Experimental autoallergic sialadenitis (EAS) is an autoimmune mononuclear cell infiltration of the submandibular salivary gland that results in tissue destruction and glandular dysfunction. A previous report has described an animal model of induced EAS in LEW rats following sensitization with allogeneic WF submandibular gland (SMG). The present study extends this observation to an EAS disease model induced following sensitization of LEW rats with syngeneic LEW SMG. Furthermore, we describe the characterization of the mononuclear cells in the glandular infiltrates, evaluate the production of au

Background: Lymphoepithelial sialadenitis (LESA) is a chronic lymphoid-rich inflammatory disorder of the salivary glands that is strongly associated with Sjögren's disease and may overlap clinically, radiologically, and histopathologically with IgG4-related sialadenitis, HIV-associated lymphoepithelial lesions, chronic sialadenitis, salivary gland tumors, and extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma). Objective: This scoping review mapped current evidence on diagnostic challenges, differential diagnostic criteria, management strategies, and s

OBJECTIVE: During facial rejuvenation procedures, the salivary glands and their ducts are susceptible to injury. Given the paucity of data on obstructive salivary gland complications after facial rejuvenation procedures, this study aimed to characterize their clinical features and assess the outcomes of endoscopic management.
METHODS: A tertiary salivary gland clinic database was retrospectively reviewed for patients who presented with obstructive sialadenitis involving the parotid and submandibular glands following facial rejuvenation procedures and were treated with sialendoscopy. Demograph

A 74-year-old man was referred for a plastic surgery consultation for two previous acute episodes of right submandibular sialadenitis. Physical examination revealed a lump in the right submandibular region, painful on palpation. The initial impression on clinical examination was of sialolithiasis. The sonography demonstrated a structural heterogeneity of the submandibular gland with a hypoechogenic and vascularised nodular formation (1.5×1.2 cm), suggestive of a mixed tumour of the right maxillary gland, requiring histological evaluation. He underwent a right submandibulectomy and an IgG4-posi

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibition with anti-PD(L)1 and anti-CTLA4 antibodies has significantly changed cancer treatment during the last 10 years. Nevertheless, boosting the immune system with immune checkpoint inhibition can result in immune-related adverse events, affecting different organ systems, among which the endocrine system is the most affected. However, there are few descriptions of the association of immune-related adverse events, and the pathophysiology of some is still lacking. Here, we report a 70-year-old Caucasian patient treated with nivolumab (anti-PD1 monoclonal antibo

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the ultrasonographic features of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis (IgG4-DS) and their usefulness in clinical diagnostic sessions.
METHODS: By re-evaluating 96 consecutive patients with IgG4-related disease, we identified 54 patients (male:female = 37:17; median age, 69.5 years) who underwent lacrimal or submandibular gland (LG or SG, respectively) ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Their clinical and ultrasonographic features were retrospectively analysed. Radio-pathological correlations were also examined in LG (23 cases) and

Xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis (XGS) is rare in salivary glands and only reported in the literature as single cases. Here we report a cohort of four cases with XGS and summarize the clinicopathologic features of these cases. All four patients had persistent mass lesions concerning for neoplasm. In two patients (patient 1 and 3), the initial fine needle aspirations (FNAs) contained oncocytic cells consistent with or suspicious for Warthin's tumor, but follow-up FNAs showed only inflammation and/or debris indicating tumor infarction after FNA. All patients eventually had surgical resection. Hi

Aims We report a case of bilateral neonatal suppurative sialadenitis (NSS) in an extremely low birth weight infant (ELBW). Methods The infant developed bilateral sub-mandibular swelling at 3 weeks of age. NSS with abscess was confirmed with ultrasound. Despite intravenous antibiotic therapy the masses increased in size and developed abscesses. Results Unilaterally the abscess discharged via Wharton’s duct necessitating intubation to protect the airway. The abscess remnant was incised and drained. Culture grew a methicillin sensitive staphyloccocus aureus. The NSS resolved following two weeks o

AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate different irrigation solutions during sialendoscopy to reduce complaints caused by sialodochitis.
METHODS: The investigators designed and implemented a retrospective study composed of 94 patients with sialodochitis but no sialolithiasis or relevant stenosis of the salivary duct system. Three different irrigations (normal saline, cortisone single-shot, and cortisone) were used. After the sialendoscopy, the patients were asked about the current status of the affected salivary gland, and the quantity and quality of the gland swelling/inflammation over a

OBJECTIVES: Patients with immunoglobulin-G4 related disease (IgG4-RD) diagnosed according to the comprehensive diagnostic criteria (CDC) show varied therapeutic responses and prognoses. We assumed that there are clinical stages in IgG4-RD and have verified it using serum cytokine levels in the groups classified by lesion distribution.
METHODS: Definite IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis (IgG4-DS) cases were divided according to the CDC for IgG4-RD into 11 cases with focal type and 30 cases with systemic type. The levels of serum interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-13, IL-15, I

PURPOSE: Sialolithiasis is the most common cause of chronic sialadenitis. In this case report, intraoperative finding of an accessory submandibular duct, obstructed with stone, originating from the same gland nearby the main Warthon's duct, is presented.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old male patient, suffering from eating-related pain and swelling in his left submandibular region, was diagnosed with left sublandibular gland sialadenitis with radiologically manifested sialolithiasis, and gland excision was advised. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia. When the full anatomical scenery was

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) has a critical role in the control of sodium balance, blood volume, blood pressure and viscosity of extracellular water. In submandibular gland disease, viscosity of the saliva plays an important role in the pathophysiology. However, there has been little study into the relationship between expression of ENaC and obstructive sialadenitis. The aim of this study was to elucidate the ENaC expression in excretory duct obstruction of the submandibular gland.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven-week old male Sprague-Dawley 12 rats were enroll

Lichen planus (LP) is the most prevalent dermatological disorder with oral manifestation. Oral lesions comprise a broad spectrum of clinical presentations. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented erosive LP on the buccal and lower lip mucosae. Besides typical erosions, small white keratotic papules on an erythematosus background on the lower lip mucosa were observed. Biopsy of lower lip lesions showed an unusual histopathological presentation consisting of a lichenoid inflammation targeted to salivary gland ducts. This is probably a salivary gland analog of lichen planopilaris
