INTRODUCTION: The varicose vein affects more than 30% of the general population. Significantly increased rates were noticed in women and older population. From the histopathological point of view, venous arterialization, smooth muscle cell hypertrophy, and hyperplasia are the main changes noticed in varicose vein disease. Some of the main therapeutic methods used in the management of varicose disease are injection sclerotherapy, conservative, surgical, saphenous vein inversion and removal, high saphenous ligation, ambulatory phlebectomy, transilluminated powered phlebectomy, endovascular manag

The common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, was induced to ovulate using a time-release, GnRH analogue. Ovulation occurred the afternoon or evening the day after hormone administration. The time of ovulation was established within half an hour. At ovulation, three fish per time-group were divided into 0, 6, 12, 18 hr and one thru five days post-ovulation to study changes in the postovulatory follicle complex (POC). Histology of the ovaries revealed changes in the POC, postovulatory follicle (POF) and oocyte atresia through five days post-ovulation. Within 24 hr, nuclei of the POF cells lost the

Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome, characterized by sudden death in overconditioned hens due to hepatic rupture and hemorrhage, is one of the leading noninfectious idiopathic causes of mortality in backyard chickens. Nutritional, genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors, or combinations of these, have been proposed yet not proven as the underlying cause. In an attempt to characterize the hepatic changes leading to the syndrome, this retrospective case study examined 76 backyard chickens that were diagnosed with fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome between January 2007 and September 2012 and pre

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) remains the sole commercial source for several pharmaceutical alkaloids including the narcotic analgesics codeine and morphine, and the semi-synthetic drugs oxycodone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. Although most of the biosynthetic genes have been identified, the post-transcriptional regulation of the morphinan alkaloid pathway has not been determined. We have used virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) as a functional genomics tool to investigate the regulation of morphine biosynthesis via a systematic reduction in enzyme levels responsible for the final six step

In opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.), (S)-reticuline is the last common intermediate in sanguinarine and morphine biosynthesis. Sanguinarine accumulates in the vacuole of cultured opium poppy cells in response to treatment with fungal elicitors. The first committed step in sanguinarine biosynthesis is catalyzed by the berberine bridge enzyme (BBE), which converts (S)-reticuline to (S)-scoulerine. An N-terminal signal peptide and novel vacuolar sorting determinant were identified and characterized in BBE. In vitro translation of BBE mRNA in the presence of canine pancreatic microsomes produce

A central nervous system germinoma is curable in most cases by radiotherapy, and most of the tumor mass disappears promptly after 20-30 doses. However, some germinomas take a longer period to vanish completely from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans. In such cases, the tumor may contain components such as teratoma. The aim of this study was to clarify the nature of the persistence of some germinomas. Five cases of histologically verified germinoma in which radiotherapy was performed to treat residual tumor were selected. The doses of focal radiotherapy and whole

A clinicopathological follow-up study was performed on 17 patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and 23 cases with so-called primary (idiopathic) osteo-/myelofibrosis (OMF) concentrating on a comparison between clinical data and multiple sequential biopsies of the bone marrow. Histological classification of bone marrow lesions was done according to the subtypes proposed by Georgii et al. At clinical diagnosis initial trephine biopsies in CML showed in only 6/17 cases a pronounced granulocytic proliferation or CGL. In 9/23 patients with OMF a so-called hyperplastic or early hypercellular

Autoimmune myelofibrosis is a distinct clinicopathological entity that occurs with autoimmune disorders. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman admitted with pancytopenia and clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome and antiphospholipid antibodies syndrome. Bone marrow biopsy showed decreased global cells and an increase of reticulin fibres on argentic coloration, consistent with myelofibrosis. The JAK2 V617, Myeloproliferative leukemia (MPL) and calreticulin mutations were negative. The patient's condition improved after treatment with hydroxychloroquine, vitam

Twenty-four patients with dermatitis herpetiformis were investigated for splenic atrophy by splenic scan and clearance of (51)Cr-labelled heat-damaged red blood cells. Eight of them had definite splenic atrophy. The average splenic cross-sectional area of the remaining 16 with normal clearance times was substantially smaller than normal, suggesting some degree of splenic atrophy. No relationship of splenic hypofunction to intestinal biopsy findings, folate status, reticulin antibody, or treatment with a gluten-free diet or dapsone was evident.

A 42-year-old man, who was previously fit and well, presented in haemorrhagic shock due to a spontaneous left mesocolonic haematoma and intraperitoneal bleed. His INR was noted to be raised on admission. Later investigations showed him to have villous atrophy on biopsy of the second part of his duodenum and a positive anti-reticulin antibody. His duodenal biopsy and INR normalized on a gluten-free diet. Coeliac disease may present with a single vitamin deficiency with potentially catastrophic results.

Philadelphia-negative classical myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) include polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). The 2016 revision of the WHO Classification of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues includes new criteria for the diagnosis of these disorders. Somatic mutations in the 3 driver genes, that is, JAK2, CALR, and MPL, represent major diagnostic criteria in combination with hematologic and morphological abnormalities. PV is characterized by erythrocytosis with suppressed endogenous erythropoietin production, bone marrow panmy

AIMS: The diagnosis of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) strongly relies on the bone marrow biopsy findings, but a report model has not been standardised. Our aim was to establish general recommendations for bone marrow evaluation and standardised reporting in a case suspicious of PMF.
METHODS: The Delphi method was employed to obtain expert consensus. An advisory panel of 10 leading members identifies a total of 37 haematopathology experts to participate. The first Delphi round included a questionnaire with three main groups of items: minimal clinical and laboratory data considered necessary befor

We present a case of a 63-year-old man with liver dysfunction and biopsy findings of venoocclusive disease (VOD) who, at autopsy, was discovered to have multifocal hepatic angiosarcoma. After double lung transplantation, he initially presented with signs of liver failure and portal hypertension resulting in recurrent high-volume ascites. Clinically, VOD was considered, and tacrolimus was discontinued, due to its known association with VOD. This, however, did not result in clinical improvement, and computed tomography eventually revealed the development of multiple low-attenuating hepatic lesio

We present the case of a 41-year-old man with an anterior mediastinal mass and constellation of clinical symptoms, including dyspnea, pleural effusions, pericardial effusions, renal insufficiency, and pancytopenia. After inconclusive results on several laboratory tests and a nondiagnostic surgical biopsy specimen, a specimen from a second surgical biopsy identified the patient's condition as Castleman disease associated with TAFRO (thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fevers, reticulin myelofibrosis, organomegaly) syndrome. This case highlights the importance of obtaining large tissue biopsy samples, i

Thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fever, reticulin fibrosis, and organomegaly (TAFRO) syndrome is a unique clinicopathologic variant of multicentric Castleman's disease that has recently been identified in Japan. Previous reports have shown that affected patients typically respond to immunosuppressive therapy, such as prednisolone and tocilizumab. However, the optimal treatment for refractory TAFRO syndrome, which can be fatal, remains unclear. We herein report a case of tocilizumab-resistant TAFRO syndrome successfully treated with cyclosporin A, indicating that cyclosporine A may be an alternative

We report a rare case of concomitant Hansen's disease (HD) and sarcoidosis. Reticulin staining may be a helpful diagnostic tool in establishing the diagnosis of sarcoidosis in skin lesions. The diagnosis of HD can be established despite negative polymerase chain reaction results for the detection of Mycobacterium leprae DNA. Finally, a well-established diagnosis of sarcoidosis does not preclude the development of another granulomatous disorder. Hence, when new lesions developed in a patient with sarcoidosis despite appropriate therapy, other concurrent diagnoses should be pursued.

Twenty-three cases of coeliac disease were found after a small bowel biopsy had been carried out on seventy patients with various rheumatic complaints. The prevalence of coeliac disease in patients with rheumatic disorders was estimated to be 1 in 243. The majority (19) of these cases were found by screening patient sera with a reticulin antibody test. Sjögren's syndrome was the most frequent rheumatic diagnosis, with a total of six cases. Coeliac disease may occur concomitantly with various rheumatic complaints, and serological screening is advisable.

Acute panmyelosis with myelofibrosis is a rare and aggressive form of acute myeloid leukemia. We describe a new case with a huge proliferation of megakaryocytes, blast cells and reticulin fibers. The patient was treated with zoledronate, a third-generation bisphosphonate, and a gradual recovery from pancytopenia was observed. A new bone marrow biopsy performed 4 months later showed a surprising disappearance of the leukemic infiltration. Ten months after the diagnosis, the patient is still in healthy condition. This may support the recently described anti-tumor activity of zoledronate.

RATIONALE: TAFRO syndrome is a systemic inflammatory disorder characterized by thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fever, reticulin fibrosis, renal dysfunction, and organomegaly. In contrast to that in multicentric Castleman disease, interleukin-6 targeting strategies seem ineffective in some TAFRO syndrome cases; however, the optimal treatment remains unclear. Here, we report 2 cases of TAFRO syndrome, where 1 with cardiomyopathy, successfully treated with tacrolimus. This is the first case report of successful treatment with tacrolimus in TAFRO syndrome.
