BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers of children with leukemia can be emotionally and psychiatrically vulnerable when facing difficult treatment decisions (e.g., chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, transplantation). A common behavioral manifestation of decisional conflict is the verbalized expression of uncertainty about which medical treatment plan to take. The study aims to examine the associations between decisional conflict, mastery, and depressive symptoms among parental caregivers of children with leukemia in China. It explored the mediating role of mastery in the relationship.

Children living in armed conflict zones are often exposed to political violence and other risk factors that may be caused or exacerbated by the conflict, such as poverty and family violence. If left untreated, these experiences may cause psychological problems throughout life. This study investigated the psychological well-being of children living in the low-intensity armed conflict zone in Turkey in relation to their adverse experiences. We collected data from 409 caregivers for their children (236 girls) aged 5.5 to 18 years (mean [M] = 11.50, standard deviation [SD] = 3.65). Caregivers prov

Dysfunction of sensorimotor predictive processing is thought to underlie abnormalities in self-monitoring producing passivity symptoms in psychosis. Experimentally induced sensorimotor conflict can produce a failure in bodily self-monitoring (presence hallucination [PH]), yet it is unclear how this is related to auditory self-monitoring and psychosis symptoms. Here we show that the induction of sensorimotor conflict in early psychosis patients induces PH and impacts auditory-verbal self-monitoring. Participants manipulated a haptic robotic system inducing a bodily sensorimotor conflict. In exp

In the present study, we investigated the unique role of teachers' and students' personality traits as well as the personality (dis)similarity between personality traits of both partners in the affective quality of dyadic student-teacher relationships (i.e., closeness and conflict). To explore these associations, we used a Chinese sample of 4638 upper elementary students and their 104 class teachers who reported about their own personality traits and the quality of their mutual relationship. Using multilevel polynomial regression modeling with response surface analysis, we found that both stud

Medical errors remained a persistent challenge to patient safety and healthcare quality worldwide. This study examined the psychological predictors and underlying mechanisms associated with medical errors among nurses, focusing specifically on the effects of work-family conflict, work interference with family (WIF) and family interference with work (FIW), and the mediating role of burnout. A cross-sectional survey design was employed. Participants were 251 nurses (81 men, 170 women) working in public hospitals in Ondo State, Nigeria, aged between 31 and 52 years (M = 41.28, SD = 6.31). Mothers with a history of institutional care in adolescence are often involved in high-conflict partner relationships, which may undermine relationships with children and confidence in oneself as a parent. Not all mothers think of themselves as bad parents under these circumstances. We turned to psychological resources as an explanation, focusing on mothers' trait self-control. The negative association between family conflict and parenting self-efficacy was tested for moderation by self-control among 104 mothers with a history of institutionalization for behavioral problems and delinquency dur

Short-radius centrifugation offers a promising and affordable countermeasure to the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. However, head movements made in a fast rotating environment elicit Coriolis effects, which seriously compromise sensory and motor processes. We found that participants can adapt to these Coriolis effects when exposed intermittently to high rotation rates and, at the same time, can maintain their perceptual-motor coordination in stationary environments. In this paper, we explore the role of inter-sensory conflict in this adaptation process. Different measures (vertica

INTRODUCTION: Motivation drives goal-directed behavior, often requiring individuals to approach rewards while facing potential punishment (i.e., goal-conflict). Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is marked by emotional and cognitive impairments that may affect motivational functioning. While emotional deficits in PMDD are well-known, their impact on motivation under goal-conflict remains unclear. This study examined neurobehavioral indications for motivational deficits in PMDD during naturalistic goal-conflict and their relation to symptom severity.

To test the hypothesized role of alcohol consumption as a proximal risk factor for partner violence, a within-subjects analysis compared levels of alcohol consumption in violent versus nonviolent conflict events among substance-abusing women and their male partners. Participants were married or cohabiting women (N = 145) who had recently begun a substance abuse treatment program and reported both a violent and a nonviolent relationship conflict event with their male partner in the prior 6 months. The average age was 38, and 83% were White. Male partners did not participate in the study. The fe

The purpose of the present study was to examine several competing hypotheses which have been utilized to explain the negative relationship between interparental conflict and child/adolescent problems. These mechanisms of operation have included modelling, genetic transmission, disrupted parenting, the role of perceptual/appraisal processes of the conflict, and an inhibition hypothesis. One hundred and forty-two young adolescents and their mothers served as subjects. Eighty were from intact families and 62 from recently divorced families. Data were collected from the perspective of the adolesce

The long-term impact of role stress (conflict and ambiguity), cognitive rumination and their interaction were analysed upon morning and evening saliva cortisol secretion. The sample consisted of 52 male and 24 female British white-collars who had participated in a survey study on psychosocial working conditions 3.5 years earlier. Saliva cortisol secretion was measured over seven consecutive days with two measures: in the morning on awakening and at 22.00 hours. Stepwise linear multiple regression analyses was used for the statistical analyses. Role ambiguity at baseline and the interaction bet

The well-being and functioning of individuals with chronic pain (CP) vary significantly. Social factors, such as social integration, may help explain this differential impact. Specifically, structural (network size, density) as well as functional (perceived social support, conflict) social network characteristics may play a role. However, it is not yet clear whether and how these variables are associated with each other. Objectives were to examine 1) both social network characteristics in individuals with primary and secondary CP, 2) the association between structural network characteristics a

BACKGROUND: Ambulance clinicians in emergency medical services (EMS) work under demanding conditions characterised by high workload, unpredictable environments, and exposure to potentially traumatic incidents. These stressors may negatively affect their health and well-being. Understanding how psychosocial work environment factors relate to health outcomes is therefore important for developing preventive strategies in prehospital emergency care. This study aimed to describe ambulance clinicians' self-rated psychosocial work environment and health in northern Sweden and to examine associations

BACKGROUND: Interparental relationship quality and attachment are theorized to be associated with young adults’ marital attitudes, yet evidence in Chinese cultural contexts is mixed. We tested whether interparental conflict versus divorce differentially relates to marital attitudes and whether meaning in life adds explanatory value. METHODS: Participants were 398 Chinese university students (mean age = 20.8 years; 40.6% male) who completed measures of parental marital status/conflict (harmonious; high conflict without divorce; divorced; bereaved), adult attachment, meaning in life, and marital

When viewing familiar stimuli (e.g., common words), processing is highly automatized such that it can interfere with the processing of incompatible sensory information. At least two mechanisms may help mitigate this interference. Early selection accounts posit that attentional processes filter out distracting sensory information to avoid conflict. Alternatively, late selection accounts hold that all sensory inputs receive full semantic analysis and that frontal executive mechanisms are recruited to resolve conflict. To test how these mechanisms operate to overcome conflict induced by highly au

Clinical ethics consultation has become increasingly professionalized, yet many ethics consultants continue to maintain active clinical practice as physicians, nurses, or social workers. Despite the prevalence of these dual-role clinical ethicists, the benefits, challenges, and best practices associated with this model remain underexplored. Drawing on the experiences of physician-, nurse-, and social worker-ethicists, we examine how dual-role ethicists approach the intersection of clinical care and ethics consultation. We highlight key strengths of the dual-role model, including enhanced clini

Although there is ample evidence linking insecure attachment styles and intimate partner violence (IPV), little is known about the psychological processes underlying this association, especially from the victim's perspective. The present study examined how attachment styles relate to the experience of sexual and psychological abuse, directly or indirectly through destructive conflict resolution strategies, both self-reported and attributed to their opposite-sex romantic partner. In an online survey, 216 Spanish undergraduates completed measures of adult attachment style, engagement and withdra
