Gene expression reveals the pancreas of Aselli as a critical organ for plasma cell differentiation in the Eurasian common shrew.

BACKGROUND: Almost all mammals rely on the thymus and bone marrow to generate and differentiate B and T cells essential for adaptive immunity. A few members of the family Soricidae, or true shrews within Eulipotyphla, have also evolved an enlarged pancreas of Aselli, a kidney-sized organ hypothesized to serve this primary immune role, and whose gene expression profile is unknown. RESULTS: Here we introduce transcriptomes of juvenile Eurasian common shrews (Sorex araneus, family Soricidae) pancreas of Aselli. We compare these to those of the shrew spleen and chick bursa of Fabricius, an analog

Visible-Light Optical Coherence Tomography Fibergraphy of the Tree Shrew Retinal Ganglion Cell Axon Bundles.

We seek to develop techniques for high-resolution imaging of the tree shrew retina for visualizing and parameterizing retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon bundles in vivo. We applied visible-light optical coherence tomography fibergraphy (vis-OCTF) and temporal speckle averaging (TSA) to visualize individual RGC axon bundles in the tree shrew retina. For the first time, we quantified individual RGC bundle width, height, and cross-sectional area and applied vis-OCT angiography (vis-OCTA) to visualize the retinal microvasculature in tree shrews. Throughout the retina, as the distance from the optic

Deficiency of primate-specific SSX1 induced asthenoteratozoospermia in infertile men and cynomolgus monkey and tree shrew models.

Primate-specific genes (PSGs) tend to be expressed in the brain and testis. This phenomenon is consistent with brain evolution in primates but is seemingly contradictory to the similarity of spermatogenesis among mammals. Here, using whole-exome sequencing, we identified deleterious variants of X-linked SSX1 in six unrelated men with asthenoteratozoospermia. SSX1 is a PSG expressed predominantly in the testis, and the SSX family evolutionarily expanded independently in rodents and primates. As the mouse model could not be used for studying SSX1, we used a non-human primate model and tree shrew

Dive Performance and Aquatic Thermoregulation of the World's Smallest Mammalian Diver, the American Water Shrew (Sorex palustris).

Allometry predicts that the 12-17-g American water shrew (Sorex palustris)-the world's smallest mammalian diver-will have the highest diving metabolic rate coupled with the lowest total body oxygen storage capacity, skeletal muscle buffering capacity, and glycolytic potential of any endothermic diver. Consistent with expectations, and potentially owing to their low thermal inertia, water shrews had a significantly higher diving metabolic rate in 10°C water (8.77 mL O2 g-1 h-1) compared with 30°C water (6.57 mL O2 g-1 h-1). Unlike larger-bodied divers, muscle myoglobin contributed minimally (7.

Experimental myopia increases and scleral crosslinking using genipin inhibits cyclic softening in the tree shrew sclera.

PURPOSE: Myopia progression is thought to involve biomechanical weakening of the sclera, which leads to irreversible deformations and axial elongation of the eye. Scleral crosslinking has been proposed as a potential treatment option for myopia control by strengthening the mechanically weakened sclera. The biomechanical mechanism by which the sclera weakens during myopia and strengthens after crosslinking is not fully understood. Here, we assess the effect of lens-induced myopia and exogenous crosslinking using genipin on the inelastic mechanical properties of the tree shrew sclera measured by

The proximal gastric corpus is the most responsive site of motilin-induced contractions in the stomach of the Asian house shrew.

The migrating motor complex (MMC) is responsible for emptying the stomach during the interdigestive period, in preparation for the next meal. It is known that gastric phase III of MMC starts from the proximal stomach and propagates the contraction downwards. We hypothesized that a certain region of the stomach must be more responsive to motilin than others, and that motilin-induced strong gastric contractions propagate from that site. Stomachs of the Suncus or Asian house shrew, a small insectivorous mammal, were dissected and the fundus, proximal corpus, distal corpus, and antrum were examine

Vocal development during postnatal growth and ear morphology in a shrew that generates seismic vibrations, Diplomesodon pulchellum.

The ability of adult and subadult piebald shrews (Diplomesodon pulchellum) to produce 160Hz seismic waves is potentially reflected in their vocal ontogeny and ear morphology. In this study, the ontogeny of call variables and body traits was examined in 11 litters of piebald shrews, in two-day intervals from birth to 22 days (subadult), and ear structure was investigated in two specimens using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Across ages, the call fundamental frequency (f0) was stable in squeaks and clicks and increased steadily in screeches, representing an unusual, non-descending ontogen

Identification of novel Bartonella spp. in bats and evidence of Asian gray shrew as a new potential reservoir of Bartonella.

Many studies indicated that small mammals are important reservoirs for Bartonella species. Using molecular methods, several studies have documented that bats could harbor Bartonella. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship of Bartonella spp. identified in bats and small mammals living in the same ecological environment. During May 2009 and March 2010, a total of 102 blood specimens were collected. By whole blood culture and molecular identification, a total of 6 bats, 1 rodent and 9 shrews were shown to be infected by Bartonella species. After sequencing and phylogenetic analy

The evaluation of whole-body plethysmography as a semiautomated method for analysis of emesis in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

We analyzed the cisplatin-induced emetic responses of Suncus murinus by observation of both videorecorded behavior and changes in peak expiratory flow (PEF) as monitored by whole-body plethysmography. Analysis of the PEF data by use of a macro program revealed emesis-related changes in PEF. Cisplatin dose-response curves obtained by both methods showed similar emesis profiles. In addition, our PEF-based analytical method could be used to assess emesis changes induced by various other emetogens (veratrine hydrochloride, nicotine bitartrate, and copper sulfate) and confirmed the efficacy of the

Blarina toxin, a mammalian lethal venom from the short-tailed shrew Blarina brevicauda: Isolation and characterization.

Venomous mammals are rare, and their venoms have not been characterized. We have purified and characterized the blarina toxin (BLTX), a lethal mammalian venom with a tissue kallikrein-like activity from the submaxillary and sublingual glands of the short-tailed shrew Blarina brevicauda. Mice administered BLTX i.p. developed irregular respiration, paralysis, and convulsions before dying. Based on the amino acid sequence of purified protein, we cloned the BLTX cDNA. It consists of a prosequence and an active form of 253 aa with a typical catalytic triad of serine proteases, with a high identity

Testicular microvascularization in the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) as revealed by vascular corrosion cast/SEM and by TEM.

Testicular angioarchitecture in lower primates has not been established and the route of androgens from Leydig cells entering the systemic circulation is still a matter of controversy. In the present study, the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) was used as the model for vascular corrosion cast/SEM and conventional TEM studies. With vascular corrosion cast/SEM, it was revealed that while coursing in the spermatic cord, the testicular artery convoluted and gave off branches to supply the epididymis, the coverings of the spermatic cord and the pampiniform plexus. Upon approaching the testis, it enc

Isolation and characterization of Helicobacter species from the stomach of the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) with chronic gastritis.

A Gram-negative, motile bacterium with bipolar sheathed flagella (one at each end) was isolated from the stomach of house musk shrews (Suncus murinus) with chronic gastritis. The isolates grew at 37 degrees C under microaerophilic conditions, but not under aerobic conditions; rapidly hydrolyzed urea; were catalase, oxidase, alkaline phosphatase, and arginine aminopeptidase positive; reduced nitrate to nitrite; and were resistant to cephalothin and nalidixic acid, but sensitive to tetracycline, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol. This bacterium was found on gastric epithelial cells by electron m

The 'hybrid' character of the gametes and reproductive tracts of the African shrew, Myosorex varius, supports its classification in the Crocidosoricinae.

The Soricidae are generally considered to comprise two subfamilies--Crocidurinae and Soricinae--each of which has distinctive reproductive characteristics. Although Myosorex varius is classified as a crocidurine, the features of its reproductive system call that classification into question. Compared with three other shrew genera, Myosorex exhibited a number of specific features including a relatively prolonged time (about 22 h) for ovulation to be induced by hCG injection and the smallest diameter (75 microns) recorded for any mammal egg. Moreover, the relative testis mass and the number of e

Novel sperm crypts and behavior of gametes in the fallopian tube of the white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula monacha.

The gametes of an insectivore, the white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula monacha, present certain idiosyncratic features not seen in most other eutherian mammals. The spermatozoa display an acrosome of giant proportions, and are produced in relatively small numbers. In trans-illuminated oviducts examined with DIC optics, spermatozoa were first sequestered in languid clutches within the isthmus in deep narrow crypts, with some eventually ingested by the crypt epithelium. Then, at ovulation (ca. 15 hr after hCG), many ascended to occupy "bubble-like" ciliated crypts distributed randomly within

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) infection in synanthropic small mammals (rodents and shrews) in Northeastern India: Zoonotic and One Health implications.

Rapid urbanization has increased overlap between human and synanthropic rodent habitats. This intensifies human-animal-environment interactions and facilitates the emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases, highlighting the importance of the "One Health" concept. Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a neglected zoonotic parasite where rodents serve as the principal reservoirs. Human infections are often asymptomatic, but they can also cause liver failure and death in severe cases, with definitive diagnosis requiring liver biopsy. This study was conducted in Meghalaya, Northea

Chewing shrews: Examining the morphology and function of the masticatory musculature in Soricidae via diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography.

Essential for sustaining a high metabolic rate is the efficient fragmentation of food, which is determined by molar morphology and the movement of the jaw. The latter is related to the jaw morphology and the arrangement of the masticatory muscles. Soricid jaw apparatuses are unique among mammals, as the articulation facet on the condylar process is separated into a dorsal and a ventral part, which has often been linked to more differentiated jaw motions. Soricidae also possess a remarkably elongated angular process. However, the precise function of the unique morphology of soricid jaw apparatu
