Data on foodborne disease in Canada in 1984 are compared with those for 1983. A total of 1,181 incidents, comprising 1,016 outbreaks and 165 single cases, caused illnesses in 9,953 persons in 1984. These figures are the highest on record with almost double the number of cases occurring in 1983. Salmonella , Staphylococcus aureus , Clostridium perfringens , and Bacillus cereus were responsible for most of the illnesses. The main Salmonella serovars involved were S. typhimurium , S. enteritidis , and S. heidelberg . There were no incidents of parasitic infections or paralytic shellfish poisoning

Manchineel dermatitis, caused by the sap of the manchineel tree native to the coastlands of the Caribbean, West Africa, and Central America, has received limited attention in the literature despite significant morbidity. The toxic sap causes a burning, blistering rash and conjunctivitis, while ingestion of the fruit may lead to oropharyngeal pain, hemodynamic instability, and gastrointestinal distress. Tourists unfamiliar with the manchineel tree may be exposed through exposure to the tree's sap, contaminated rainwater, or ingestion of the apple-like fruit. We herein present a case of a patien

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are natural proliferations of microalgal species, able to produce toxic compounds, such as domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin responsible for the Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) which can be lethal for mammals. Pectinid species are of high economic value and are particularly vulnerable to these events. As filter-feeders, they can accumulate DA and transfer it through the food web. However, DA retention (accumulation and depuration) varies between species, meaning that not all fisheries are equally affected. Therefore, there is a need to better understand species-speci

Ciguatera poisoning is caused by the consumption of reef fish or shellfish that have accumulated ciguatoxins, neurotoxins produced by benthic dinoflagellates of the genera Gambierdiscus or Fukuyoa. Although ciguatera constitutes the primary cause of seafood intoxication in Cuba, very little information is available on the occurrence of ciguatoxins in the marine food web and the causative benthic dinoflagellate species. This study conducted on the south-central coast of Cuba reports the occurrence of Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa genera and the associated benthic genera Ostreopsis and Prorocentrum.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a fisherman who developed chronic mercury poisoning due to excessive consumption of tuna while working on a pelagic fishing vessel.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old male deep-sea fisherman developed paresthesia and pain in both legs while working at sea. He continued working for over 4 months on a pelagic fishing vessel but was eventually unable to function normally as his condition deteriorated. Upon arrival on land, he received specialist treatment, including imaging studies, for 2 months; however, the cause of the symptoms was not identified. An examination of hi

The allocation of resources with respect to food safety issues requires that decision makers prioritize these issues, which may conflict with the public's opinions on these matters. The purpose of this study was to compare how Canadian expert and lay respondents rank different food hazards, with a view to better understanding their underlying rationales for making decisions on food safety. A Carnegie Mellon risk ranking model was adapted for use by individuals with different backgrounds to rank six food safety issues: bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella

Iceland is a major producer of cold water shrimp, Pandalus borealis. In recent years considerable attention has been given to improve hygiene in the factories producing cooked, peeled and frozen shrimp. To keep track of the bacteriological status of the end product, shrimp from most of the factories is routinely analysed bacteriologically by the request of shrimp exporters. This paper reports on the results of a bacteriological analysis of 7913 samples of shrimp from 26 Icelandic factories over a 6-year period. The results showed that the geometric mean of APC (at 35 degrees C) was 1718 per g

The benthic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima is among the most common toxic morphospecies with a cosmopolitan distribution. P. lima can produce polyketide compounds, such as okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxin (DTX) and their analogues, which are responsible for diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Studying the molecular mechanism of DSP toxin biosynthesis is crucial for understanding the environmental driver influencing toxin biosynthesis as well as for better monitoring of marine ecosystems. Commonly, polyketides are produced by polyketide synthases (PKS). However, no gene has been confirmat

Okadaic acid (OA), a main component of diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins, is a strong and specific inhibitor of the serine/threonine protein phosphatases PP1 and PP2A. However, not all of the OA-induced effects can be explained by this phosphatase inhibition, and controversial results on OA are increasing. To provide clues on potential mechanisms of OA other than phosphatase inhibition, here, acute toxicity of OA was evaluated in zebrafish, and changes in gene expression in zebrafish liver tissues upon exposure to OA were observed by microarray. The i.p. ED50 (6 h) of OA on zebrafish

Domoic acid (DA) is an excitatory neurotoxin produced by marine algae and responsible for Amnesiac Shellfish Poisoning in humans. Current regulatory limits (˜0.075-0.1 mg/kg/day) protect against acute toxicity, but recent studies suggest that the chronic consumption of DA below the regulatory limit may produce subtle neurotoxicity in adults, including decrements in memory. As DA-algal blooms are increasing in both severity and frequency, we sought to better understand the effects of chronic DA exposure on reproductive and neurobehavioral endpoints in a preclinical nonhuman primate model. Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) is a globally significant human health syndrome most commonly caused by dinoflagellates within the genus Dinophysis. While blooms of harmful algae have frequently been linked to excessive nutrient loading, Dinophysis is a mixotrophic alga whose growth is typically associated with prey availability. Consequently, field studies of Dinophysis and nutrients have been rare. Here, the temporal dynamics of Dinophysis acuminata blooms, DSP toxins, and nutrients (nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, silicate, organic compounds) were examined over four years within two New

The diatom species Pseudo-nitzschia australis can produce domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin- responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning. Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are essential trace metals for marine phytoplankton, but they can become either limiting or toxic at pico- to subnanomolar ionic concentrations-levels that are can be reached in coastal ecosystems. The effect of exposure to these metals on DA production remains unclear for Cu and is largely unknown for Zn. In this study, we investigated the effects of toxic picomolar concentrations of Cu²⁺ and four non-limiting concentrations of Zn²⁺ o

Pinnatoxin G (PnTx-G) is a marine cyclic imine toxin produced by the dinoflagellate Vulcanodiniumrugosum, frequently detected in edible shellfish from Ingril Lagoon (France). As other pinnatoxins, to date, no human poisonings ascribed to consumption of PnTx-G contaminated seafood have been reported, despite its potent antagonism at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and its high and fast-acting toxicity after intraperitoneal or oral administration in mice. The hazard characterization of PnTx-G by oral exposure is limited to a single acute toxicity study recording lethality and clinical signs in

Monitoring of okadaic acid (OA)-group toxins in seafood is of paramount importance for the protection of consumer health from diarrheic shellfish poisoning. The property of OA-group compounds to inhibit type 2A serine/threonine phosphoprotein phosphatase (PP2A) has been exploited for the detection of OA in several experimental settings, but the performance of PP2A inhibition assays in the quantification of mixtures of OA-group compounds has not been reported yet. We have used a PP2A inhibition assay to analyze the total effect of mixtures including OA and one of its analogues, okadaol (OOH), b

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), exacerbated by climate change and environmental disturbances, pose global challenges due to marine toxin contamination, particularly diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs). DSTs are prevalent marine toxins, and understanding their synthesis is vital for managing fisheries and mitigating environmental triggers. This study delves into the synthesis mechanisms of DSTs in Prorocentrum arenarium and Prorocentrum lima, which vary in toxin types and concentrations. We conducted a comprehensive comparative transcriptomic analysis to identify potential toxin-related genes, focu

Domoic acid (DA) is a neurotoxin produced by diatoms from the genera Pseudo-nitzschia and Nitzschia. DA is transferred through the food web when consumed by organisms such as copepods (e.g., Acartia tonsa). DA bioaccumulates in higher trophic levels and poses a threat to human health through amnesic shellfish poisoning. Laboratory experiments using a DA reference standard demonstrated that mild turbulence facilitates formation of organic polymer aggregates >0.6 µm in-vivo that can scavenge dissolved DA (dDA). Using A. tonsa, we demonstrate that DA can be assimilated through consumption of thes

Eutrophication has played a major role in the worldwide increase of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Higher input of key nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), can stimulate the growth of harmful algal species in freshwater, estuarine, and coastal marine ecosystems. Some HAB-forming taxa, particularly several cyanobacteria and dinoflagellate species, are harmful through the production of N-rich toxins that have detrimental effects on the environment and human health. Here, we test how changes in nutrient availability affect N-rich toxin synthesis in cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates u

Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) is found naturally in coastal saltwater. In the United States, Vp causes an estimated 35,000 domestically acquired foodborne infections annually, of which most are attributable to consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish. Illness typically consists of mild to moderate gastroenteritis, although severe infection can occur. Demographic, clinical, and exposure information (including traceback information on implicated seafood) for all laboratory-confirmed illnesses are reported by state health departments to CDC through the Cholera and Other Vibrio Surveillance syst

Eight cases of acute gastroenteritis caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus in humans are described; to our knowledge, they are the first such reported cases in Spain. All cases appeared between August 20th and October 15th, with a frequency of 8.3% regarding the overall adult patients with acute gastroenteritis, and 11.5% regarding the overall patients with positive stool culture for any enteropathogenic organism. The eight strains were Kanagawa positive and in three patients other enteropathogenic organisms were isolated in addition to Vibrio parahaemolyticus, i.e. Aeromonas hydrophila in two and
