Scorpion sting is a medical burden globally but especially frequent hotspots of scorpion biodiversity. In Iran, one of those hotspot countries, many fatalities occur in the South as well as the Southwest and are thought to be caused by Hemiscorpius lepturus. Accordingly, those are used for antivenom production. However, recent surveys revealed that indeed a different species Hemiscorpius acanthocercus is responsible for most accidents in the South, while H. lepturus is primarily causing the fatalities in the Southwest and thus Iranian scorpion antivenom needs to be refined in that respect. Scorpions are a group of arthropods that strike fear in many people due to their severe medical symptoms, even death, caused by their venomous stings. Even so, not all scorpion species contain harmful venoms against humans but still have valuable bioactive molecules, which could be used in developing new pharmaceutical leads for treating important diseases. This work conducted a comprehensive analysis of the venom from the scorpion Thorellius intrepidus. The venom of T. intrepidus was separated by size exclusion chromatography, and four main fractions were obtained. Fraction IV (FIV) contained

BACKGROUND: Arizona's rugged desert landscape harbors many venomous animals, including a small nocturnal scorpion, Centruroides sculpturatus, whose venom can cause severe neuromotor disturbance. An effective antivenom is available at selected health care facilities in the state.
METHODS: We analyzed 4398 calls of scorpion stings to the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center (APDIC) in Tucson over a period of 3 years, from January 2017 to December 2019.
RESULTS: We followed 1952 (44.4%) of the victims to resolution. We excluded 2253 callers with minimal effects of the sting and 193 victim

Scorpion envenoming is a frequent and deadly event in Tunisia. It is caused mainly by Androctonus australis and Buthus occitanus. Pulmonary edema and shock following scorpion envenoming are related to adrenergic cardiomyopathy, and are the main symptoms leading to death. Our aim was to search for the effect of dobutamine on "scorpion myocardiopathy" and to define the optimal dose of dobutamine to start with. This study was conducted in the medical surgical ICU of Habib Bourguiba University Hospital in Sfax - Tunisia. We included 21 patients with pulmonary edema or hemodynamic shock following s

We report a 54-year-old woman with scorpion bite. After 3 hours of admission, the patient developed sudden onset tachycardia with hypotension. Cardiac evaluation showed raised creatine kinase MB isoenzyme was elevated; ECG and two-dimensional echocardiography findings were suggestive of myocarditis. Subsequently, she developed transient ventricular tachycardia before developing abrupt onset, right hemiplegia, global aphasia and progressive worsening of sensorium 12 hours after the bite. MRI of brain revealed massive left middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory infarct. The magnetic resonance an

The reaction of PhBCl2 with 1H-1,2,4-λ(3)-diazaphosphole in the presence of NEt3 gives a new scorpionate ligand, phenyl-tris(1,2,4-diazaphospholyl)borate (PhTdap). The coordination behaviour of this ligand toward transition and non-transition metals has been comprehensively studied. In the thallium(I) complex, Tl(PhTdap), κ(2)-N,N bonding supported with intramolecular η(3)-phenyl coordination has been observed in the solid state. Tl(PhTdap) also shows unusual intermolecular π-interactions between five-membered diazaphosphole rings and the thallium atom giving infinite molecular chains in the c

There is a wide variety of ion channel types with various types of blockers, making research in this field very complicated. To reduce this complexity, it is essential to study ion channels and their blockers independently. Scorpion toxins, a major class of blockers, are charged short peptides with high affinities for potassium channels. Their high selectivity and inhibitory properties make them an important pharmacological tool for treating autoimmune or nervous system disorders. Scorpion toxins typically have highly charged surfaces and-like other proteins-an intrinsic ability to bind ions (

Envenomation by spiders or scorpions is a public health problem in many parts of the world and is not isolated to the tropics and subtropics. Spiders and scorpions can be unintentionally transported globally, and keeping them as pets is becoming more popular, so envenomation can occur anywhere. Emergency nurses should be prepared to assess and treat patients who present with a bite or sting. This article gives an overview of the signs, symptoms and treatment of envenomation by species of arachnids that are clinically significant to humans.

The need for new antimicrobial agents is becoming one of the most urgent requirements in modern medicine. The venoms of many different species are rich sources of biologically active components and various therapeutic agents have been characterized including antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Due to their potent activity, low resistance rates and unique mode of action, AMPs have recently received much attention. This review focuses on AMPs from the venoms of scorpions and examines all classes of AMPs found to date. It gives details of their biological activities with reference to peptide structure

Scorpion envenomation is caused by an accidental scorpion sting. In its severe form, it involves life-threatening respiratory or cardiac damage; it may also cause the neurological severity of systemic manifestations. We report the case of a young 35-year-old woman stung by an Androctonus mauretanicus scorpion, who developed impaired consciousness, hemiplegia and respiratory distress. At admission, the brain computed tomography showed a hypodense area in the right parietal region; the chest radiograph revealed a bilateral alveolar syndrome. Troponin was elevated and hemostasis disorders were pr

The oncoproteins MDM2 and MDMX negatively regulate the activity and stability of the tumor suppressor protein p53 and are important molecular targets for anticancer therapy. Grafting four residues of p53 critical for MDM2/MDMX binding to the N-terminal alpha-helix of BmBKTx1, a scorpion toxin isolated from the venom of the Asian scorpion Buthus martensi Karsch, converts the miniature protein into an effective inhibitor of p53 interactions with MDM2 and MDMX. Additional mutations enable the 27-residue miniprotein inhibitor to traverse the cell membrane and selectively kill tumor cells in a p53

Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus; MBT) produces lethal stings and is a matter of concern in certain parts of India. MBT envenomation produces multi-systemic involvement, thus presents difficulty in the management. Symptomatic treatment has been practiced earlier that failed to relieve the toxic effects of the venom. Therefore, present manuscript deals with pathophysiologically based approach in the management of toxicity considering the merits and the demerits of treatment protocols so as to evolve a consensus in the treatment strategies of scorpion envenomation.

In southern Africa there are 130 species of scorpions and only a few species' venom have been investigated to date. This review gives an overview of the research done on the venom of southern African scorpions and the toxins and peptides identified up to date. It also aims to highlight the enormous potential that lies in this field of research. Southern African scorpion toxins include four long-chain Na(+)-channel toxins, four short-chain alpha-K(+)-channel toxins (alpha-KTx), three Ca(2+)-channel toxins and also an insect-selective peptide active on K(+) and Cl(-) channels. Three antimicrobia

Although scorpion bite is usually lethal in children under 6, sometimes it might cause death for those over 6. Acute lethal systemic seizures (cardiovascular and central nervous systems) have been frequently reported from the countryside of developing countries. Numerous researchers have suggested quite different approaches to the treatment of scorpion bites. In this report, we describe a case brought to the emergency service after the patient had been bitten by a scorpion and had significant sympathetic nervous system symptoms. The patient was treated with prazosin successfully.
