The attentional blink reveals sluggish attentional shifting in adolescents with specific language impairment.

Rapid processing deficits have been the subject of much debate in the literature on specific language impairment (SLI). Hari and Renvall (2001) [Hari, R. & Renvall, H. (2001). Impaired processing of rapid stimulus sequences in dyslexia. Trends in cognitive sciences, 5, 525-532.] proposed that the source of this deficit can be attributed to sluggish attentional shifting abilities. That is, more time is required to shift attention between stimuli. To test this claim, 26 adolescents with SLI (divided into two subgroups to control for differences in non-verbal intelligence) and 14 controls were pr

Associated Factors of Depressive Expression in Social Media During Emergencies: An LLM-Based Analysis.

Emergencies not only affect economic development and social stability but also pose serious challenges to the physical and mental health of the public. Depression is one of the most common chronic mental disorders following such events. However, few studies have explored the factors associated with depressive expression during emergencies. This research focuses on three core dimensions: cognitive appraisal, emotional response, and individual traits. It examines how perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, anxiety, sadness, self-focused attention and psychological resilience are associated

Novel multi-modal methodology to investigate placebo response in major depressive disorder.

The neurobiological mechanisms underlying the placebo phenomenon in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) remain largely unknown. The progressive rise in rates of placebo responses within clinical trials over the past two decades may impede the detection of a true signal and thus present a major obstacle in new treatment development. Understanding the mechanisms would have several important implications, including (1) identifying biomarkers of placebo responders (thereby identifying those individuals who could benefit therapeutically from such interventions), (2) opening new avenues fo

Understanding the Role of Systemic Inflammation in Alzheimer's Disease.

Human and animal studies suggest that inflammation occurring outside the central nervous system (systemic inflammation) may play a key role in promoting neurodegeneration, Alzheimer's disease pathology, and cognitive decline in older adults. Systemic inflammation, which is marked by increased blood levels of circulating proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, may occur as a result of events such as infection, chronic disease, and physical and psychological stress, but may also occur outside the context of these conditions as a result of subclinical processes such as cellular senescence. [Acoustic and optical perceptual disorders in depressive diseases--an overview of results from experimental studies].

This literature review concentrates on a disregarded part of depressive disorders' symptomatology (especially concerning present-day classifications of mental disorders) that can be approached with a great number of experimental procedures. From the acoustical field the following findings are demonstrated and discussed: elevated click thresholds in auditory signal detection, changed ear asymmetry in dichotic click detection and differences in dichotic listening asymmetries according to symptomatology. The most important results from the so far investigated optical perceptual disturbances in de

Chronic psychological stress promotes breast cancer pre-metastatic niche formation by mobilizing splenic MDSCs via TAM/CXCL1 signaling.

BACKGROUND: Emerging studies have identified chronic psychological stress as an independent risk factor influencing breast cancer growth and metastasis. However, the effects of chronic psychological stress on pre-metastatic niche (PMN) formation and the underlying immunological mechanisms remain largely unknown. METHODS: The effects and molecular mechanisms of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) on modulating tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and PMN formation were clarified by multiplex immunofluorescence technique, cytokine array, chromatin immunoprecipitation, the dual-luciferase re

Theory of mind and emotional functioning in fibromyalgia syndrome: an investigation of the relationship between social cognition and executive function.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome primarily characterised by chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain. In the aetiology of this syndrome a crucial role is played by complex interactions among biological, genetic, psychological, and socio-cultural factors. Recently, researchers have started to explore emotional functioning in FM, with their attention focused on alexithymia, a personality construct that affects the regulation of a person's own emotions. On the other hand, the detection and experience of emotional signals from other people have only been sparsely investigated in FM synd

Implicit auditory sensory memory and short-term memory for musical and verbal stimuli in children with cochlear implants.

The spectrally degraded signal delivered by cochlear implants (CIs) has been suggested to constrain the encoding and temporary retention of sequential auditory information. However, research on short-term memory (STM) in children with CIs has predominantly focused on the verbal domain, with musical STM and implicit auditory sensory memory receiving comparatively limited attention. This study investigated the domain-specific nature of auditory STM in children with CIs relative to typically hearing (TH) peers, alongside implicit auditory sensory memory and music perception. Seventy-five children

Effects of noise overexposure on tone detection in noise in nonhuman primates.

This report explores the consequences of acoustic overexposures on hearing in noisy environments for two macaque monkeys trained to perform a reaction time detection task using a Go/No-Go lever release paradigm. Behavioral and non-invasive physiological assessments were obtained before and after narrowband noise exposure. Physiological measurements showed elevated auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and absent distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) post-exposure relative to pre-exposure. Audiograms revealed frequency specific increases in tone detection thresholds, with the

From amusic to musical?--Improving pitch memory in congenital amusia with transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Brain imaging studies highlighted structural differences in congenital amusia, a life-long perceptual disorder that is associated with pitch perception and pitch memory deficits. A functional anomaly characterized by decreased low gamma oscillations (30-40 Hz range) in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during pitch memory has been revealed recently. Thus, the present study investigates whether applying transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at 35 Hz to the right DLPFC would improve pitch memory. Nine amusics took part in two tACS sessions (either 35 Hz or 90 Hz) and

The superior temporal sulcus differentiates communicative and noncommunicative auditory signals.

Processing the vocalizations of conspecifics is critical for adaptive social interaction. A species-specific voice-selective region has been identified in the right STS that responds more strongly to human vocal sounds compared with a variety of nonvocal sounds. However, the STS also activates in response to a wide range of signals used in communication, such as eye gaze, biological motion, and speech. These findings raise the possibility that the voice-selective region of the STS may be especially sensitive to vocal sounds that are communicative, rather than to all human vocal sounds. Using f

Fear-object perception: does it entail the involuntary capture of attention?

The idea that fearful stimuli are automatically detected i.e. without attention, is challenged by the hypothesis that detection of threatening stimuli is facilitated by the involuntary, stimulus-driven recruitment of attentional resources. In order to clarify this question, we studied spiders detection in arachnophobic individuals by means of an iconic version of the Attentional Blink Task (AB). The experiment consisted of two tasks: 1) Probe detection within a rapid sequence of distractors, including a Critical Distractor (CD); 2) Probe detection and identification of the CD (Target). In this

Horizontal-plane localization of noise and speech signals by postlingually deafened adults fitted with bilateral cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of the study was to assess the ability of adults with bilateral cochlear implants to localize noise and speech signals in the horizontal plane. A second objective was to measure the change in localization performance in these adults between approximately 5 and 15 mo after activation. A third objective was to evaluate the relative roles of interaural level difference (ILD) and interaural temporal difference (ITD) cues in localization by these subjects. DESIGN: Twenty-two adults, all postlingually deafened and all bilaterally fitted with MED-EL COMBI 40+ cochlear im

Research progress and clinical application of functional magnetic resonance imaging in otolaryngology-head and neck diseases.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive tool that detects neural activity via BOLD signals. In otolaryngology-head and neck disorders, such as tinnitus, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, vestibular migraine, and olfactory dysfunction, fMRI reveals disease-specific neural pathophysiology, altered functional connectivity, and compensatory brain reorganization. It aids diagnosis and differential diagnosis by distinguishing abnormal regional activity patterns, predicts individual prognosis through connectivity-based biomarkers, monitors treatment response, and informs devel

Biomusic: An Auditory Interface for Detecting Physiological Indicators of Anxiety in Children.

For children with profound disabilities affecting communication, it can be extremely challenging to identify salient emotions such as anxiety. If left unmanaged, anxiety can lead to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other psychological diagnoses. Physiological signals of the autonomic nervous system are indicative of anxiety, but can be difficult to interpret for non-specialist caregivers. This paper evaluates an auditory interface for intuitive detection of anxiety from physiological signals. The interface, called "Biomusic," maps physiological signals to music (i.e., electrodermal ac

Exploring risk signals of association between drugs and suicide: a retrospective investigation from 2004 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a serious public health issue associated with the interaction of biological, psychological and social factors. Although relevant studies are relatively mature, research on the association between drugs and suicide remains limited and lacks systematic analysis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the potential association signals between drugs and suicide-related adverse events (SAEs) using the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: This study collected data from the FAERS database spanning the first quarter of 200

Cerebral oscillatory activity during simulated driving using MEG.

We aimed to examine cerebral oscillatory differences associated with psychological processes during simulated car driving. We recorded neuromagnetic signals in 14 healthy volunteers using magnetoencephalography (MEG) during simulated driving. MEG data were analyzed using synthetic aperture magnetometry to detect the spatial distribution of cerebral oscillations. Group effects between subjects were analyzed statistically using a non-parametric permutation test. Oscillatory differences were calculated by comparison between "passive viewing" and "active driving." "Passive viewing" was the baselin

Brain distribution of geissoschizine methyl ether in rats using mass spectrometry imaging analysis.

Geissoschizine methyl ether (GM) is one of the main active ingredients responsible for ameliorating the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in Kampo medicine yokukansan. GM is mainly metabolized into hydroxylated forms (HM-1/2). However, the brain distributions of GM and HM has not been reported in vivo. In this study, therefore, the plasma concentrations and brain distribution of these compounds were examined in vivo using rats injected intravenously with GM. Plasma concentrations were analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis and brain distri

Unreliable evoked responses in autism.

Autism has been described as a disorder of general neural processing, but the particular processing characteristics that might be abnormal in autism have mostly remained obscure. Here, we present evidence of one such characteristic: poor evoked response reliability. We compared cortical response amplitude and reliability (consistency across trials) in visual, auditory, and somatosensory cortices of high-functioning individuals with autism and controls. Mean response amplitudes were statistically indistinguishable across groups, yet trial-by-trial response reliability was significantly weaker i

Pre-surgery Stress Monitoring Using Heart Rate Variability Measures.

Pre-surgery stress is common in patients hospitalized for undergoing surgeries. High levels of stress could prolong post-operative recovery time, increasing the duration of hospitalization. Abnormally high stress levels could sometimes have irreversible impacts, leading to post-operative physiological and psychological disorders. Continuous monitoring of patients during the pre-operative period could help in taking necessary measures to control the stress levels. Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the signals which is usually monitored continuously for patients in clinical settings. The usabili
