Differentiation of healthy newborns and newborns-at-risk by spectral analysis of heart rate fluctuations and respiratory movements.

Neonatal heart rate and its interaction with respiration were computerized by spectral and coherence analysis (FFT) to differentiate healthy newborns (n = 9) from newborns with mild neonatal risk (n = 20). An increased mean heart rate and decreased total variability have been found in newborns-at-risk. Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia is diminished in newborns-at-risk possibly caused by an impairment of autonomic brain stem function. Furthermore, Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia holds a central position in differentiating healthy newborns and newborns-at-risk with and without neurological abnormalitie

Attack rates of acute nephritis after type 49 streptococcal infection of the skin and of the respiratory tract.

Prospective studies in a population of American Indian children during an outbreak of acute nephritis associated with the Type 49 Group A streptococcus permitted a comparison of attack rates of renal complications after infection at different sites and at different ages. Acute nephritis or unexplained hematuria developed in 10 of 42 children (23.8%) with Type 49 streptococcal skin infection, in 2 of 44 (4.5%) with Type 49 throat infection, and in 3 of 16 (18.8%) with simultaneous Type 49 infection at both sites. The higher attack rate of nephritis and hematuria in children with pyoderma indica

Temporal patterns of respiratory rate exposure and mortality in critically ill patients: a retrospective multi-database cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations between respiratory rate (RR) exposure patterns-both intensity and duration-and mortality in critically ill patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed 160,075 adult ICU patients from three international databases (HiRID, MIMIC-IV, eICU). The primary analysis used a landmark design: RR exposure and all covariates were ascertained during the first 24 h after ICU admission, and outcome follow-up began at the 24-hour landmark. Heatmap visualisation examined RR intensity-duration patterns. Cox and logistic regression models related the p

Impact of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Immunization on the Rate of Pediatric Acute Otitis Media: A Time-series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media (AOM) is the leading cause of antibiotic prescription in children. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is suspected to play an important role in AOM. The aim of this study was to estimate the impact of RSV immunization on the rate of subsequent AOM in children, as this effect remains unknown. METHODS: We conducted an interrupted time-series analysis based on a French network involving 110 ambulatory pediatricians, trained in pediatric infectious diseases (PARI network). All ambulatory visits for AOM, from June 2017 to February 2025 were included. The main outcome

Lower Late Development Rate of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Patients with Lower Mechanical Power or Driving Pressure.

For patients on ventilation without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), there are, as yet, limited data on ventilation strategies. We hypothesized that driving pressure (DP) and mechanical power (MP) may play key roles for the late development of ARDS in patients without initial ARDS. A post hoc analysis of a database from our previous cohort was performed. The mean DP/MP was computed from the data before ARDS development or until ventilator support was discontinued within 28 days. The association between DP/MP and late development of ARDS within 28 days was determined. One hundred and

Prediction of high-flow nasal cannula outcomes at the early phase using the modified respiratory rate oxygenation index.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to explore the early predictive value of the respiratory rate oxygenation (ROX) index modified by PaO2 (mROX) in high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy in patients with acute hypoxemia respiratory failure (AHRF). METHOD: Seventy-five patients with AHRF treated with HFNC were retrospectively reviewed. Respiratory parameters at baseline and 2 h after HFNC initiation were analyzed. The predictive value of the ROX (ratio of pulse oximetry/FIO2 to respiratory rate) and mROX (ratio of arterial oxygen /FIO2 to respiratory rate) indices with two variations by addin

Evaluation of Pulse Rate, Oxygen Saturation, and Respiratory Effort after Different Types of Feeding Methods in Preterm Newborns.

BACKGROUND: During the initial days of hospitalization, preterm newborns are given combinations of breastfeeding, spoon/paladai feeding, and/or gavage feeding. Each method of feeding may have a different effect on vital parameters. OBJECTIVE: To study changes in vital parameters in relation to different feeding methods and postmenstrual age (PMA) in preterm newborns. Study Design. This prospective observational study was carried out at a tertiary care neonatal unit. Participants. Physiologically stable preterm newborns with PMA less than 37 weeks on full enteral feeds were included in the stu

Automated monitoring of respiratory rate as a novel humane endpoint: A refinement in mouse metastatic lung cancer models.

In oncology research, while xenograft tumor models are easily visualized and humane endpoints can be clearly defined, metastatic tumor models are often based on more subjective clinical observations as endpoints. This study aimed at identifying objective non-invasive criteria for predicting imminent distress and mortality in metastatic lung tumor-bearing mice. BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice were inoculated with CT26 or B16F10 cells, respectively. The mice were housed in Vium smart cages to continuously monitor and stream respiratory rate and locomotion for up to 28 days until scheduled euthanasia or

Recovery rate and prognosis in older persons who develop acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation increases 10-fold from the ages of 55 to 85 years, yet the rate of recovery and outcomes in older persons who develop acute lung injury are poorly defined. OBJECTIVE: To examine age as an independent risk factor in recovery and intensive care unit discharge after acute lung injury. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: 10 U.S. university-based medical centers. PATIENTS: 902 mechanically ventilated patients enrolled in randomized, controlled trials for the treatment of acute lung injury. All patient

A 9-year, single-institution, retrospective review of death rate and prognostic factors in adult respiratory distress syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, at a single institution, the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) death rate in critically ill ventilated surgical/trauma patients and to identify the factors predicting death in these patients. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The prognostic features affecting mortality at the onset of ARDS have not been clearly defined. Defining rare characteristics would be valuable because it would allow for better stratification of patients in clinical trials and more appropriate utilization of constrained resources in ICU environments. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 980 vent

Rate of thrombus accumulation on intravenacaval IVOX devices explanted from human clinical trial patients with acute respiratory failure.

The weight gain of IVOX devices removed from the first 49 human clinical trials patients after from 1 to 29 days of implantation into the venae caval blood stream has been assessed. Each patient had received sufficient systemic heparin to maintain activated clotting times between 150 and 200 s while the IVOX device was indwelling. The nature of the material accumulating on the IVOX device was documented histologically as being thrombus in various stages of development. The weight gain findings indicate that an average of 2.0 g of thrombus accumulates per 24 h on IVOX devices indwelling in the

For a clinical application of optical triangulation to assess respiratory rate using an RGB camera and a line laser.

This paper presents a non-contact and unrestrained respiration monitoring system based on the optical triangulation technique. The proposed system consists of a red-green-blue (RGB) camera and a line laser installed to face the frontal thorax of a human body. The underlying idea of the work is that the camera and line laser are mounted in opposite directions, unlike other research. By applying the proposed image processing algorithm to the camera image, laser coordinates are extracted and converted to world coordinates using the optical triangulation method. These converted world coordinates r

The surge in heart rate and blood pressure at respiratory event termination is dampened in children with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and altered cardiovascular autonomic control. We aimed to analyze the effect of DS on the surge in heart rate (HR) and pulse transit time (PTT, an inverse surrogate measure of blood pressure change) at respiratory event termination. METHODS: 44 children (3-19 y) with DS and 44 typically developing (TD) children matched for SDB severity, age and sex underwent overnight polysomnography. Multilevel modelling determined the effect of DS on HR and PTT changes between a 10s pre-event to the latte

Improved survival rates in patients with H1N1 acute respiratory failure in Korea between 2009 and 2016.

There was a pandemic of influenza A (H1N1) in 2009; in Korea, there was also an H1N1 epidemic in 2016. We aim to investigate whether survival had improved in the setting of recent advances in intensive care unit (ICU) management. We conducted a retrospective analysis of acute respiratory failure patients with H1N1 influenza pneumonia in 2016 and 2009 respectively at two tertiary referral hospitals in Korea. A total of 28 patients were treated in 2016, and 34 in 2009. There was no significant difference in SOFA scores on ICU admission day. In-hospital mortality was significantly lower in patien

Rates of respiratory virus-associated hospitalization in children aged <5 years in rural northern India.

OBJECTIVES: Though respiratory viruses are thought to cause substantial morbidity globally in children aged <5 years, the incidence of severe respiratory virus infections in children is unknown in India where 20% of the world's children live. METHODS: During August 2009-July 2011, prospective population-based surveillance was conducted for hospitalizations of children aged <5 years in a rural community in Haryana State. Clinical data and respiratory specimens were collected. Swabs were tested by RT-PCR for influenza and parainfluenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneum

Low rates of antimicrobial resistance in respiratory pathogens from a pediatric population in north-eastern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pyogenes are the main agents of bacterial upper respiratory tract infections in infants and children. In the past decades, the proportion of patients infected with drug-resistant organisms has increased; surveying at a regional level is important for understanding the size of the problem and elaborating therapeutic guidelines based on local epidemiology. METHODS: Since 1997, all isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pyogenes have been surveyed for antimicrobial resistance.
