Stray animal populations and public health in the South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions.

Uncontrolled urban growth in South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions involves city dwellers and stray animals (mainly dogs and cats) creating a dense and downgraded environment, in which irregular street garbage collection disposes sufficient food for survival and proliferation of stray animals. Under such conditions serious public health hazards are expected due to the increase of animal bites, the multiplication of insects and rodents vectors of different viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents to which humans are exposed. Traditional national stray animal eradication programs

Cow Behavioural Activities in Extensive Farms: Challenges of Adopting Automatic Monitoring Systems.

Animal welfare is becoming an increasingly important requirement in the livestock sector to improve, and therefore raise, the quality and healthiness of food production. By monitoring the behaviour of the animals, such as feeding, rumination, walking, and lying, it is possible to understand their physical and psychological status. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) tools offer a good solution to assist the farmer in managing the herd, overcoming the limits of human control, and to react early in the case of animal health issues. The purpose of this review is to highlight a key concern that occu

Obiltoxaximab: First Global Approval.

Obiltoxaximab (Anthim(®), ETI-204) is a monoclonal antibody that is being developed by Elusys Therapeutics and the US Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority for the prevention and treatment of inhalational anthrax due to Bacillus anthracis. Obiltoxaximab has been designed to neutralize the free protective antigen of B. anthracis, thereby inhibiting the lethal effects of anthrax toxins. In March 2016, intravenous obiltoxaximab was approved in the USA for the treatment (in combination with appropriate antibacterial drugs) and prophylaxis o

Rabies in Military Personnel: Epidemiology, Clinical Challenges, and Strategies for Prevention and Management.

For deployed military personnel, a single exposure from a rabies-infected animal can become a death sentence. With a case fatality rate approaching 100%, rabies remains a serious, yet insufficiently acknowledged hazard for service members, for whom prevention in operational environments poses unique challenges. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify relevant studies on rabies risk in armed forces personnel. By analysing rabies-related fatalities in the military, this review highlights the operational challenges posed by animal bites during deployment, including underreporting

A retrospective study of rabies in humans in Zimbabwe, between 1992 and 2003.

This study aimed at examining the epidemiological features of rabies in humans in Zimbabwe. The data were taken from internal reports of the department of veterinary technical services at Harare covering the period 1st January 1992-31st December 2003 inclusive. Positive cases were examined in relation to age and sex of the victim, animal vector involved, season, and land-use categories. The majority of the confirmed positive human cases (85.7%) were recorded in communal areas. The 5-19 year age group and males constituted a highly vulnerable group. Over 90% of the cases were due to dog bites w

Understanding breeding preferences among small-scale cattle producers: implications for livestock improvement programmes.

Livestock production provides a pathway for improving livelihoods and reducing poverty in semi-arid tropical regions. However, this contribution has been affected by low livestock productivity. Most livestock programmes have also failed due to, among other things, the inability to understand the dynamics in smallholder breeding preferences. Using data from the sub-humid region in Zimbabwe, this paper sought to provide evidence on smallholder cattle breeding preferences and the implication on livestock improvement programmes. It applies the choice experiment approach to model farmer preferences

Gene flow in a national cross-breeding beef population.

Future progress in genetic improvement and the monitoring of genetic resources in beef cattle requires a detailed understanding of the population under selection. This study examines the gene flow in the UK beef population with an uncommon breeding structure involving interaction between the beef and dairy populations. British Cattle Movement Service records were used as the primary source of information, and these data were triangulated with UK government statistics, other industry information sources and existing literature to build up a profile of the UK beef industry. Estimates were made o

Economic and health burden of brucellosis in Kazakhstan.

Brucellosis is a widespread zoonotic disease considered as an emerging and re-emerging disease with a resulting threat of public health and animal health. Official reports document an animal incidence in Kazakhstan of about 0.6% per year, and the country still registers high number of human cases annually . The main objective of this paper was to evaluate the distribution and economic impact of brucellosis in Kazakhstan. We analysed human disease incidence data obtained from the Government Sanitary & Epidemiological Service with the aim to estimate the burden of disease in terms of disability-

Assessment of knowledge on foot and mouth disease in free zones where vaccination is not practiced in Brazil.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease. Since 2025, WOAH has internationally recognized Brazil as a free zone where vaccination is not practiced. Brazil employs a syndromic system of passive surveillance, where sensitivity depends on identifying clinical signs in susceptible animals. This research evaluates knowledge about FMD in free zones without vaccination. Brazil's official veterinary service attended 1499 cattle herds, and 98.46 % of respondents claimed to know or have heard of FMD. However, 37.69 % correctly recognized all species susceptible to the virus, and

Assessment of the burden of rabies in one health approach control program in Ketapang District Indonesia: Using zDALY.

BACKGROUND: Ketapang District, located in West Kalimantan, is a region where rabies is endemic. The first human death from rabies was reported in 2014 and the problem persists to this day. In response, the government has implemented the one health approach to control rabies since 2017. This study aimed to assess the disease burden of rabies control using zDALY metrics. METHODS: The zoonotic burden for human and animal was measured by developing Zoonotic Disability-Adjusted Life Years (zDALY), which combines DALY and local values of animals and their products, considering animal morbidity and

Horses as a Crucial Part of One Health.

One Health (OH) is a crucial concept, where the interference between humans, animals and the environment matters. This review article focusses on the role of horses in maintaining the health of humans and the environment. Horses' impact on environmental health includes their influence on soil and the biodiversity of animal and plant species. Nevertheless, the effect of horses is not usually linear and several factors like plant-animal coevolutionary history, climate and animal density play significant roles. The long history of the relationship between horses and humans is shaped by the servic

Sociocultural determinants of antimicrobial resistance in Iran: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global public health threat that is highly likely to undermine modern medicine and pose significant risks to health systems and national economies worldwide. As such, its complex nature, as affected by biological, environmental, economic, and sociocultural factors, requires a multidisciplinary approach to its control. Therefore, uncovering the sociocultural drivers of AMR is critical to designing effective interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: This qualitative study included a number of 57 semi-struc

Rabies Outbreak in an Urban, Unmanaged Cat Colony - Maryland, August 2024.

Exposure to a rabid animal is a life-threatening emergency because infection is almost always fatal if rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is not initiated promptly. In August 2024, the Maryland Department of Health was notified that an aggressive feral cat had been captured and euthanized and had subsequently received a positive test result for rabies. The cat was part of a group of approximately 20 local feral cats and kittens that was receiving no, or little, human care (i.e., an unmanaged cat colony). Cecil County (Maryland) Health Department and the Maryland Department of Health coordin

Gait biomechanics: A clinically relevant outcome measure for preclinical research of musculoskeletal trauma.

Traumatic injuries to the musculoskeletal system are the most prevalent of those suffered by United States Military Service members and accounts for two-thirds of initial hospital costs to the Department of Defense. These combat-related wounds often leave survivors with life-long disability and represent a significant impediment to the readiness of the fighting force. There are immense opportunities for the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TE/RM) to address these musculoskeletal injuries through regeneration of damaged tissues as a means to restore limb functionality and

Assessing client needs in community veterinary care: a case study from WisCARES.

As community veterinary clinics expand across the United States, there is a growing recognition that services need to be aligned with the specific needs of clients and their companion animals, which may vary from one community to the next. WisCARES Community Clinic, which has served low-income pet owners in Dane County, Wisconsin for over a decade, conducted a comprehensive needs assessment in the summer of 2024 to re-evaluate the support required by its clientele. Through an interviewer-administered survey of 51 clients, conducted either in person or by phone, the study identified key areas f
