Two cases of vascular complications after urologic robotic surgery.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of the lower extremity is common and includes aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD). Moreover, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and is now treated with surgical robotic-assisted procedures. This paper overviews two cases of limb ischemia after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) and their resolution. During both RARP, limb ischemia occurred due to the robotic instrument compressing the modified vascular structure. Indeed, in the surgical history of the concerned patients, one was treated by an endovascular procedure and the other one wa

Pure Robotic Surgery for Intraluminally Growing Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors around the Esophagogastric junction or Pyloric Ring.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Laparoscopic resection of gastrointestinal stromal tumors has become wide-spread as a minimally invasive surgical method. However, the limitations of laparoscopic surgery for GISTs are well recognized. METHODOLOGY: We developed a local resection by pure robotic surgical procedure to treat intraluminally growing GISTs located in sites that are unsuitable for laparoscopic surgery. Using articulated robotic arms, the GIST is completely excised with a safe margin while employing a unique technique to provide a good operative view and to prevent the intra-abdominal dissemination o

Robotic pediatric urology.

Robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery is penetrating pediatric urology. The freedom afforded by the "surgical actuators" has led to the expanding adoption of robotics, and it is unlikely that much of laparoscopy will not trend toward some iteration of robotic influence. The da Vinci surgical system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA) provides delicate telemanipulation, coalesced with three-dimensional visualization and superior magnification. It has bridged the gap between laparoscopy and open surgery. Nonetheless, a confident understanding of pure laparoscopy is paramount in the event t

Contemporary analysis of early outcomes following robotic cholecystectomy in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, robotic-assisted approaches for cholecystectomy have represented a rapidly increasing proportion of all cases. Despite purported advantages in improved visualization and dexterity, recent studies have suggested increased rates of bile duct injury. These studies have nonetheless been limited in scope to single-payer populations. METHODS: Patients undergoing robotic, laparoscopic, or open cholecystectomy were queried from the 2016 to 2022 Nationwide Readmissions Database. Mixed multivariable regression models were then developed to determine the association of

State of the art of robotic surgery related to vision: brain and eye applications of newly available devices.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted surgery has revolutionized many surgical subspecialties, mainly where procedures have to be performed in confined, difficult to visualize spaces. Despite advances in general surgery and neurosurgery, in vivo application of robotics to ocular surgery is still in its infancy, owing to the particular complexities of microsurgery. The use of robotic assistance and feedback guidance on surgical maneuvers could improve the technical performance of expert surgeons during the initial phase of the learning curve. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We analyzed the advantages and disadvant

Is There Room for Microsurgery in Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery opened a new era of minimally-invasive procedures, through its improved precision, elimination of tremors, greater degrees of freedom, and other facilitating aspects. The field of robotic microsurgery showed great growth in recent years in particular, since robotics offers a potentially-ideal configuration to perform the sensitive manipulations required in microsurgery. We conducted a systematic review to assess the benefits of robotic surgery and its contributions to microsurgery, comparing it with other surgical techniques used in patients of all age groups. We assessed 25 ar

Robotic radical thymectomy using the Hugo RAS system - a step-by-step right thoracic approach.

Radical thymectomy has withstood the test of time as the standard procedure for treating thymic masses. Minimally invasive thymectomy, especially when performed using a surgical robot, has resulted in superior oncological clearance from the ipsilateral to the contralateral phrenic nerves, while drastically reducing the morbidity associated with median sternotomy. There is sparse literature on how to perform this procedure using a modular robotic system, which is gaining popularity. Here, we present our technique of robotic radical thymectomy through a right thoracic approach using a modular su
