Basic and translational research in neonatal pharmacology.

Pharmacologic study is needed in the extremely immature newborns who currently survive. Study is needed of both the drug treatment previously established in more mature neonates and of novel drug therapy. Carefully controlled studies are needed to identify accurately both beneficial and harmful drug therapy and the mechanisms of that toxicity. Careful pharmacologic study of drug disposition and its mechanisms might lead to dosing paradigms or patient selection that minimize toxicity and maximize efficacy. In vivo, translational models of neonatal diseases are limited, but can be used to identi

This study aims to explore the social experience of parkrun participation for middle-aged men in Ireland and considers how social connections made at parkrun relate to mental wellbeing. Online semi-structured interviews were conduc

Transitions for older people with learning disabilities and behaviours that challenge others, and their family carers: a merged protocol for two rapid scoping reviews of evidence.

BACKGROUND: There are over 1 million adults with a learning disability in the UK, of whom approximately 20% displaying behaviours that challenge others. Two thirds of people with learning disabilities live in the family home. As they and their family carers age, both are likely to face particular difficulties and stresses, but there is little understanding of their experiences and needs. To address this evidence gap, our main objective is to undertake two rapid scoping reviews that will collectively focus on the health and social care needs, experiences, service interventions and resources of

The Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Study Group Registry.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a rare anomaly with an incidence between 1/2,500 and 1/3,000 live births. The rarity of the disease makes it difficult to design powerful studies leading to accurate and meaningful evidence. For rare diseases, the development of multicenter international registries may help in collecting data and give an overall picture of the disease. In this review, we will describe the development of the CDH study group, we will describe its work methodology, and the results obtained since its birth in 1995.

Successful vaccines for naturally occurring protozoal diseases of animals should guide human vaccine research. A review of protozoal vaccines and their designs.

Effective vaccines are available for many protozoal diseases of animals, including vaccines for zoonotic pathogens and for several species of vector-transmitted apicomplexan haemoparasites. In comparison with human diseases, vaccine development for animals has practical advantages such as the ability to perform experiments in the natural host, the option to manufacture some vaccines in vivo, and lower safety requirements. Although it is proper for human vaccines to be held to higher standards, the enduring lack of vaccines for human protozoal diseases is difficult to reconcile with the compara

The need for antiviral therapy and prophylaxis of viral ocular disease.

The cost of development of a compound with clinical potential as an antiviral agent is so great that it cannot be undertaken unless there is likely to be a market that will return the investment. The current practice, assessment of the prospect on the basis of the present market for idoxuridine and calculation of a likely percentage of capture by a potentially superior compound, is basically erroneous and may lead to gross underestimates of the market. In addition to the market for agents effective in treatment of dendritic and amoeboid ulcers, there is a potentially much greater market, first

Practical Considerations for the Academic Physician Moving to a New State.

Moving from one state to another for a new position or opportunity is a common event for academic physicians. Although moving can be personally and professionally disruptive for everyone, it can be particularly challenging for academic physicians. From practical considerations such as applying for a new state medical license to professional challenges such as minimizing disruption to educational or research projects, there are numerous challenges associated with relocating to an academic institution in a new state. Despite the frequency with which academic physicians move between institutions

Social media activism and women's health: Endometriosis awareness and support.

OBJECTIVE: While endometriosis is estimated to affect 1 in 10 women globally, awareness of the disease as well as research and funding to fight the disease remains lacking as compared with other chronic diseases. METHODS: We used a mixed-method approach of combining computational analyses (topic modeling and word association) and human coding (qualitative

Experiences of Self-Identified Antenatal Depressive Symptoms Among Expectant Fathers in Northeastern Thailand: A Qualitative Study.

Depression is a major global health concern, particularly during the transition to fatherhood. This study explored and described the experiences of self-identified antenatal depressive symptoms among expectant fathers. A qualitative design was used, involving semi-structured interviews with eighteen participants who screened positive for depressive symptoms on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Participants were recruited from antenatal clinics in eight public hospitals in a northeastern province of Thailand, and all had partners with 12 to 40 weeks of pregnancy. Bandura's Social Cognit

A qualitative interview study to investigate opportunities for improvement in routine asthma care using a clinical decision support system.

More than 8 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with asthma, a chronic respiratory condition which leads to the death of more than 25 people per week.
