Kabuchii (Citrus keraji var. kabuchii hort. ex Tanaka, Rutaceae) is a peculiar Okinawan citrus fruit. Local farmers cultivating various Citrus fruits say that the fragrance of Kabuchii is the most relaxing, but, there are few reports on the biological effects of the essential oil of Kabuchii and its chemical components [1]. In this study, the sedative effects of inhalation of the vaporized Kabuchii essential oil in open field, Rotarod, and pentobarbital sleep tests are compared with diazepam, as a positive control. In the open field test, both Kabuchii essential oil and diazepam decreased the

Liangmianzhen(Zanthoxyli Radix) has long been used as medicine. The current medicinal parts are different from those in the ancient. As recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopeia, the medicinal part is root. However, in ancient works, the medicinal parts include root, stem, leaf, and fruit. In an attempt to find the historical basis that stem is a reasonable medicinal part, the herbalogical study was carried out on this medicinal based on the formal names, synonyms, original plant, medicinal parts, habitat of the medicinal plant, producing area, processing and preparation methods, efficacy, and indi

Laoxianghuang, fermented from Citrus medica L. var. Sarcodactylis Swingle of the Rutaceae family, is a medicinal food. The volatiles of Laoxianghuang fermented in different years were obtained by solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS). Meanwhile, the evolution of its component-flavor function during the fermentation process was explored in depth by combining chemometrics and performance analyses. To extract the volatile compounds from Laoxianghuang, the fiber coating, extraction time, and desorption temperature were optimized in terms of the

BACKGROUND: We previously described the gastroprotective effect of 2-phenylquinoline (2-PQ), the main alkaloid isolated from the bark of Galipea longiflora (Rutaceae). However, despite the significant and promising results, the pharmacological mechanisms of the gastroprotection induced by 2-PQ have not been investigated.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the mechanisms underlying the gastroprotective effects of 2-PQ.
STUDY DESIGN: We used an in vivo mouse ulcer model and in vitro methodologies involving H⁺/K⁺-ATPase and L929 murine fibroblasts.
METHODS: The gastroprotective activity of 2-PQ (10-100 mg/k

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Potentially harmful plants grow almost everywhere, hence, it is not practical to eradicate them all. However, a basic understanding of adverse cutaneous reactions and the common plants that cause each type can enable vulnerable individuals to discover the source of their dermatitis and thus prevent re-exposure. The aim of this study therefore, was to document the plants responsible for irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) in the Eastern Cape, along with their respective irritants and clinical presentations.

Acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, the tail flick test and carrageenan-induced peritonitis were used to study the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of the crude ethanolic extract from Spiranthera odoratissima roots. Pentobarbital-induced sleeping time was used to study the central depressant effect of the extract. The ethanolic extract caused a dose dependent inhibition of acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing and leukocyte migration, and produced a significant, dose-related increase in the duration of sleep. The results suggest that Spiranthera odoratissima roots contain compound

In the search for novel natural compounds endowed with potential antihypertensive activity, a new sulfur-containing indole alkaloid, N-demethylglypetelotine (2), and its known analogue glypetelotine (1), were isolated from the leaves of Glycosmis petelotii. Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. The two alkaloids were assessed for vasorelaxing activity on rat aorta rings and for L-type Ba(2+) current [I(Ba(L))] blocking activity on single myocytes isolated from rat tail artery. Both glypetelotine and N-demethylglypetelotine inhibited phenylephrine-induced con

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are recurrent inflammatory conditions that occur in the gastrointestinal tract, for which current treatment does not have satisfactory results, thus we require new therapies to combat the complex pathogenesis of IBD. Herbal medicines have been used for years to cure IBD. One of the plants from Ayurveda, Aegle marmelos (AM), commonly known as Bael, which belongs to the family Rutaceae, has ethnomedicinal properties in treating IBD due to its various phytochemicals. However, the mechanisms underlying the effect of AM remain to be elucidated.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis is associated with amyloid-β (Aβ)-induced neuroinflammation. In AD, the activation of microglia caused by Aβ accumulation is followed by the synthesis and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), and ultimately leads to cognitive impairments. Clausena harmandiana (CH) is a medicinal plant in the Rutaceae family and has been used in folk medicine to relieve illnesses such as stomachache and headache, and as a health tonic. Interestingly, CH root extract (CHRE) has several anti-in

Acridone alkaloids formed by acridone synthase in Ruta graveolens L. are composed of N-methylanthraniloyl CoA and malonyl CoAs. A 1095 bp cDNA from elicited Ruta cells was expressed in Escherichia coli, and shown to encode S-adenosyl-l-methionine-dependent anthranilate N-methyltransferase. SDS-PAGE of the purified enzyme revealed a mass of 40 +/- 2 kDa, corresponding to 40 059 Da for the translated polypeptide, whereas the catalytic activity was assigned to a homodimer. Alignments revealed closest relationships to catechol or caffeate O-methyltransferases at 56% and 55% identity (73% similarit
