Halophytes and xerophytes, plants with adequate tolerance to high salinity with strong ability to survive in drought ecosystem, have been recognized for their nutritional and medicinal values owing to their comparatively higher productions of secondary metabolites, primarily the phenolics, and the flavonoids, as compared to the normal vegetation in other climatic regions. Given the consistent increases in desertification around the world, which are associated with increasing salinity, high temperature, and water scarcity, the survival of halophytes due to their secondary metabolic contents has

The desert moss Syntrichia caninervis is one of the most desiccation-tolerant land plants known and provides a powerful system for dissecting the molecular foundations of extreme stress adaptation in early-diverging land lineages. The MYB transcription factor superfamily orchestrates secondary metabolism and stress signaling across plants, yet its lineage-specific evolution and mechanistic deployment in bryophytes remain poorly understood. Here, we identified 65 ScMYB genes in the S. caninervis genome and showed that the family expanded predominantly through dispersed duplication, with no dete

Recently, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have attracted increasing attention as biodegradable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics. This study aimed to identify bacterial strains synthesizing poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) from coastal areas of Vietnam. Strain BTNC26, isolated as a PHA producer, was identified as Salinicola lusitanus BTNC26 via 16S rRNA gene sequencing (GenBank: PZ087081). Optimization of carbon (glucose) and nitrogen (yeast extract) sources, pH (7), temperature (30 °C), and NaCl (5%) enhanced cell growth and PHA accumulation. Under these conditions, biopolymer y

Zygosaccharomyces rouxii, a salt-tolerant yeast isolated from the soy sauce process, produces fusel alcohols (isoamyl alcohol, active amyl alcohol and isobutyl alcohol) from branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine, respectively) via the Ehrlich pathway. Using a high-throughput screening approach in microtiter plates, we have studied the effects of pH, temperature and salt concentration on growth of Z. rouxii and formation of fusel alcohols from branched-chain amino acids. Application of minor variations in pH (range 3-7) and NaCl concentrations (range 0-20%) per microtiter p

Six novel bacterial strains, designated P01ᵀ, P02, P04ᵀ, P05, P06ᵀ and P07, were isolated from the intestinal contents of the Neodon fuscus collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, PR China. Cells were aerobic, non-motile, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive and rod-shaped. Strains P01ᵀ, P04ᵀ and P06ᵀ can grow at 4-37°C and tolerate 10.0% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that the three strain pairs (P01T/P02, P04T/P05 and P06T/P07) were closely related to members of the genus Microbacterium, f

BACKGROUND: Because the scientific literature on the pharmacotherapy of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is almost entirely based on the results of studies in samples consisting primarily of boys, much is unknown about the treatment response in girls.
OBJECTIVE: This post hoc analysis compared the efficacy, tolerability, and time course of the effect of mixed amphetamine salts extended release (MAS XR) and atomoxetine in school-age girls with ADHD.
METHODS: This was an intent-to-treat subanalysis of the data from girls enrolled in a multicenter, 18-day, randomized, double-blin

Accessory parathyroid tissue unassociated with the thyroid lobes is present in 5 to 6 per cent. of dogs. For the determination of the presence of accessory parathyroid tissue there are two tests: (1) the anatomical, often entailing serial sections of the neck and upper thoracic structures, and (2) the biological, consisting of the daily use of some calcium salt for two to three weeks. The latter is more easily carried out and more accurate. In the absence of all parathyroid tissue calcium salts will not save the animal's life, while in the presence of active parathyroid tissue calcium will sav

Soil salinity severely limits crop growth and yield. Deciphering the molecular basis of salt tolerance is thus critical for enhancing food security. We previously identified the SRL10-CATB module in leaf development and thermotolerance. Here, we reveal an additional, essential role for OsSRL10 in salt stress adaptation. OsSRL10 overexpression confers enhanced seedling-stage salt tolerance by promoting ROS scavenging and suppressing Na+ accumulation. Mechanistically, SRL10 physically interacts with the histidine phosphotransfer protein AHP2, a known positive regulator of salt tolerance. Genetic

Hydrogen gas (H2) effectively alleviates abiotic stress in horticultural plants. Protein S-nitrosylation, a key post-translational modification, serves as a critical mechanism for nitric oxide (NO) to exert its biological function under adverse conditions. However, the relationship among H2, NO and S-nitrosylation in response to salt stress remains poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate that NO participated in H2-enhanced salt tolerance in tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom). H2 triggered an increase in NO levels and S-nitrosothiol (SNO) content under salt stress, e

SOS1 is a Na+/H+ antiporter found in the plant membrane of Arabidopsis thaliana and serves as a major transporter that extrudes Na+ across the plasma membrane of cells in exchange for intracellular H+. The first 450 amino acids comprise the membrane transport domain. Using a yeast heterologous expression system, we examined nine different mutations that may either change specificity or improve salt tolerance. E261K had minor negative effects on the ability to confer tolerance to LiCl and NaCl. Mutation A399V had minor effects, lowering LiCl tolerance and slightly improving NaCl tolerance, as d

Maintaining the cytosolic K+/Na+ homeostasis is crucial for plants' salt tolerance. Therefore, elucidating the regulatory mechanism governing K+/Na+ transport is pivotal to engineering salt-tolerant crops. Although many regulators have been shown specifically to modulate either Na+ or K+ transporters, little is known about integrative regulators that orchestrate the transport of both cations. In this study, we reveal that a rice basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor, BES1-INTERACTING MYC-LIKE1 (OsBIM1), negatively regulates K+/Na+ homeostasis under salt stress. Loss of OsBIM1 func

Due to climate change, drought-prone areas have increased, and soil salinity is progressively increasing, leading to a greater number of regions with highly saline soils. Salt stress represents one of the most detrimental factors in modern agriculture, prompting the scientific community to seek effective solutions. Among the proposed alternatives, the use of bioactive chemical compounds to enhance plant tolerance and counteract saline stress has emerged as a promising approach. Since salt stress tolerance could be conferred by increasing the endocytic trafficking, the use of the synthetic comp

Salt stress severely limits wheat growth and seed yield; however, the mechanisms underlying plant-derived smoke (PDS)-induced salt tolerance remain unclear. The present study performs membrane proteomics to clarify how PDS solution enhances salt tolerance in wheat. Immunoblot analysis of subcellular marker proteins confirms successful enrichment of membrane fractions. Principal component analysis shows that 200 mM NaCl markedly alters membrane-protein composition in wheat roots, whereas 2000 ppm PDS solution largely restores these changes even under salt stress. At the protein level, mitochond

Soil salinity severely limits rice productivity, yet the transcriptional mechanisms connecting salt stress with abscisic acid (ABA) signalling remain incompletely understood. Here, we identify the MYB-related transcription factors OsRVE1 and OsRVE2 as positive regulators of salinity tolerance in rice. Both genes were induced by salt and ABA, and simultaneous disruption of OsRVE1 and OsRVE2 caused pronounced salt hypersensitivity, whereas their overexpression enhanced salt tolerance, indicating partially redundant functions. Loss of OsRVE1/2 impaired ion and redox homoeostasis, stomatal regulat

Environmental salinity levels vary naturally across terrestrial ecosystems but can be heightened locally by coastal proximity and desertification as well as human activities such as road salt application and agriculture. Since salt is essential for many physiological processes in insects, rising environmental sodium concentrations may drive behavioral changes, where insects select environments and food sources with suitable sodium levels, or evolutionary changes in constitutive or plastic physiological mechanisms to process salt, potentially altering ecological dynamics and species interaction

Salt stress severely restricts plant growth and reduces crop yield. Strigolactones (SLs) are carotenoid-derived phytohormones involved in the regulation of plant salt tolerance. Salt stress can modulate the expression of SL biosynthetic and signaling genes, thereby affecting SL accumulation and signaling responses. SLs also interact with abscisic acid (ABA), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and other signaling molecules to coordinate downstream stress responses. At the physiological level, SLs alleviate salt stress by maintaining Na+/K+ homeostasis, enhancing osmotic adjustment and antioxidant d

Saline-alkali soil is one of the major challenges in global agricultural production, significantly affecting crop growth and yield. Polyploid plants often exhibit stronger salt tolerance. However, the specific mechanisms by which polyploid broomcorn millet adapts to salt stress remain unclear. This study used tetraploid and octoploid broomcorn millet as experimental materials to explore their response mechanisms under 120 mM salt stress. The results indicated that octoploid broomcorn millet exhibited stronger antioxidant capacity under salt stress, with lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content in t

Soil salinization has become a major constraint on afforestation and forest regeneration in Northeast China, limiting the growth and development of Larix gmelinii. Enhancing the salt tolerance of L. gmelinii is therefore of considerable importance, and ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMF) inoculation has been shown to improve plant stress resistance. However, the mechanisms by which ECMF enhance salt tolerance in L. gmelinii remain poorly understood. In this study, L. gmelinii seedlings inoculated with an ECMF consortium consisting of Boletus edulis and Chroogomphus rutilus were subjected to 120 mM Na
