BACKGROUND: At present, there are scarce clinical and basic lab data concerning the risk of acute serotonin toxicity from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) co-administration. The health care community can strongly benefit from efforts to address the high risks associated with serotonin syndrome from this specific drug combination.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to review the risk of serotonin syndrome in adolescents and young adults prescribed with SSRIs and are concurrently using ecstasy.

OBJECTIVE: Serotonin syndrome (SS) is an iatrogenic life-threatening condition caused by serotonergic agents. The treatment for SS involves the administration of a serotonin antagonist (cyproheptadine). However, the dosing schedule for cyproheptadine is not uniform in the literature.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 23 adult patients (>18 years) admitted to the Neurology Department and met the Hunter criteria for SS.
RESULTS: The mean age was 35.2 years, and 52% were female. Ten patients were managed in the intensive care unit (ICU), whereas thirteen patients were admitted to the ward.

SOX1 antibody is an autoimmune antibody, usually associated with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome, paraneoplastic conditions, and encephalitis. This antibody has also been found among psychiatric patients. However, the role of SOX1 antibody in serotonin syndrome has not yet been defined, as a literature search yielded no results. Therefore, the treatment as such has unknown clinical significance. In this case study, we report a patient with SOX1 antibodies and altered mental status out of proportion to serotonin syndrome whose symptoms improved with simultaneous treatment of both conditions.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia affecting 35 million individuals worldwide. Current AD treatments provide only brief symptomatic relief. It is therefore urgent to replace this symptomatic approach with a curative one. Increasing serotonin signaling as well as developing molecules that enhance serotonin concentration in the synaptic cleft have been debated as possible therapeutic strategies to slow the progression of AD. In this Viewpoint, we discuss exciting new insights regarding the modulation of serotonin signaling for AD prevention and therapy.

A late preterm presented with tachypnoea, jitteriness, irritability and low grade fever. Blood gas showed a compensated metabolic acidosis.
