Peste des Petits Ruminants is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease of small ruminants. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2025 across four districts of the Union Territory of Puducherry, namely Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, to determine the serological and molecular status of the Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus. A total of 665 serum samples and 459 nasal swabs were collected from sheep and goats. Screening of small ruminant was using competitive ELISA showed an overall seroprevalence of 33.98%, with district level estimates of 34.5% in Puducherry, 31

Brain abscesses in ruminants often arise from primary infection foci, leading to an unfavorable prognosis for affected animals. This highlights the need for comprehensive studies on brain abscesses across different ruminant species. We retrospectively investigated medical records of epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging, anatomopathological, and bacteriological findings in six ruminants (three goats, two cows, and one sheep) diagnosed with brain abscesses. All animals studied were female. Apathy (50%), compulsive walking (33%), decreased facial sensitivity (33%), head pressing (33%), seizure

Giardia spp. is a flagellated protozoan that parasitizes the small intestine of various mammals, birds, and amphibians, being transmitted via the fecal-oral route. Giardiasis is one of the most prevalent parasitic diseases in both developed and developing countries, with a prevalence of 0,1-5% and 20-30%, respectively, and is correlated with poor hygiene practices, such as irregular handwashing, which consequently contaminates food when handled. Cattle and sheep are sources of infection for humans due to the zoonotic potential of the species that affect them, especially calves, which play an i

Animal fasciolosis occurs every year as an occasional problem in Samsun Province, especially of grazing animals in the Kizilirmak and Yesilirmak Deltas and surrounding areas. On occasions, dead animals or internal organs, including livers, lungs and hearts, are submitted to the Parasitology Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ondokuz Mayis University for diagnostic purposes. Upon diagnosis of fasciolosis, the owners and veterinarians are informed about prevention measures and treatment of the disease. In that context, the livers and gallbladders of one sheep, one cow and two wa

Small ruminant production is a common agricultural activity worldwide. However, studies on the fungal microbiota of these animals are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed at isolating yeasts from goats and sheep and evaluating the antifungal susceptibility of the recovered Candida albicans. A total of 120 animals from farms in Ceará State, Brazil, were assessed in this study. The samples were collected from nasal, oral and rectal cavities with sterile swabs. Candida spp., Trichosporon spp. and Rhodotorula spp. were isolated from small ruminants. Resistance to three azole drugs was observed in C

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii, a Gram negative bacterium present worldwide. Small ruminants are considered the main reservoirs for infection of humans. This study aimed to estimate the extent of C. burnetii infection among sheep and goats in part of The Gambia.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This survey was carried out from March to May 2012 at two areas in The Gambia. The first area comprised a cluster of seven rural villages situated 5-15 km west of Farafenni as well as the local abattoir. A second sampling was done at the central abattoir in Abuko (30 km fr

Irrespective of aetiology, infectious respiratory diseases of sheep and goats contribute to 5.6 percent of the total diseases of small ruminants. These infectious respiratory disorders are divided into two groups: the diseases of upper respiratory tract, namely, nasal myiasis and enzootic nasal tumors, and diseases of lower respiratory tract, namely, peste des petits ruminants (PPR), parainfluenza, Pasteurellosis, Ovine progressive pneumonia, mycoplasmosis, caprine arthritis encephalitis virus, caseous lymphadenitis, verminous pneumonia, and many others. Depending upon aetiology, many of them

BACKGROUND: The use of medicinal plants is an option for livestock farmers who are not allowed to use allopathic drugs under certified organic programs or cannot afford to use allopathic drugs for minor health problems of livestock.
METHODS: In 2003 we conducted semi-structured interviews with 60 participants obtained using a purposive sample. Medicinal plants are used to treat a range of conditions. A draft manual prepared from the data was then evaluated by participants at a participatory workshop.
RESULTS: There are 128 plants used for ruminant health and diets, representing several plant

Contagious agalactia of small ruminants is a syndrome which affects mainly the mammary glands, joints and eyes. The principal causal agents are Mycoplasma agalactiae in sheep and M. agalactiae, M. mycoides subsp. mycoides large colony type and M. capricolum subsp. capricolum in goats. In addition, M. putrefaciens can produce a similar clinical picture, particularly in goats. Contagious agalactia occurs on all five continents and is often enzootic. These infections are chronic in animals and in flocks. Symptomless shedding of mycoplasmas, mainly in the milk, may persist for a long time. Associa

The acquisition and intensity of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes and with Oestrus ovis are compared over 2 years in sheep grazed intensively (26-36 sheep ha-1) or non-intensively (12 sheep ha-1) in the winter rainfall Overberg region of South Africa. Sheep grazing intensively on grass/legume pastures, spray irrigated in summer, acquired massive mixed infections of Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus and Teladorsagia. Infections were fatal for sucking lambs. Lambs from ewes grazed non-intensively on dry land lucerne in winter became infected with Nematodirus and then with Teladorsagia and Tr

Highly productive ruminants rely on hormonally driven adaptations to prioritize the use of limiting nutrients during the demanding phases of the pregnancy-lactation cycle. Glucose, the predominant oxidative fuel of fetal life and the absolute precursor of mammary lactose synthesis, illustrates the need and benefit of such adaptations. Endocrine mechanisms such as insulin resistance or hypoinsulinemia favor the diversion of maternal glucose to the placenta or mammary gland where uptake is independent of insulin. Research in dairy cows in the 1980s and 1990s identified growth hormone as a periph

Existing literature on rumination has predominately focused on depressive rumination; thus, there is little research directly comparing different forms of rumination as correlates of psychopathological outcomes. The present study investigated anger and depressive rumination as correlates of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology. Cross-sectional confirmatory factor analyses on data from 764 young adults from the Colorado Longitudinal Twin Study indicated that anger and depressive rumination were separable at the latent variable level, and were both associated with lifetime symptoms of

Microbial fermentation of carbohydrates in the hindgut of dairy cattle is responsible for 5 to 10% of total-tract carbohydrate digestion. When dietary, animal, or environmental factors contribute to abnormal, excessive flow of fermentable carbohydrates from the small intestine, hindgut acidosis can occur. Hindgut acidosis is characterized by increased rates of production of short-chain fatty acids including lactic acid, decreased digesta pH, and damage to gut epithelium as evidenced by the appearance of mucin casts in feces. Hindgut acidosis is more likely to occur in high-producing animals fe
