In this retrospective study, 140 serum samples collected from 85 scrub typhus-negative patients in Kinmen Island in 2000 were tested for antibodies to hantavirus using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a public health problem in Vladivostok city, Russia. From 1997 to 2019, a study of hantaviruses in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), a natural reservoir of Seoul virus (SEOV), and in HFRS patients was conducted. The impact of industrial activities on atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the Sihwa-Banwol complexes, i.e., the largest industrial area in Korea, was investigated. More than 60 VOCs were determined from 850 samples collected from four sites in and around the complexes through a 2-year monitoring campaign from 2005 to 2007. A cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the current prevalence of leptospirosis and hantaviral infections, and the socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors of infected patients, in Kandy, Sri Lanka. A next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based Ezplex HPV NGS kit (SML Genetree, Seoul, Korea) was used for human papillomavirus (HPV) screening. Of 885 cervical swab samples, HPV was detected in 162 samples. High-risk HPVs were detected in 82 samples, and other types of HPV were detected in 13 samples (HPV86, 71, 102, 91, and 114). At the read depth ≥ 500, NGS results exhibited 100 % agreement among repeated tests. HPV NGS results were compared with those of real-time PCR assays, Anyplex HPV28 (Seegene, Seoul, Korea) (n = 383) and Cobas HPV (Roche, Mannheim, Germany) (n = 64); concordances were 92.

PURPOSE: To use fluorophotometry to measure corneal epithelial barrier function after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
SETTING: Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea.
METHODS: Twenty-five eyes of 21 patients (13 women, 8 men) had PRK to correct myopia. Corneal epithelial healing time was measured and corneal epithelial permeability to sodium fluorescein evaluated by fluorophotometry 1, 2, and 3 weeks after surgery.
RESULTS: Epithelial permeability showed a statistically significant increase 1 week after surgery and returned to its preoperative level 1 week later.
