Life history interviews with 11 boys diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder who had sexually offended: a sad storyline.

Little is known of the possible relationship between a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sexually offensive behavior in adolescents. Our aim was to understand how adolescents with ADHD who had sexually offended described their childhood experiences and spoke about their diagnostic symptoms. The boys' early lives and relations were unpredictable, and emotional, physical, and sexual limits had been crossed. However, many boys saw themselves or their diagnosis, rather than their parents, school, or "society," as the underlying cause of their behavior. They used diff

Multiomics reveals alterations in the gut microbiome, host proteins, and host metabolites correlating with SADS-CoV pathogenicity and the immune response in piglets.

Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) infection causes severe acute diarrhea, vomiting, and lethality in piglets. To explore the molecular mechanisms by which intestinal flora regulate viral infection, we conducted multi-omics analysis [proteomics, metabolomics, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) quantification] and 16S rRNA sequencing on intestinal mucosal and fecal samples from piglets infected with highly pathogenic SADS-CoV P7 stain or low-pathogenic SADS-CoV P83 strain. In both ileal mucosa and fecal samples, the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae was markedly higher in the highly

High SAD PERSONS scale scores are associated with subsequent psychiatric admission after suicide attempts: A single-center retrospective study.

AIM: The SAD PERSONS scale (SPS) assesses the risk of future suicide attempts; however, its utility in patients with severe physical injuries is unclear. This study explored the association between high SPS scores and subsequent psychiatric admission (SPA) among patients transported to a tertiary emergency center following suicide attempts. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective observational study included patients transported to our tertiary emergency center between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. Patients were enrolled based on their scores on the SPS: ≥5 points (High SPS group

Self-action distribution system (SADS): From neural network stability analysis to memory networks with low storage space cost.

Currently, neural network code editing is employed directly, without any theoretical analysis of its stability. This practice can lead to network instability and unnecessary resource consumption. To address these issues, this paper makes the following innovative contributions. First, we introduce a method for evaluating the stability of neural networks. Since this evaluation does not require gradient computation, it is applicable to a wide range of complex architectures. By applying this method, algorithm optimization can be performed prior to training, which helps identify potential performan

Streptozotocin Intracerebroventricular-Induced Neurotoxicity and Brain Insulin Resistance: a Therapeutic Intervention for Treatment of Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease (sAD)-Like Pathology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is remarkably characterized by pathological hallmarks which include amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, neuronal loss, and progressive cognitive loss. Several well-known genetic mutations which are being used for the development of a transgenic model of AD lead to an early onset familial AD (fAD)-like condition. However, these settings are only reasons for a small percentage of the total AD cases. The large majorities of AD cases are considered as a sporadic in origin and are less influenced by a single mutation of a gene. The

Altered insular activation and increased insular functional connectivity during sad and happy face processing in adolescent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide and occurs commonly first during adolescence. The insular cortex (IC) plays an important role in integrating emotion processing with interoception and has been implicated recently in the pathophysiology of adult and adolescent MDD. However, no studies have yet specifically examined the IC in adolescent MDD during processing of faces in the sad-happy continuum. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate the IC during sad and happy face processing in adolescents with MDD compared to healthy controls

Sad mood induction has an opposite effect on amygdala response to emotional stimuli in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant amygdala reactivity to affective stimuli represents a candidate factor predisposing patients with bipolar disorder (BD) to relapse, but it is unclear to what extent amygdala reactivity is state-dependent. We evaluated the modulatory influence of mood on amygdala reactivity and functional connectivity in patients with remitted BD and healthy controls. METHODS: Amygdala response to sad versus neutral faces was investigated using fMRI during periods of normal and sad mood induced by autobiographical scripts. We assessed the functional connectivity of the amygdala to characte

Influence of pre-operative use of serotonergic antidepressants (SADs) on the risk of bleeding in patients undergoing different surgical interventions: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Serotonergic antidepressants (SADs) are one of the most widely prescribed group of drugs. Of late, the use of SADs is being associated with an increased risk of perioperative bleeding. However, the results are inconsistent. The present analysis was planned to evaluate the association between preoperative SADs use and the risk of bleeding/mortality in patients undergoing surgery. METHODS: Studies that had reported the effects of preoperative SADs use on the perioperative bleeding outcomes and/or mortality in adult patients undergoing surgical interventions were identified and evaluate

The impact of the Val158Met catechol-O-methyltransferase genotype on neural correlates of sad facial affect processing in patients with bipolar disorder and their relatives.

BACKGROUND: The Met allele of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) valine-to-methionine (Val158Met) polymorphism is known to affect dopamine-dependent affective regulation within amygdala-prefrontal cortical (PFC) networks. It is also thought to increase the risk of a number of disorders characterized by affective morbidity including bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders. The disease risk conferred is small, suggesting that this polymorphism represents a modifier locus. Therefore our aim was to investigate how the COMT Val158Met may contribute to pheno

MOV10 inhibits SADS-CoV replication by enhancing TRIM24-mediated K63-linked TRAF3 ubiquitination, and this inhibition is antagonized by viral N protein.

UNLABELLED: The global outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in a renewed focus on coronaviruses with the potential for cross-species transmission and mutation risks. In particular, swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), potentially originating from the intermediate horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus affinis), is a novel coronavirus that causes acute diarrhea, vomiting, and high mortality in suckling piglets. Innate immunity plays a crucial role in defending the host against invading pathogens. Previous studies have identified several host factors that inhibit SADS-CoV replication through

"Loneliness is a sad disease": oldest old adults' empirical definition of loneliness and social isolation from a mixed-method study in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation can occur at any stage of life, but some predictors may be more common among older adults. Due to growing population ageing, loneliness and social isolation are relevant social issues. Many studies apply the main definitions of loneliness and social isolation offered by the literature without considering how individual representations, socio-cultural context and the culture of care may influence their perception. This study wishes to fill in these literature gaps by analysing empirical definitions of loneliness and social isolation arising from a mix

Comprehensive assessment of heavy elements and evaluation of potential human health risk in the urban environment: a case study from Novi Sad, Serbia.

This study aimed to determine seasonal (summer vs. winter) and spatial distribution of the selected heavy elements (HEs) (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb) in soil samples collected from a typical Central European town, Novi Sad, Serbia. The highest Pb concentrations were observed in summer because of intensive ground-flushing, whereas Cu had its highest concentration in winter, which may be attributed to traffic emissions. Source characterization and spatial distribution were carried out using cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), variogram calculation and theoretical model

Does respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) predict anxiety reduction during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD)?

Modifying dysfunctional emotion regulation is an important goal in psychological treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Antecedent-focused strategies learned in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), such as cognitive reappraisal, have proven more effective in reducing social anxiety than response-focused strategies, such as expressive suppression. Still, not all patients with SAD respond well to CBT. Medications and physiological factors may also influence the clinical response. The purpose of the present study was to examine the role that these factors play in determining treatment respo

Recombinant rabies virus vaccine strain SAD-l16 inoculated intracerebrally in young mice produces a severe encephalitis with extensive neuronal apoptosis.

Seven-day-old ICR mice were infected by intracerebral inoculation with recombinant rabies virus vaccine strain SAD-L16. Infected mice developed severe and fatal encephalitis with rabies virus-infected neurons in widespread regions of the brain. There was extensive neuronal death with predominant features of apoptosis, as assessed by light and electron microscopy, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining, and immunohistochemical staining for activated caspase-3. Although SAD-L16 is a neuroattenuated rabies virus, it is fully capable of spread
