenges are to properly accommodate old and new techniques that are both cost-effective and evidence-based. In this context, urologists are expected to diagnose, counsel, provide medical or surgical treatment whenever possible and/or correctly refer male patients for assisted conception. Urologists are sometimes part of a multiprofessional team in an assisted reproduction unit and are responsible for the above-

The central importance of reproduction in all human cultures has given rise to many methods and techniques of assisting reproduction or overcoming infertility. Such methods and techniques have achieved spectacular successes in the Western world, where processes like in vitro fertilization (IVF) constitute a remarkable breakthrough. In this paper, the author attempts to reflect critically on assisted reproduction technologies (ART) from the background and perspective of African culture, a culture within which human reproduction is given the highest priority but which also exhibits a highly ambi

INTRODUCTION: Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a method that uses various techniques to process sperm or ova. Assisted reproductive technology involves removing ova from a woman's ovaries, combining them with sperm in the laboratory, and returning them to the woman's body or donating them to another woman.
METHODS: Based on the web of science core collection database, we firstly analyzed the quantity and quality of publications in the field of ART, secondly profiled the publishing groups in terms of country, institution, author's publication and cooperation network, and finally sorte

Bladder exstrophy (BE) is a devastating congenital abnormality of the urinary tract in which infants are born with the urinary bladder extruded through their abdominal wall, a urethra that is open dorsally, and significant secondary abnormalities of the genitalia. We present a male patient with BE who suffered from infertility and after a long course of failed attempts with assisted reproductive technology ultimately benefitted from a synchronous testicular sperm extraction. We review the literature surrounding assisted reproductive techniques in the setting of bladder exstrophy and comment on

The duties recently performed in the embryology laboratory have deeply increased compared to those realized a couple of decades ago. Currently, procedures include conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ICSI techniques, or processing of surgically retrieved sperm, embryo culture and time-lapse monitoring, blastocyst culture, as well as trophectoderm biopsy for preimplantation genetic testing and cryopreservation. These techniques require not only time, but also high knowledge level and acutely concentration by the embryologist team. The existing data indicate that an IVF laboratory need
