BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral posterior external rotation contractures and scapular winging are frequently overlooked problems in residual neonatal brachial plexus injury (NBPI). Recent attention has emphasized their impact on vital functions such as feeding and hygiene. This study aims to present the epidemiology of posterior glenohumeral contractures in a significant pediatric NBPI population and explore contributing factors.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data collected from January 2019 to November 2022, involving a case series of 262 children with residual NBPI. The data in

We describe 7 cases in which supplementary sulcus-based toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) rotated postoperatively, requiring surgical realignment. The initial rotation was identified clinically between 3 months and 36 months postoperatively. All eyes had keratoconus, with and without prior keratoplasty, and 6 had longer than average axial lengths. No preceding trauma could be identified for 5 of the eyes. One eye had 3 episodes of postoperative IOL rotation, eventually requiring suture fixation to stabilize the IOL. This series indicates that postoperative rotation of a supplementary sulcus-base

The purpose of the present study was to investigate age-related effects on functional brain networks during a mental rotation task. At behavioral level age-related cognitive deficits have been shown. Cognitive deficits in older adults are associated with structural decline, especially in frontal and parietal areas and in the corpus callosum. In consequence, functional networks are affected by old age as well. To this end, a graph theoretical approach was taken, which quantifies the global and local efficiency as well as the cost efficiency of frontal and parietal intrahemispheric and interhemi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic effect of alar rotation flap for severe alar retraction.
METHODS: Patients with severely retracted alar underwent ala reconstruction using alar rotation flaps and autogenous cartilage batten grafts. First, costal cartilage was used to reshape the nasal tip and nasal dorsum. Then cartilage patch was used to extend and thicken the retracted alar. Then the alar rotation flap was transferred to correct retracted alar.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients with severe alar retraction underwent alar reconstruction with alar rotation flap and alar batten grafts. The a

INTRODUCTION: In upper brachial plexus palsy patients, loss of shoulder function and elbow flexion is obvious as the result of paralysed muscles innervated by the suprascapular, axillary and musculocutaneus nerve. Shoulder stabilisation, restoration of abduction and external rotation are important as more distal functions will be affected by the shoulder situation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2005 and 2011, eleven patients with upper type brachial plexus palsy were operated on with triceps nerve branch transfer to anterior axillary nerve branch and spinal accessory nerve transfer to the sup

BACKGROUND: Our study probed the relationship between field dependence and the development of nausea in light and dark during whole-body, off vertical axis rotation (OVAR).
METHODS: There were 24 subjects who underwent OVAR at 0.2 Hz, 18 degree tilt. Exposures were undertaken in both light and darkness in sessions spaced 5 d apart in balanced order design. During rotation, nausea was rated at 1-min intervals to a cut off at 20 min or a level of 'moderate nausea' was attained, at which point motion stopped. Before and after OVAR sessions field dependence was rated with the rod and frame test (

We tested the hypothesis that motion sickness is produced by an integration of the disparity between eye velocity and the yaw-axis orientation vector of velocity storage. Disparity was defined as the magnitude of the cross product between these two vectors. OVAR, which is known to produce motion sickness, generates horizontal eye velocity with a bias level related to velocity storage, as well as cyclic modulations due to re-orientation of the head re gravity. On average, the orientation vector is close to the spatial vertical. Thus, disparity can be related to the bias and tilt angle. Motion s

Congenital anomalies of the urinary tract system are common. The ectopic pelvic kidney is a rare anomaly about 1:2500 live births, left side being more common. Here we are reporting a case of left ectopic kidney with non rotation and morphologically normal right kidney. The case was found during routine dissection in the department of anatomy in an adult male cadaver. There were no other anomalies observed.

The soft tissue envelope in congenital contractural conditions such as clasped or arthrogrypotic thumbs is often deficient in 2 planes, the thumb-index web and the flexor aspect of the thumb. Small local transposition flaps borrow tissue from 1 plane to augment the other and are likely to worsen 1 contracture whereas improving the other. Tissue must be added to the thumb envelope from outside the contracted areas. A flap based on the index finger can be designed to both open the thumb-index web and augment skin on flexor aspect of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint. This flap is particularly

BACKGROUND: Torsional deformities of the lower extremity are common in children and are often corrected with rotational osteotomy. The effects of torsional abnormalities, and the effects of corrective osteotomy, are not well understood. A study of children with isolated idiopathic tibial torsional pathology undergoing a single corrective procedure may assist in understanding the biomechanics of torsional deformities and the effect of surgical correction.
METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative gait analyses were performed for eight subjects (eleven sides) with idiopathic excessive inward tibi

PURPOSE: To assess how suture type and suture construct in an augmented Weaver-Dunn reconstruction affect coracoclavicular sling failure and rotary stability.
METHODS: Fifteen cadaveric shoulders were tested in rotation about the long axis of the clavicle with 10 lb of simulated arm weight. The clavicle was rotated 50 degrees about its long axis, and the applied torque was recorded. Next, modified Weaver-Dunn reconstruction was conducted. Two types of coracoclavicular sling (opposed drill holes through the clavicle and complete loop around the clavicle) were tested by use of 3 different sutur

It has often been assumed rotational kinematics are improved with mobile-bearing TKA designs as the terms mobile-bearing and rotating platform imply. We tested this assumption by assessing the in vivo axial rotation magnitudes and patterns of 527 knees implanted with 12 different mobile-bearing TKA designs. Implants were grouped and compared by type--posterior stabilized (PS), posterior cruciate retaining (PCR), and posterior cruciate sacrificing (PCS)--and by specific design. We hypothesized all three mobile-bearing types (PS, PCR, and PCS) would achieve greater than 10 degrees average axial

PURPOSE: Tibial osteotomy is used to treat a variety of orthopedic conditions, including reduction in pain and improvement of deformity and function. In templating for surgery, accurate radiographic measurement aids in planning for correction. The purpose of our study was to examine the effect of internal rotation and external rotation on measurement of tibial sawbone models with 5 closing wedge varus deformities at 10-degree increments between 10 and 50 degrees. One sawbone without deformity served as the control.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 66 radiographs were measured by 5 individuals. Measur

The purpose of this study was to determine whether strength deficits could be detected in individuals with and without shoulder impingement, all of whom had normal shoulder strength bilaterally according to grading of manual muscle testing. Strength of the internal rotators and external rotators was tested isokinetically at 60 degrees /s and 180 degrees /s, as well as manually with a handheld dynamometer (HHD) in 17 patients and 22 control subjects. Testing was performed with the shoulder positioned in the scapular plane and in 90 degrees of shoulder abduction with 90 degrees of elbow flexion

BACKGROUND: It is important to deal with the scapula when developing rehabilitation strategies for the shoulder complex. This requires clinical measurement tools that are readily available and easy to apply and which provide a reliable evaluation of scapula motion.
AIM: To determine the reliability of the Plurimeter-V gravity inclinometer for the measurement of scapular upward rotation positions during humeral elevation in coronal abduction in a group of patients with shoulder pathology.
METHOD: Twenty six patients were assessed in two repeat tests within a single testing session. Patients e

BACKGROUND: Deltoid incompetence in association with an isolated fibular fracture is assumed to be present if there is medial tenderness, ecchymosis, or substantial swelling. We sought to determine whether these soft-tissue indicators predict deltoid incompetence by comparing such findings with the findings on stress radiographs.
METHODS: Over a thirty-two-month period, 138 patients who presented acutely with a Weber type-B supination-external rotation (SE) fibular fracture were evaluated for tenderness (in nine locations), ecchymosis, and swelling. Patients who presented with an apparently i

We have calculated an ab initio HCN/HNC linelist for all transitions up to J= 25 and 18000 cm(-1) above the zero point energy. This linelist contains more than 200 million lines each with frequencies and transition dipoles. The linelist has been calculated using our semi-global HCN/HNC VQZANO + PES and dipole moment surface, which were reported in van Mourik et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 115 (2001) 3706). With this linelist we synthesise absorption spectra of HCN and HNC at 298 K and we present the band centre and band transition dipoles for the bands which are major features in these spectra. Severa
