FMRI of shared-stream priming of lexical identification by object semantics along the ventral visual processing stream.

Distributed sub-systems of the brain's semantic network have been shown to process semantics associated with visual features of objects (e.g., shape, colour) in the ventral visual processing stream, whereas semantics associated with actions are processed in the dorsal stream. Orthographic lexical processing has also been shown to occur in the ventral stream. Past research from our lab (Neudorf et al., 2019) has demonstrated a temporal (i.e., reaction time) priming advantage for object primes over action primes in the lexical decision task consistent with ventral shared-stream processing of vis

Tinnitus affects the relative roles of semantics and prosody in the perception of emotions in spoken language.

Objective: Understanding communication difficulties related to tinnitus, by identifying tinnitus-related differences in the perception of spoken emotions, focussing on the roles of semantics (words), prosody (tone of speech) and their interaction.Study sample and design: Twenty-two people-with-tinnitus (PwT) and 24 people-without-tinnitus (PnT) listened to spoken sentences made of different combinations of four discrete emotions (anger, happiness, sadness, neutral) presented in the prosody and semantics (Test for Rating Emotions in Speech). In separate blocks, listeners were asked to attend to

Women's Experience of Orgasm During Intercourse: Question Semantics Affect Women's Reports and Men's Estimates of Orgasm Occurrence.

Most women report reliably experiencing orgasm from masturbation, but a smaller proportion of women report regularly experiencing orgasm from intercourse. Research suggests that concurrent clitoral stimulation during intercourse increases the likelihood of orgasm, yet most surveys of orgasm during intercourse leave unspecified whether vaginal intercourse does or does not include concurrent clitoral stimulation (assisted intercourse or unassisted intercourse, respectively). Using an online sample of 1569 men and 1478 women, we tested whether phrasing of questions about the occurrence of orgasm

Semantics is crucial for the right-hemisphere involvement in metaphor processing: evidence from mouth asymmetry during speaking.

Research on the neural basis of metaphor provides contradicting evidence about the role of right and left hemispheres. We used the mouth-opening asymmetry technique to investigate the relative involvement of the two hemispheres whilst right-handed healthy male participants explained the meaning of English phrases. This technique is based on the contralateral cortical control of the facial musculature and reflects the relative hemispheric involvement during different cognitive tasks. In particular, right-handers show a right-sided mouth asymmetry (right side of the mouth opens wider than the le

Do individuals with Williams syndrome have bizarre semantics? Evidence for lexical organization using an on-line task.

Williams syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, has attracted a great deal of debate concerning the purported intactness of language in the face of other serious cognitive deficits. As more in-depth studies of specific aspects of WS language have emerged, the notion of a preserved language module has been seriously challenged. Although WS vocabulary scores are often impressive, several investigators have claimed the WS semantics are aberrant. All studies hitherto have been based on off-line experiments which necessarily involve metalinguistic processes. This clearly affects the performance o

Lexical-semantic processing of action verbs and non-action nouns in Persian speakers: Behavioral evidence from the semantic similarity judgment task.

The processing of sensory-motor aspect of word's meaning, and its difference between nouns and verbs, is the main topic of neurolinguistic research. The present study aimed to examine the lexical-semantic processing of Persian non-action nouns and action verbs. The possible effects of semantic correlates on noun/verb dissociation were evaluated without morphological confound. A total of 62 neurologically intact Persian speakers responded to a computerized semantic similarity judgment task, including 34 triplets of non-action nouns and 34 triplets of action verbs by pressing a key. Response Tim

SEMANTICS AND DYNAMICS OF HEADACHE IN PATIENTS WITH CHIARI MALFORMATION TYPE I AFTER DECOMPRESSION SURGERY: EXPERIENCE FROM AZERBAIJAN.

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformation type I (CMI) is a congenital anomaly characterized by the descent of the cerebellar tonsils into the foramen magnum (FM), leading to cerebrospinal fluid circulation disturbances at the level of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF) and the craniovertebral junction (CVJ). Headache (HA) is the predominant symptom, often mimicking primary cephalalgias, complicating diagnosis and optimal surgical strategy selection. AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyze the characteristics of headache in CMI, identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of typical (tHA) and atypical headaches (

White matter networks dissociate semantic control from semantic knowledge representations: Evidence from voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping.

Although semantic system is composed of two distinctive processes (i.e., semantic knowledge and semantic control), it remains unknown in which way these two processes dissociate from each other. Investigating the white matter neuroanatomy underlying these processes helps improve understanding of this question. To address this issue, we recruited brain-damaged patients with semantic dementia (SD) and semantic aphasia (SA), who had selective predominant deficits in semantic knowledge and semantic control, respectively. We built regression models to identify the white matter network associated wi

The Effect of Orthographic Neighbourhood and Semantics on Lexical Processing in a Transparent Orthographic Language: A Pupilometry Study.

A word's neighborhood comprises orthographically similar words, yet neighborhood effects in transparent orthographies remain theoretically underspecified. We investigated how lexical status and orthographic distance modulate cognitive effort using pupil dilation during silent reading. Pupillary responses from thirty-four adults were analyzed using a combination of Linear Mixed-Effects models and Generalized Additive Mixed Models across real words (RWs), low-distance pseudowords (PWs), and high-distance nonwords (NWs). Results revealed a temporal hierarchy and a double dissociation between lexi

Preoperative prediction of CNS WHO grade and tumour aggressiveness in intracranial meningioma based on radiomics and structured semantics.

Preoperative identification of intracranial meningiomas with aggressive behaviour may help in choosing the optimal treatment strategy. Radiomics is emerging as a powerful diagnostic tool with potential applications in patient risk stratification. In this study, we aimed to compare the predictive value of conventional, semantic based and radiomic analyses to determine CNS WHO grade and early tumour relapse in intracranial meningiomas. We performed a single-centre retrospective analysis of intracranial meningiomas operated between 2007 and 2018. Recurrence within 5 years after Simpson Grade I-II

Effects of the semantic context on the processing of careful and casual speech.

Listeners need contextual information to recognize the highly reduced word pronunciation variants that frequently occur in casual speech. Especially, semantically related words preceding them may be informative. It is unclear, however, whether listeners also benefit from preceding semantically related words when these are reduced as well, which is typically the case in casual speech. The present study reports two experiments examining how semantic priming modulates the semantic and phonological processing of target words in both carefully and casually articulated sentences. In a word repetitio

Impaired semantic word learning in primary progressive aphasia.

The neuropsychological and linguistic impairments in individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) have been largely studied. However, the integrity of word learning ability in different PPA variants remains unexplored, despite its prominent role in language therapy. In this study, we investigated the novel word learning ability of 20 individuals with PPA (non-fluent variant: nfvPPA n = 11; logopenic variant: lvPPA n = 9) - as compared to 23 neurotypical controls (NC). Specifically, we used a contextual word learning task that required participants to discover the meaning of 48 new words

Learnable Object Queries for Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation.

Few-shot semantic segmentation (FSS) aims to segment unseen-category objects given only a few annotated samples. Although significant progress has been made in the field of FSS, selecting an appropriate feature matching method remains a challenge. Traditional prototype-based methods can preserve high-level semantic features, but they tend to lose detailed information. On the other hand, pixel-level comparison methods retain fine-grained details but are vulnerable to distractors and noise, leading to poor robustness. To address these issues, this paper proposes a target-agnostic object-based me

Verb specificity effects on semantic processing in Parkinson's disease.

Verb specificity is a sensorimotor semantic property reflecting the distinctiveness of motor patterns evoked by action verbs. While action-verb semantics are affected in Parkinson's disease (PD), the role of specificity is underexplored, particularly under different task demands. We investigated action-verb processing in PD, examining whether verb specificity and psycholinguistic properties (word length, frequency, polysemy) modulate performance under relatively shallow versus deeper semantic processing. Twenty PD patients and twenty-nine healthy controls (Brazilian Portuguese speakers) comple

Probing the content of semantic representations in body-selective regions.

Recent advances in neural networks trained on natural language have revealed that category-selective regions encode complex semantics and contextual information of natural scenes in addition to object categories. However, the limited interpretability of embeddings derived from these models complicates the characterization of the aspects of natural scenes that contribute to such semantic representations. Here we addressed this question by developing an analysis of the relationship between object co-occurrence in large-scale natural scene captions and corresponding fMRI responses predicted by ca

Semantic manifold-aware cross-modal similarity learning.

Image-text matching (ITM) methods typically rely on positive-negative sample discrimination to learn cross-modal similarity. However, when similarity computation is primarily built upon sequence-level and linear representations, samples that are semantically similar but differ in underlying structural relations often remain ambiguously separated, resulting in blurred decision boundaries. To address this limitation, we propose a Semantic Manifold-Aware Similarity Learning (SMSL) framework, where the term "semantic manifold" is used in an operational sense to denote a topology-aware organization

Multimodal semantic knowledge of emotion concepts in frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Recent work has delineated the semantic behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD; or right temporal variant of FTD, which is thought to preferentially impair semantic knowledge for emotional concepts. However, this proposed core feature has not yet been empirically validated, and no clinical tool exists to assess it. Establishing reliable markers is essential to clinically differentiate sbvFTD from behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), which is critical given their overlapping behavioral symptoms but divergent underlying pathologies. Furthermore, contrasting sbvFTD with sema

Semantic fluency predicts survival of memory clinic patients.

BACKGROUND: Semantic fluency is commonly assessed in the diagnostic work-up of individuals with suspected cognitive impairment due to neurodegenerative disease. Semantic fluency has a predictive value for survival in clinical AD and in healthy elderly individuals, but it is unknown if this also applies to biomarker-confirmed AD and non-AD memory clinic patients. Potential associations with and added value of imaging biomarkers of amyloid pathology and neurodegeneration have yet to be explored. METHODS: From our clinical registry, we included patients who were assessed at a memory clinic with

Structural neuroanatomy of semantic retrograde memory in older adults.

Studies of brain lesions or volumes indicate that the integrity of medial and lateral temporal lobe structures is important for news event memory accuracy, but the relationship between cortical thickness and news event memory accuracy has not yet been investigated in older adults. In a mixed sample of 70 older adults with variable cognitive abilities but without dementia, we investigated the relationship between cortical volume, hippocampal volume, and cortical thickness with news event recognition memory accuracy across the entire adult lifespan using the Retrograde Memory News Events Test. Semantic lossless encoded image representation for malware classification.

Combining artificial intelligence with static analysis is an effective method for classifying malicious code. Due to the development of anti-analysis techniques, malicious code commonly employs obfuscation methods like packing, which result in garbled assembly code and the loss of original semantics. Consequently, existing pre-trained code language models are rendered ineffective in such scenarios. Current research addresses this issue by converting malicious bytecode into grayscale images and extracting visual features for classification. However, this process truncates the original sequence,
