Impact of the CHOICES Intervention in Preventing Alcohol-Exposed Pregnancies in American Indian Women.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) comprise a continuum of lifelong outcomes in those born prenatally exposed to alcohol. Although studies have shown no differences in rates by race, FASD is of particular concern for American Indian communities. One tribally run prevention program is the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) CHOICES Program, which is modeled after the evidence-based CHOICES program that was focused on preconceptional prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) by reducing risky drinking in women at risk for pregnancy and/or preventing unintended pregnancy. METHODS: The

Condom use consistency among South African HIV serodiscordant couples following an HIV risk-reduction intervention.

Background: Although there are several ways to transmit HIV, condomless sex remains the primary mode in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, with KwaZulu-Natal Province being one of the epicentres of HIV infection. This study explored the use of condoms in serodiscordant couples who were exposed to an HIV-risk reduction intervention that aimed to improve condom use and reduce the spread of HIV.Methods: A Total of 30 couples completed a paper-based questionnaire on their demographics and general health at baseline and 3 months, plus a semi-structured questionnaire with four domains. Peer counselling versus standard-of-care on reducing high-risk behaviours among newly diagnosed HIV-positive men who have sex with men in Beijing, China: a randomized intervention study.

INTRODUCTION: Reducing high-risk behaviours (i.e. multiple partnership, condomless anal/vaginal sex, alcohol use before sex, illicit drug use) after HIV diagnosis is critical for curtailing HIV transmission. We designed an intervention to explore peer- counselling in reducing high-risk behaviours among newly diagnosed HIV-positive Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: We randomized 367 newly diagnosed HIV-positive men to either standard-of-care (SOC; n = 183) or peer-counselling intervention (n = 184), and followed them for 12 months (visit at 0-, 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-month). Understanding the HIV risk reduction needs of heterosexual African American substance-abusing men.

With the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS, nurses find themselves caring for diverse populations at risk for HIV. One subpopulation at risk is African American men with a history of substance use. To better understand the risk reduction needs of these men, a focus group was conducted with 16 African American men attending an outpatient drug treatment program in Philadelphia. The purpose was to identify perceptions of HIV risk, engagement in HIV risk behaviors, and barriers to condom use in order to generate recommendations for risk reduction programs tailored to the needs of this population.

Development and evaluation of an HIV-risk reduction program for female college students.

College students are engaging in high rates of behavior related to risk of infection from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A cognitive-behavioral skills training program for heterosexual college females focused on sexual assertiveness skills and the reduction of risk-related behaviors was designed and evaluated compared with an education-only program. Participants completed pre-intervention, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up assessments of: (a) HIV/STD-related knowledge and beliefs; (b) sexual, alcohol, and drug-related behaviors; and

Contingency management for the treatment of methamphetamine use disorder: A systematic review.

Methamphetamine use continues to be an important public health problem. Contingency management is among the most effective interventions for reducing methamphetamine use. It has been more than ten years since the last systematic review of contingency management for methamphetamine use disorder. Since then, an additional ten randomized controlled trials and a variety of other studies have been completed. The present systematic review includes 27 studies. Several factors, most notably problem severity, appear to predict treatment outcome. However, the effectiveness of CM has been demonstrated in

Optimal diet and lifestyle strategies for the management of cardio-metabolic risk.

Cardio-metabolic risk (CMR) embodies a clustering of metabolic abnormalities that increase the likelihood of developing CVD in the large arteries of the heart, peripheral tissues and brain. These abnormalities share a common origin of insulin resistance, which manifests typically as excess visceral adipose tissue in the abdominal cavity, and within cells of key metabolic tissues (ectopic fat), including the liver, pancreas, heart and skeletal muscle. As expected, the increased risk of CVD that can be attributed to CMR factors is alarmingly high in overweight and obese populations, but this ris

Assessing Additive Interactions between Protective Factors Using Relative Risk Reduction Due to Interaction.

Background and Objectives: In the context of disease prevention, interaction on an additive scale is commonly assessed to determine synergistic effects between exposures. While the "Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction" represents the main measure of additive interaction between risk factors, in this study we aimed to extend this approach to assess additive interaction between factors known to prevent the event's occurrence, such as medical interventions and drugs. Materials and Methods: We introduced and described the "Relative Risk Reduction due to Interaction" (RRRI) as a key measure to

Cardiovascular risk reduction in patients with diabetes mellitus and/or chronic kidney disease-an update.

People with diabetes mellitus have a significantly increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease as well as chronic kidney disease. The coexistence of these comorbidities has a significant impact on prognosis. In August 2023, the European Society of Cardiology published new guidelines that include specific recommendations for risk reduction in those affected. The key points of these guidelines, as well as recently published data and their respective practical relevance, are presented in this article.

Prevention and rehabilitation after heart transplantation: A clinical consensus statement of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology, Heart Failure Association of the ESC, and the European Cardio Thoracic Transplant Association, a section of ESOT.

Little is known either about either physical activity patterns, or other lifestyle-related prevention measures in heart transplantation (HTx) recipients. The history of HTx started more than 50 years ago but there are still no guidelines or position papers highlighting the features of prevention and rehabilitation after HTx. The aims of this scientific statement are (i) to explain the importance of prevention and rehabilitation after HTx, and (ii) to promote the factors (modifiable/non-modifiable) that should be addressed after HTx to improve patients' physical capacity, quality of life and su

Fracture and Bone Mineral Density Response by Baseline Risk in Patients Treated With Abaloparatide Followed by Alendronate: Results From the Phase 3 ACTIVExtend Trial.

In the randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind phase 3 ACTIVE study (NCT01343004), 18 months of abaloparatide 80 μg daily (subcutaneous injection) in postmenopausal women at risk of osteoporotic fracture significantly reduced the risk of vertebral, nonvertebral, clinical, and major osteoporotic fractures and significantly increased bone mineral density (BMD) versus placebo regardless of baseline risk factors. Women from the abaloparatide and placebo groups who completed ACTIVE were eligible for ACTIVExtend (NCT01657162), in which all enrollees received sequential, open-label monotherapy w

Sexual dysfunction and cardiac risk (the Second Princeton Consensus Conference).

Recent studies have highlighted the relation between erectile dysfunction (ED) and cardiovascular disease. In particular, the role of endothelial dysfunction and nitric oxide in ED and atherosclerotic disease has been elucidated. Given the large number of men receiving medical treatment for ED, concerns regarding the risk for sexual activity triggering acute cardiovascular events and potential risks of adverse or unanticipated drug interactions need to be addressed. A risk stratification algorithm was developed by the First Princeton Consensus Panel to evaluate the degree of cardiovascular ris
