BACKGROUND: Research has linked knee extensor moment and knee shear force to the non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury during the landing motion. However, how these biomechanical performance factors relate to knee translations in vivo is not known as knee translations cannot be obtained with traditional motion capture techniques. The purpose of this study was to combine traditional motion capture with high-speed, biplane fluoroscopy imaging to determine relationships between knee extensor moment and knee shear force profiles with anterior and lateral tibial translations occurring durin

The tensile performance of geocells depends on the mechanical responses of both cell walls and junctions. Three commercial geocells, liquation-welded polypropylene (LW), injection-molded polyester (IM), and ultrasonic-welded high-density polyethylene (UW), were examined through tensile testing, macroscopic observation, and scanning electron microscopy of cell-wall fracture surfaces. Five configurations were used: cell-wall tension, junction-inclusive tension, and junction seam, shear, and split tests. The cell-wall peak strengths of LW, IM, and UW were 143.03 ± 4.43, 185.61 ± 7.96, and 39.42 ±

With aging comes reductions in the quality and size of skeletal muscle. These changes influence the force-generating capacity of skeletal muscle and contribute to movement deficits that accompany aging. Although declines in strength remain a significant barrier to mobility in older adults, the association between age-related changes in muscle structure and function remain unresolved. In this study, we compared age-related differences in (i) muscle volume and architecture, (ii) the quantity and distribution of intramuscular fat, and (iii) muscle shear modulus (an index of stiffness) in the tric

Distributions of landslide size are hypothesized to reflect hillslope strength, and consequently weathering patterns. However, the association of weathering and critical zone architecture with mechanical strength properties of parent rock and soil are poorly-constrained. Here we use three-dimensional stability to analyze 7330 landslides in western Oregon to infer combinations of strength - friction angles and cohesion - through analysis of both failed and reconstructed landslide terrain. Under a range of conditions, our results demonstrate that the failure envelope that relates shear strength

This in vitro study evaluated the influence of chromium content on bond strength and durability between nickel-chromium alloys and an adhesive resin that contained 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride. Three nickel-chromium alloys with different chromium content, as well as pure chromium and pure nickel metals, were bonded and tested for shear strength. After repeated thermocycling, shear bond strength decrease was lower in alloys containing high chromium content. Pure chromium metal demonstrated a 15.2% decrease, whereas pure nickel metal demonstrated the greatest (53.7%) decrease. The

Rotational atherectomy (RA) is widely used for lesion preparation in severely calcified coronary lesions; however, shear-induced platelet activation associated with high-speed rotating burr may contribute to complications such as slow-flow and no-reflow. Therefore, clarifying the distribution and mechanisms of high-shear regions in blood and identifying the dominant regions responsible for shear-induced platelet activation, are important for improving RA procedures. However, these issues have received limited attention in previous studies on RA. In this study, a three-dimensional computational

Brittle bone diseases are a global healthcare problem for orthopaedic clinicians, that reduces bone strength and promotes bone fracture risk. In vivo studies reported that loading-induced fluid flow through the lacunar-canalicular channel (LCS) of bone tissue inhibit such bone loss and encourages osteogenesis i.e. new bone formation. Canalicular fluid flow converts mechanical signals into biological signals and regulates bone reconstruction by releasing signalling molecules responsible for mechanotransduction. In-silico model mostly considers canalicular fluid is Newtonian, however, physiologi

The aim of the present work is to propose a robust computational framework combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and 4D flow MRI to predict the progressive changes in hemodynamics and wall rupture index (RPI) induced by aortic morphological evolutions in patients harboring ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (ATAAs). An analytical equation has been proposed to predict the aneurysm progression based on age, sex, and body surface area. Parameters such as helicity, wall shear stress (WSS), time-averaged WSS, oscillatory shear index, relative residence time, and viscosity were evaluated for

Despite a large number of rear-end collisions on the road and a high frequency of whiplash injuries reported, the mechanism of whiplash injuries is not completely understood. One of the reasons is that the injury is not necessarily accompanied by obvious tissue damage detectable by X-ray or MRI. An extensive series of biomechanics studies, including injury epidemiology, neck kinematics, facet capsule ligament mechanics, injury mechanisms and injury criteria, were undertaken to help elucidate these whiplash injury mechanisms and gain a better understanding of cervical facet pain. These studies

Hemoglobin vesicles (HbV) or liposome-encapsulated Hbs are artificial oxygen carriers that have been developed for use as transfusion alternatives. The extremely high concentration of the HbV suspension (solutes, ca. 16 g/dL; volume fraction, ca. 40 vol %) gives it an oxygen-carrying capacity that is comparable to that of blood. The HbV suspension does not possess a colloid osmotic pressure. Therefore, HbV must be suspended in or co-injected with an aqueous solution of a plasma substitute (water-soluble polymer), which might interact with HbV. This article describes our study of the rheologica

To investigate the mechanical response characteristics of damming rockfill materials under different confining pressure conditions, this study integrates laboratory triaxial compression tests and PFC2D numerical simulations to systematically analyze their deformation evolution and failure mechanisms from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives. Laboratory triaxial test results demonstrate that as the confining pressure increases, the peak deviatoric stress rises significantly, with the shear strength of specimens increasing from 769.43 kPa to 2140.98 kPa. Under low confining pressure, ro

Rock burst events are frequently accompanied by the formation of extensive tensile cracks, with bedding plane dip angles fundamentally determining the tensile strength characteristics, crack propagation, and failure modes of coal measures. This study investigates the influence of bedding plane angles on the tensile mechanical behavior of coal rocks using PFC2D numerical simulations. Models with four distinct bedding angles (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°) were developed to analyze failure mechanisms under tensile loading. The results demonstrate three key findings: (1) both tensile strength and elastic mod

The interfacial strength of secondary osteons from the diaphysis of the Thoroughbred equine third metacarpal was evaluated using the fiber pushout test. The pushout was performed on 300-500 microm sections of 4x4x15 mm bone blocks machined from four anatomic regions of the cortex. Pushout strength was evaluated from proximal to distal location within the diaphysis on four osteon types classified under polarized light on adjacent histologic sections from each block. The shear strength of the interfaces were estimated from shear lag theory. Differences were found in the interfacial strength of o

Existing experimental studies on human balance have primarily focused on biomechanical responses of major lower-limb joints, while the role of hallux and lesser toes of human foot in response to external perturbations has not been fully explored. Although toe grip strength may significantly influence balance performance, a more physiological-relevant toe grip evaluation, has not yet been established. This study investigates the biomechanical grip strength of the hallux and lesser toes during perturbations by quantifying the shear interactions (i.e., horizontal traction forces) at the foot-grou

This research presents the influence of two different cellulose (hydrophobic pretreated/non-pretreated) and one flax-fiber unidirectional nonwoven low areal weight fiber reinforcements on the mechanical properties of urea-formaldehyde bonded five layered beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) plywood as an alternative to commonly used synthetic fiber reinforcements. The results display divergent trends regarding the improvement of the mechanical properties-modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, tensile strength, shear strength, and screw withdrawal resistance. The non-treated cellulose and flax reinfo

Sandblasted surfaces of a beryllium-free, nickel-chromium alloy were bonded with one of three chemical adhesives. After either immersion in water for up to 6 months or thermal cycling between 5 degrees and 60 degrees C for 500 cycles, the bonded specimens were tested for both shear and tensile strength. The highest values of tensile and shear bond strengths were found with Panavia Ex material, and these values showed no significant changes after thermal cycling. For ABC cement and for Super-Bond C & B material, the strength of the bond was significantly improved with thermal cycling. However,

Bilateral cervical facet dislocation (BFD) with facet fracture (Fx) often causes tetraplegia but is rarely recreated experimentally, possibly due to a lack of muscle replication. Intervertebral axial compression (due to muscle activation) or distraction (due to inertial loading), when combined with excessive anterior translation, may influence interfacet contact or separation and the subsequent production of BFD with or without Fx. This paper presents a methodology to produce C6/C7 BFD+Fx using anterior shear motion superimposed with 300 N compression or 2.5 mm distraction. The effect of these

Cartilage fissures, surface fibrillation, and delamination represent early signs of hip osteoarthritis (OA). This damage may be caused by elevated first principal (most tensile) strain and maximum shear stress. The objectives of this study were to use a population of validated finite element (FE) models of normal human hips to evaluate the required mesh for converged predictions of cartilage tensile strain and shear stress, to assess the sensitivity to cartilage constitutive assumptions, and to determine the patterns of transchondral stress and strain that occur during activities of daily livi

Almond shell-modified urea-formaldehyde resins (AUF) were prepared in this study. The optimal addition amount of almond shells was selected by formaldehyde emission and wet shear strength. The activation energy (E a) values at different conversion rates and the reaction kinetics were estimated based on the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method. The results indicated that almond shells can significantly reduce the formaldehyde emission and increase wet shear strength and thermal stability of the urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive. The optimal addition of almond shells is 3 wt %.
