Cholesterol sulfate alleviates functional dyspepsia in juvenile mice via modulating the gut microbiota-derived lactate.

The overall global pooled prevalence of functional dyspepsia (FD) was 8.4 %, affecting 3-27 % of children. Currently, no specific medication exists for FD, especially in pediatric cases. Cholesterol sulfate (CHS), a bioactive compound derived from sea cucumber, shows potential in protecting the gastrointestinal tract, but its effects on pediatric FD remain unknown. This study assessed the pharmacological effects of CHS using a juvenile mice model of FD induced by repeated low-dose cisplatin. Results indicated that CHS significantly enhanced gastrointestinal motility and alleviated inflammation

Docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phospholipids and eicosapentaenoic acid-enriched phospholipids inhibit tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced lipolysis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by activating sirtuin 1 pathways.

Some chronic diseases such as cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) and obesity are associated with the overproduction of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) that stimulates excess lipolysis in adipocytes. Our previous studies have shown that docosahexaenoic acid-enriched phospholipids (DHA-PL) and eicosapentaenoic acid-enriched phospholipids (EPA-PL) ameliorated CAC and obesity-related metabolic disorders. To identify the molecular mechanisms involved, we examined the impact and the associated signaling pathways of DHA-PL and EPA-PL on TNF-α-induced lipolysis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The present resu

Assessment of the therapeutic efficacy of Holothuria polii extract during the muscular phase of Trichinella spiralis infection in albino mice.

Marine invertebrates are an important source of bioactive natural products with potential therapeutic applications, owing to their chemically diverse defense mechanisms. Trichinellosis is a widespread food-borne zoonosis caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis). Albendazole (ABZ) is the main treatment, but its efficacy against encysted and newborn larvae is limited. This limitation, together with emerging resistance, has prompted the search for safer alternative antiparasitic agents, particularly natural compounds. Holothuria polii (H. polii) is a bioactive-rich sea cucumber with promising

Spatial patterns of microplastic contamination, Batophora occidentalis invasion, and physiological responses of Holothuria tubulosa from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon.

Microplastic (MP) pollution and biological invasions are major stressors in coastal marine ecosystems, yet the ecological and physiological responses associated with their co-occurrence remain poorly understood. This study assessed the potential relationship between MP contamination, the presence of the invasive macroalga Batophora occidentalis, and the physiological state of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa in S'Estany des Peix lagoon (Formentera, western Mediterranean). MPs were measured in sediment, water, and tissues (intestines and gills), while oxidative stress and detoxification bio

Seafood Paramyosins as Sources of Anti-Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme and Anti-Dipeptidyl-Peptidase Peptides after Gastrointestinal Digestion: A Cheminformatic Investigation.

Paramyosins, muscle proteins occurring exclusively in invertebrates, are abundant in seafoods. The potential of seafood paramyosins (SP) as sources of anti-angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) and anti-dipeptidyl-peptidase (DPP-IV) peptides is underexplored. This in silico study investigated the release of anti-ACE and anti-DPP-IV peptides from SP after gastrointestinal (GI) digestion. We focused on SP of the common octopus, Humboldt squid, Japanese abalone, Japanese scallop, Mediterranean mussel, Pacific oyster, sea cucumber, and Whiteleg shrimp. SP protein sequences were digested on BIOPEP-UW

Frondoside A Enhances the Anti-Cancer Effects of Oxaliplatin and 5-Fluorouracil on Colon Cancer Cells.

Over recent years, we have demonstrated that Frondoside A, a triterpenoid glycoside isolated from an Atlantic sea cucumber, has potent in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer effects against human pancreatic, breast, and lung cancer. We have also demonstrated that Frondoside A is able to potentiate and/or synergize the anti-cancer effects of major classical cytotoxic agents, namely, gemcitabine, paclitaxel, and cisplatin, in the treatment of pancreatic, breast, and lung cancer, respectively. This study evaluates the impact of Frondoside A alone and in combination with the standard cytotoxic drugs oxa

Smart Actuators and Adhesives for Reconfigurable Matter.

Biological systems found in nature provide excellent stimuli-responsive functions. The camouflage adaptation of cephalopods (octopus, cuttlefish), rapid stiffness change of sea cucumbers, opening of pine cones in response to humidity, and rapid closure of Venus flytraps upon insect touch are some examples of nature's smart systems. Although current technologies are still premature to mimic these sophisticated structures and functions in smart biological systems, recent work on stimuli-responsive programmable matter has shown great progress. Stimuli-responsive materials based on hydrogels, resp

Metabolic reprogramming in cancer and senescence.

The rising trend in global cancer incidence has caused widespread concern, one of the main reasons being the aging of the global population. Statistical data show that cancer incidence and mortality rates show a clear upward trend with age. Although there is a commonality between dysregulated nutrient sensing, which is one of the main features of aging, and metabolic reprogramming of tumor cells, the specific regulatory relationship is not clear. This manuscript intends to comprehensively analyze the relationship between senescence and tumor metabolic reprogramming; as well as reveal the impac
