Serum and liver selenium levels were studied during the pathogenesis of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) induced hepatic fibrosis in rats. The degree of fibrosis was assessed with Masson's trichrome staining and quantifying collagen content in the liver. Lipid peroxides were measured in blood and liver samples and total glutathione and glutathione peroxidase were assayed in the liver tissue to evaluate oxidative stress. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) were measured in the serum. Selenium levels were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP

Selenium deficiency has been considered to increase the risk of gestational complications. Our previous work showed that maternal selenium deficiency suppressed proliferation, induced autophagy dysfunction, and apoptosis in the placenta of mice. However, other effects of maternal selenium deficiency on the placenta and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, dietary selenium deficiency in dams significantly suppressed glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the placentae, confirming the

AIM: The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between alcohol, selenium and oxidative stress in breastfeeding rat pups exposed to ethanol during gestation and lactation. We have also studied how a Se-supplemented diet among mothers could prevent different oxidative liver disorders in the pups.
METHOD: Pups of 21 days were randomized into four groups: control group (C), alcohol group (A), alcohol selenium group (AS) and control selenium group (CS). Alcohol was supplied to their mothers for 13 weeks (induction, reproduction, gestation and lactation periods). The selenium-supplemented

Selenium is a critical trace element, with deficiency associated with numerous diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Selenomethionine (SeMet; a selenium analogue of the amino acid methionine, Met) is a major form of organic selenium and an important dietary source of selenium for selenoprotein synthesis in vivo. As selenium compounds can be readily oxidized and reduced, and selenocysteine residues play a critical role in the catalytic activity of the key protective enzymes glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, we investigated the ability of SeMet (and its

Selenium plays a vital role in cancer prevention, antioxidation, and the growth of humans and other vertebrates. Excessive selenium can cause liver injury and metabolic disorders, which can lead to hepatic disease, but few studies have shown the effects of excessive selenium on liver development and its mechanism in zebrafish embryos. In this study, liver development and glucolipid metabolism were investigated in selenium-stressed zebrafish embryos. Under selenium treatment, transgenic fabp10a-eGFP zebrafish embryos showed reduced liver size, and wild-type zebrafish embryos exhibited steatosis

1. Environmental toxicology emphasizes the difference from traditional toxicology in which pure compounds of interest are added to purified diets, or injected into the test animals. When the objective is to study the fate and effects of trace elements in the environment, knowledge of the speciation of the elements and their physico-chemical forms is important. 2. Cadmium salts such as the sulfides, carbonates or oxides, are practically insoluble in water. However, these can be converted to water-soluble salts in nature under the influence of oxygen and acids. Chronic exposure to Cd is associat

Use of selenium enriched foods, supplements and fertilizers has increased markedly in recent years in the US and other Western countries because of the perception that the anti-oxidant properties of selenium could potentially reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. However, concern has been raised recently about possible adverse cardiometabolic effects of high selenium exposure, including an increased risk of diabetes and hyperlipidemia with high selenium intake. Hence, from a public health perspective, the relationship between selenium status and cardiometabolic health should be

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy represents a state of increased oxidative stress and antioxidants, in which selenium (Se) plays a pivotal role, contribute to maintain the oxidative balance. If antioxidant defenses are depleted, placental function is disrupted, resulting in pregnancy complications, including pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). Little is known about fetal selenium status in concomitant relation to maternal PIH, gestational age (GA) and birthweight (BW).
METHODS: We examined over a 3-year period the serum (SeS) and urine selenium (SeU) status in term neonates from normotensive (nonPIH)

Inadequate serum selenium levels may delay the growth and physiological changes in bone metabolism. In humans, reduced serum selenium concentrations are associated with both increased bone turnover and reduced bone mineral density. Moreover, a reduced nutritional intake of selenium may lead to an increased risk of bone disease. Therefore, selenium is an essential nutrient playing a role in bone health, probably due to specific selenium-proteins. Some selenium-proteins have an antioxidation enzymatic activity and participate in maintaining the redox cellular balance, regulating inflammation and

Curcumin, the primary active ingredient from turmeric's rhizome, and selenium, a vital human element, have received significant scientific attention in medical research. The combination of curcumin and selenium has been considered an emerging approach to preventing and treating diseases due to their ability to reduce oxidative stress, regulate inflammation, and enhance the immune system. The use of nanotechnology, especially in the form of curcumin-selenium nanoparticles (CurSeNPs), has provided a novel solution to overcome the limitations of the use of curcumin and selenium, such as the low b

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant regulating the activity of the glutathione peroxidase enzymes, which catalyse the detoxification of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides. Selenium deficiency has been implicated in the aetiopathogeny of Keshan disease, an endemic cardiomyopathy observed in China, and in other cases of congestive cardiomyopathy in subjects on artificial nutrition. However, the evidence from case-control and prospective studies for an association between low selenium status and cardiovascular diseases remains controversial. Mechanisms whereby selenium protects against s

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the world, lacking specific pharmacological interventions or well-established treatments. MASLD involves intricate pathological mechanisms characterized by oxidative stress and robust inflammatory responses. Selenium, an essential trace element, plays a critical role in antioxidation, regulation of inflammation, anticancer activity, and so on. Recent studies have reported that supplementation with selenium could alleviate MASLD and associated hepatic disorders, while excessive cons

For the trace element selenium, in contrast to zinc, iron, copper, chromium, manganese and iodine, there is still no clear official recommendation with regard to routine substitution in artificial nutrition. An overview of the manifestations of selenium deficiency in humans during the period 1979-1995 shows that nutritive deficiencies are exclusively TPN-induced or the result of severe malnutrition. The pathology of TPN-induced selenium deficiency and the analytic assessment of selenium status are described. Patients undergoing long-term parenteral nutrition or suffering from an increased loss

As an essential nutrient and trace element, selenium is required for living organisms and its beneficial roles in human health have been well recognized. The role of selenium is mainly played through selenoproteins synthesized by the selenium metabolic system. Selenoproteins have a wide range of cellular functions including regulation of selenium transport, thyroid hormones, immunity, and redox homeostasis. Selenium deficiency contributes to various diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, liver disease, and arthropathy-Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and osteoarthritis (OA). A skeletal dev

Using the dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced mammary tumor model in rats, our studies indicated that there was a dose-response relationship between dietary selenium supplementation and the inhibition of mammary carcinogenesis. The degree of inhibition was proportional to the level of dietary selenium up to 5 ppm, at which point toxicity in the form of a reduction in weight gain was evident. Moreover, it was observed that the chemopreventive efficacy of selenium was influenced by the dose of carcinogen as well as the fat intake of the animals. By supplementing selenium for defined periods of tim

Contagious ecthyma is a contagious zoonotic disease caused by the Orf virus that can infect farm animals and humans, but no vaccine is available for pregnant mothers. Excessive oxidative stress during pregnancy can suppress the vaccine immune response in pregnant mothers; hence, maternal micronutrient supplementation could effectively improve the immune response, health, and oxidative status during pregnancy. In this study, we employed an 8-week-old pregnant rat model to receive a single intramuscular dose of 200 µg of ORF DNA vaccine with or without vitamin E and selenium supplementation to e

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between oxidative stress (OS) and Kashin-Beck disease (KBD).
METHODS: Terms associated with "KBD" and "OS" were searched in the six different databases up to October 2021. Stata 14.0 was used to pool the means and standard deviations using random-effect or fixed-effect model. The differentially expressed genes in the articular chondrocytes of KBD were identified, the OS related genes were identified by blasting with the GeneCards. The KEGG pathway and gene ontology enrichment analysis was conducted using STRING.
RESULTS: The pooled SMD and 95% CI showed

Metabolically active gasotransmitters (nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide) are important signalling molecules that show therapeutic utility in oxidative pathologies. The reduced form of selenium, hydrogen selenide (HSe-/H2Se), shares some characteristics with these molecules. The simple selenide salt, sodium hydroselenide (NaHSe) showed significant metabolic activity, dose-dependently decreasing ex vivo O2 consumption (rat soleus muscle, liver) and transiently inhibiting mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase (liver, heart). Pharmacological manipulation of selenoprotein expression

Tin-selenium binary compounds are important semiconductors that have attracted much interest for thermoelectric and photovoltaic applications. As tin has a +2 or +4 oxidation state and selenium has an oxidation number of -2, only SnSe and SnSe_{2} have been observed. In this work, we show that the chemical bonding between tin and selenium becomes counterintuitive under pressures. Combining evolutionary algorithms and density functional theory, a novel cubic tin-selenium compound with an unexpected stoichiometry 3∶4 has been predicted and further synthesized in laser-heated diamond anvil cell e

Oxygen derived free radicals, generated by a number of cellular reactions, include superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. They exert their cytotoxic effects mainly via peroxidation of the cell membrane resulting in the loss of membrane integrity. The essential trace element, selenium exerts complex effects on the endocrine systems, partly due to its antioxidant capacity. Well-characterized selenoproteins include iodothyronine deiodinases, glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases involved in thyroid hormone metabolism and protection from oxidative damage. The value
