Tularemia, plague, yersiniosis, and Tyzzer's disease in wild rodents and lagomorphs in Canada: a review.

Information related to infection of wild rodents or lagomorphs in Canada by Francisella tularensis, Yersinia pestis, other Yersinia spp., and Clostridium piliforme was searched for this study. Reports on tularemia in humans linked to these species came from diagnostic databases, literature, wildlife health specialists, and public health agencies. Tularemia has been diagnosed in 8 species of wild rodent and 2 species in the genus Lepus in Canada. Tularemia occurred in wild animals, or in humans associated with these species, in all jurisdictions except the Yukon and Nunavut. Tularemia was diagn

Experiences of Health Care Access Challenges for Back Pain Care Across the Rural-Urban Continuum in Canada: Protocol for Cross-sectional Research.

BACKGROUND: Back pain is common and costly, with negative impacts on both individuals and the health care system. Rural, remote, and Indigenous populations are at greater risk of experiencing back pain compared to urban and non-Indigenous populations. Potential barriers to health care access among Canadians with chronic back pain (CBP) have been identified; however, no study has used lived experiences of people with CBP to drive the selection, analysis, and interpretation of variables most meaningful to patients. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study are to (1) engage with rural, remote, and urba

Understanding the impact of a residential housing program for people living with HIV/AIDS: results from a realist evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, the Public Health Agency surveillance of new HIV cases has demonstrated annual increasing rates since 2020. The rates of new HIV cases are highest in the province of Saskatchewan. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the project was to conduct a resident-oriented realist evaluation of an innovative supportive housing programme, Sanctum, for people living with HIV/AIDS who also face social care issues, such as homelessness. This project took place in Saskatchewan, a province that is seeking innovative approaches to improve quality of life and HIV/AIDS management for its citizens. Our

Dynamics of Canadian perceptions of low-dose radiation following science-based educational communication sessions.

This study examined whether participation in science-based Educational Communication Sessions (ECS) involving infographic-based materials, scientist-attributed information, and focus-group discussion was associated with changes in public perceptions of low-dose radiation (LDR). Surveys conducted in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario measured participants' self-reported perceptions before and immediately after participation in ECS involving two infographic formats: one explaining LDR through everyday analogies and another describing safety protocols in hospitals and nuclear power plants. The first smallpox epidemic on the Canadian Plains: In the fur-traders' words.

William Tomison, in charge of the Hudson's Bay Company's Cumberland House on the Saskatchewan River, described the devastating smallpox epidemic of 1781 and 1782. He understood contagion, practised isolation and disinfection, and provided mortality statistics during a 'virgin soil' epidemic. Above all, he showed remarkable compassion. He and his men took dying Indians into their already crowded quarters, and provided them with food, shelter and 24 h care. This article describes the epidemic and its aftermath.

Rainbow of colors: Inspissated bile syndrome secondary to hemolytic disease of the newborn and concomitant serum dynamics.

The recent clinical experience with hemolytic disease of the newborn and its post-icteric sequelae is limited among high-income countries because of nearly over four decades of effective prevention care. In this case, we will discuss the sequelae of a baby born with hemolytic disease of the newborn to an Rh negative mother with no prenatal care from remote northern Saskatchewan. Inspissated bile syndrome is a rare but serious complication of hemolytic disease of the newborn. The concentration of hemolytic products parallels with serum color changes.

Rabies in Western Canada 1978-1984.

The results of laboratory examination of 22,503 specimens for the diagnosis of rabies by the standard fluorescent antibody and mouse inoculation tests over a seven year period are presented. Specimens were received from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Of the 1,445 positive cases, 10.50% involved human contact. The main reservoirs of rabies were skunks, bats and foxes. The reliability of the fluorescent antibody test for the diagnosis of rabies was reaffirmed by agreement with the mouse inoculation test in over 99% of cases.

Milestones, barriers and beacons: Shared decision making in Canada inches ahead.

Canada's approach to shared decision making (SDM) remains as disparate as its healthcare system; a conglomerate of 14 public plans - ten provincial, three territorial and one federal. The healthcare research funding environment has been largely positive for SDM because there was funding for knowledge translation research which also encompassed SDM. The funding climate currently places new emphasis on patient involvement in research and on patient empowerment in healthcare. SDM fields have expanded from primary care to elder care, paediatrics, emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, n

The role of African Canadian immigrant Midwives: A historical perspective on community homebirth.

PROBLEM: There is limited scholarship on homebirth practices and social networks of African Canadian immigrant community midwives during times of strained healthcare. BACKGROUND: Community care planning left gaps both during Canada's historic nation building phase and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were held with Afrodescendant family members and storytellers who knew community midwives who practiced between 1800-1960 in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Transcripts were triangulated with archival searches and key community informant consultat

Initial Outcomes of Transdiagnostic Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Tailored to Public Safety Personnel: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Canadian public safety personnel (PSP) experience high rates of mental health disorders and face many barriers to treatment. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) overcomes many such barriers, and is effective for treating depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to fill a gap in the literature regarding the use of ICBT tailored specifically for PSP. We examined the effectiveness of a tailored ICBT program for treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms among PSP in the province of Saskatchewan.

Multicentric intramuscular lipomatosis/fibromatosis in free-flying white-fronted and Canada geese.

Over a period of 9 yr, seven white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) and one Canada goose (Branta canadensis) with multiple intramuscular mesenchymal tumors were encountered in Saskatchewan (Canada) and one similarly affected Canada goose was seen on Prince Edward Island (Canada). The tumors in these birds consisted either of adipose tissue, fibroblastic tissue, or a mixture of both types of tissues. The high prevalence of this condition in white-fronted geese suggested a genetic influence.

A solitary case of duck plague in a wild mallard.

Duck plague was diagnosed on the basis of pathology and virus isolation in a wild female mallard Anas platyrhynchos found dead near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Day-old Pekin ducklings and one of two adult mallards died with lesions typical of duck plague following inoculation of tissue from the wild bird. This is believed to be the only reported case of duck plague in a wild bird since a major outbreak occurred in South Dakota in 1973, and the fourth such report in North America.

Polioencephalomalacia-like disease in pronghorns (Antilocapra americana).

A disease resembling thiamine-responsive polioencephalomalacia of domestic ruminants is described in four wild pronghorn from Saskatchewan. One animal was found dead, two were recumbent and unable to rise and the fourth was staggering and ataxic. Lesions were confined to the brain and consisted of brain swelling with herniation, symmetrical hemorrhagic foci in the thalamus and brainstem, and laminar necrosis of cortical neurons. All animals had been eating grain prior to their death. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms including changes in rumen microflora resulting in thiamine deficiency, plant

Bilateral thyroid follicular compact-cellular carcinoma in a llama.

An 18-y-old female llama (Lama glama) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was examined during a routine herd check, and a mass was detected in the ventral cervical area just below the angle of the jaw. No clinical signs were evident except for the mass and chronic loss of body condition. Postmortem examination revealed bilateral enlargement of the thyroid gland with multiple cysts. Histopathology of the thyroid gland revealed follicular compact-cellular carcinoma lesions, with infiltration of neoplastic thyroid follicular cells in regional lymph nodes.
