Are periodontitis and dental caries associated? A systematic review with meta-analyses.

AIM: The epidemiological relationship between periodontitis and caries remains controversial, and evidence synthesis is currently lacking. Therefore, this systematic review was designed to answer the following PECO question: 'In human adults (P), do subjects suffering from periodontitis (E) have higher presence/number of untreated carious lesions and caries experience (O) than subjects not suffering from periodontitis (C)?'. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational studies that met specific inclusion criteria established to answer to the PECO question were included. Two review authors independent

A model for producing caries-like lesions in enamel and dentin using oral bacteria in vitro.

Subsurface enamel lesions and root surface caries-like lesions were consistently produced in vitro using Streptococcus mutans FA1 cultured in thioglycollate broth containing 3.5% w/v dextrose and 2% w/v gelatin. When viewed in polarized light and after imbibition in water, the enamel lesions had a negatively birefringent surface zone and positively birefringent body of the lesion. Those lesions produced after six weeks, after imbibition in quinoline, exhibited a dark zone. The root surface caries-like lesions exhibited a less-radiolucent surface zone above a heavily demineralized body of the l

Association between periodontitis and dental caries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Recent evidence suggested a link between periodontitis (PD) and dental caries, but the trends and nature of this association remained unclear. The overall aim of this study was to critically assess the correlation of two disorders. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted within the PUBMED and EMBASE databases including grey literatures up to July 5th, 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to qualitatively evaluate the risk of bias. RESULTS: Overall, 18 studies were included. In terms of caries risk in PD patients, the prevalence of caries was increased by PD (OR = 1.57,

A dynamic microcosm biofilm model for root carious-like lesion development: analysis of demineralization and microbiological characterization.

This study investigated the multifunctional oral cavity simulator (MOCS) in terms of microbial composition, functional profile, and dentin root demineralization. Microcosm biofilms were grown on dentin using human saliva for 4, 7, and 14 days, with exposure to sucrose and a mucin-enriched medium. Biofilms were analyzed for microbial viability and composition through CFU count and 16S-rRNA gene sequencing. Demineralization was quantified by percentage surface hardness change (%SHC), mineral loss (ML), and lesion depth (LD). The results showed microbial viability at all time points. After 7 days

Micro-computed tomography of tooth tissue volume changes following endodontic procedures and post space preparation.

AIM: To compare the volume of hard tooth tissue lost after caries removal, access cavity preparation, root canal preparation, fibre post space and cast post preparation in carious premolar teeth. The null hypothesis tested was that there is no difference between the volumes of hard tooth tissue lost expressed as a percentage of the preoperative hard tooth tissue volume, after each operative procedure. METHODOLOGY: Twelve extracted human premolars with mesial or distal carious cavities penetrating into the pulp chamber were selected. Teeth were scanned using a microCT scanner. After each opera

Potential correlation between dental caries and intracranial aneurysm: an innovative prognostic marker for intracranial aneurysm development.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of intracranial aneurysm (IA) in the population is approximately 3-7%, with a rupture mortality rate as high as 40%. Identification of risk factors for IA occurrence and provision of targeted preventive and therapeutic measures are crucial for clinical diagnosis of IA. Dental caries is a common oral disease that affects the global population. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential connection between dental caries and the incidence of IA. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective 1:1 matched case-control study to assess the correlation between den

Epidemiology of oral diseases.

Recent epidemiologic findings for coronal and root surface caries, enamel fluorosis, and the periodontal diseases are reviewed. Incidences of coronal caries in children have continued to decline (at an accelerated rate in some populations) during the 1980s. Two possible reasons other than fluorides for these trends are a change in providers' criteria for treatment of pit and fissure caries and the use of dental sealants. Further declines are anticipated, particularly if benefits resulting from preventive programs can be extended to lower socioeconomic groups. The study of root caries has evolv

Detection of anaerobic odontogenic infections by fluorine-18 fluoromisonidazole.

Odontogenic infections are a potential risk for patients who receive cervicofacial radiotherapy and should be treated before irradiation. Anaerobic microbial infections are the most common causes. This study assessed the value of the hypoxic imaging agent fluorine-18 fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) in detecting anaerobic odontogenic infections. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was performed at 2 h after injection of 370 MBq (10 mCi) of FMISO in 26 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and six controls with healthy teeth. Tomograms were interpreted visually to identify hypoxic foci in the jaw.

Dental Caries in Older Adults: A Narrative Review for Non-Dental Providers.

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases affecting older adults and remains an important, underrecognized contributor to pain, impaired nutrition, systemic illness, and reduced quality of life. Older adults access medical care more often than dental care, positioning non-dental clinicians to identify risk, initiate prevention, and facilitate timely referral. A narrative review of English-language literature was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar. Search terms included "dental caries," "root caries," and "older adults." Sources included original studies, clinical guide

Structural events in the caries process in enamel, cementum, and dentin.

The structural events observed in enamel, cementum, and dentin during the caries process have been reviewed. In incipient enamel lesions, the prevailing concept of an almost intact surface layer has been seriously challenged by SEM and TEM observations demonstrating structural pathways (such as enlarged prism junctions or sheaths) from the enamel surface to the sub-surface lesion. The destruction in this latter location consisted of (1) enlarged prism junctions, (2) diffuse mineral destruction in the prism cores, and (3) destruction of the interprismatic substance. In root caries, the destruct
