A case of non-scaling in mammalian physiology? Body size, digestive capacity, food intake, and ingesta passage in mammalian herbivores.

As gut capacity is assumed to scale linearly to body mass (BM), and dry matter intake (DMI) to metabolic body weight (BM(0.75)), it has been proposed that ingesta mean retention time (MRT) should scale to BM(0.25) in herbivorous mammals. We test these assumptions with the most comprehensive literature data collations (n=74 species for gut capacity, n=93 species for DMI and MRT) to date. For MRT, only data from studies was used during which DMI was also recorded. Gut capacity scaled to BM(1.06). In spite of large differences in feeding regimes, absolute DMI (kg/d) scaled to BM(0.76) across all

Influence of forage level and naloxone injection on feed intake, digestion, and plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations in dairy heifers.

Four ruminally cannulated Holstein heifers (287 +/- 26 kg) in a 4 x 4 Latin square were used to evaluate the effects of naloxone injection and forage level on dietary intake, ruminal fermentation characteristics, digestibility, and plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations. Treatments were arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial with naloxone injection (0 vs .3 mg/kg; saline vs naloxone, respectively) and forage level (20 vs 100%; concentrate vs forage) as factors. Stanchioned heifers were allowed 21 d for adaptation before a 5-d collection period. Plasma samples were collected several times on d 1 a

Effect of heat-treated canola meal and glycerol inclusion on performance and gastrointestinal development of Holstein calves.

The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of using heat-treated canola meal (CM) and glycerol inclusion in starter mixtures on starter intake, growth, and gastrointestinal tract development in Holstein bull calves. In the first study, a protocol for the heat treatment of CM was evaluated by comparing commercial CM that was exposed to 0, 100, 110, or 120°C of heat treatment for 10 min. Following heat treatment, in situ crude protein (CP) ruminal degradability and estimated intestinal CP digestibility were assessed. It was observed that the degradable fractions of dry matter and CP

Effects of roughage inclusion and particle size on performance and rumination behavior of finishing beef steers.

Roughage is typically mechanically processed to increase digestibility and improve handling and mixing characteristics in beef cattle finishing diets. Roughage is fed to promote ruminal health and decrease digestive upset, but inclusion in finishing diets is limited due to the cost per unit of energy. Rumination behavior may be a means to standardize roughage in beef cattle finishing diets, and increasing particle size of roughage may allow a decrease in roughage inclusion without sacrificing animal performance. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to quantify rumination time for a fin

In situ crude protein and starch degradation and in vitro evaluation of pea grains for ruminants.

Thirteen pea grain samples from different origins were used to examine the variation in in situ ruminal degradation of crude protein (CP) and starch as well as in vitro gas production (GP) kinetics. In vitro GP was used to estimate the digestibility of organic matter (dOM), metabolisable energy (ME) and utilisable CP at the duodenum (uCP). Protein fractions were also determined according to the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System. Degradation of CP and starch from all pea grains in the rumen was almost complete, with a high proportion of the instantly disappearing fraction. The variati

Cultivating oyster mushrooms on red grape pomace waste enhances potential nutritional value of the spent substrate for ruminants.

The use of red grape pomace (GP; Vitis vinifera L. var. Shiraz) as a source of beneficial bioactive compounds in ruminant diets is limited by high levels of indigestible compounds in the grape skin matrix. This problem demands innovative, inexpensive, and easy-to-use strategies that improve the digestibility of GP. The bioconversion of GP using edible oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) is one such strategy that has not been previously explored. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of cultivating oyster mushrooms on GP on chemical composition and in vitro ruminal fermentation paramete

[Hematologic and clinico-chemical research findings in calves and young cattle with ileus].

The impairment of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base status which is observed in calves and juvenile cattle as a result of ileus and subileus is not only dependent on form and site of the obstruction, but is also influenced considerably by the duration of the condition and any coexisting disease. This publication reviews the most important blood, urine and ruminal fluid parameters in such patients. The diagnostic significance of the laboratory values under discussion is not so great with obstructions to the caudal part of the digestive tract. However, markedly raised ruminal fluid chloride level

Optimizing forage particle size enhances rumen function and body condition in Atlas Brown dry cows under semi-arid conditions.

Optimizing the physical structure of forage remains a central challenge for improving dry-cow nutrition in low input dairy systems. This study evaluated how controlled reductions in particle-size distribution (PSD) within a mixed-forage ration (MFR) influence ingestive behaviour, ruminal physicochemistry, fiber digestibility, metabolic status, and body-condition dynamics in the indigenous Bos taurus “Atlas Brown” breed. Fifteen dry cows were assigned to three MFR treatments differing solely in PSD: long forage (> 50 mm; T1), coarsely chopped forage (10–50 mm; T2), and finely ground forage (5–1

Physiological and Productive Impacts of Including Artificial Saliva in Lamb Diets: Growth, Carcass Traits, and Fermentation Efficiency.

The intensive lamb rearing and finishing systems are usually based on nutritionally balanced concentrate-based rations. However, the inclusion of feed additives is often necessary to avoid possible disturbances of digestibility. Artificial saliva plays an important role in ruminal buffering, improving the digestibility of the feed under conditions where natural saliva production may be insufficient. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary artificial saliva (AS) on the total mixed ration (TMR) on lambs' growth performance, carcass characteristics and the efficacy of ruminal fermentat

Chronic dexamethasone exposure retards growth without altering the digestive tract microbiota composition in goats.

BACKGROUND: Dexamethasone (Dex), an artificially synthetic cortisol substitute, is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory drug, and is also employed to mimic the stress state experimentally. It is well known that chronic stress disturbs the gut microbiota community and digestive functions. However, no relevant studies have been conducted in ruminants. RESULTS: In this study, a low dosage of Dex (0.2 mg/kg body weight, Dex group, n = 5) was consecutively injected intramuscularly for 21 days to simulate chronic stress in growing goats. Goats were injected with saline (0.2 mg/kg body weight) as t

Passage and digestibility of lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay in Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) and sheep under restricted feeding.

The mean retention time (MRT) of stained hay through the whole digestive tract and its digestibility were measured in Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) and were compared with those in sheep when lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay was fed at 10, 20 and 30 g/kg body-weight. The recoveries in faeces of plastic particles with five specific gravities were also measured in deer. MRT for deer was significantly shorter than that for sheep at 10 and 20 g/kg feeding levels. The digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, and neutral-detergent fibre were significantly lower for deer than for sheep at 30,

Dietary Cassava Roots Modified by Heat-Moisture Treatment Improve Performance, Glucose Metabolism, and Carcass Yield in Fattening Goats.

BACKGROUND: Heat-moisture-treated cassava roots (HMC) offer a promising nutritional strategy to enhance energy supply and nutrient utilization in fattening goats, primarily by modifying the starch structure to increase the resistant starch content. However, a comprehensive evaluation of its effects on performance, metabolism, and meat quality remains insufficiently characterized. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of HMC inclusion in goat diets on growth, apparent nutrient digestibility, ruminal ecology, blood biochemistry, carcass yield, and meat quality. METHODS: Twenty-four mal

Review: Seasonal differences in the physiology of wild northern ruminants.

Ruminants living in seasonal environments face a two-fold challenge during winter. The energetic cost of maintaining a high body temperature is higher at lower ambient temperatures, and this is compounded by poor availability and quality of feed. Wild ruminants acclimatize to this energetic challenge by hypothermia, that is, reduced endogenous heat production and abandoning the maintenance of a high body temperature, particularly in peripheral body parts. Further but lesser contributions to lower energy expenditure during winter are reduced foraging activity; lower heat increment of feeding; a

Pseudorabies virus in European wild boar from central Italy.

All animals, including humans, are adapted to life in a microbial world. Anaerobic habitats have existed continuously throughout the history of the earth, the gastrointestinal tract being a contemporary microniche. Since microorganisms colonize and grow rapidly under the favorable conditions in the gut they could compete for nutrients with the host. This microbial challenge has modified the course of evolution in animals, resulting in selection of complex animal-microbe relationships that vary tremendously, ranging from competition to cooperation. The ecological and evolutionary interactions b

Ruminal pH Dynamics and Milk Production Response to Concentrate Supplementation in Pasture-Based Dairy Cows.

The risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) in grazing dairy cows remains uncertain, particularly when concentrates are supplemented. This study evaluated the effects of concentrate supplementation on the evolution of diurnal ruminal pH and its relationship with production, nutrient utilization, digestive indicators, and health status. Eight ruminal-fistulated multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were assigned to a 2-period crossover design comparing a pasture-only diet (PO) and the same pasture supplemented with 6 kg/d of grain-based concentrate (PC). Each 28 d period included 21 d of adaptati
