Studies have reported that patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) exhibit varying outcomes in sleep quality and duration, influenced by psychological factors, but few studies have investigated their mediating effects. Therefore, this study aimed to examine how psychological factors, particularly perceived stress, affect the sleep duration of patients with AD. Data from the fourth to seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2007 to 2018 were analyzed, including 64,942 Korean adults aged ≥ 19 years, excluding those without data on AD or sleep duration. Objective A short sleep duration is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the causal relationship between a short sleep duration and the onset of NAFLD remains unknown because of the lack of any longitudinal studies. Therefore, we evaluated the association between sleep duration and the onset of NAFLD. Methods We evaluated health checkup data for 1,862 NAFLD-free Japanese adults aged 33-86 years at baseline and followed those individuals for a median of 41 months. Hepatic steatosis was examined using ultrasonography (US). The Cox proportional hazards model was use

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with an increased risk of diabetes in adulthood. However, the potential mediational role of sleep duration in this association is unclear. A total of 116, 014 participants in the United States, from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey in 2020 were involved in the study. The effects of ACE status, different ACEs, and ACE scores on short sleep duration were examined using binary logistic regression analysis, and the association of ACE status, different types of ACEs, and ACE scores with diabetes and the mediating role

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep, including short sleep duration, is common among caregivers of persons with dementia. However, it is unclear whether poor sleep is consistent across both self-reported and objective measures of sleep in caregivers. This study aimed to test the role of caregiving status (caregivers vs noncaregivers) on the discrepancy between self-reported and objective sleep duration.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Study participants were community-dwelling caregivers of spouses with dementia (n = 122) and noncaregivers (n = 53). A sleep duration discrepancy index was

BACKGROUND: Researchers have proposed that impaired sleep may be a causal link in the progression from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Several recent findings suggest that enhancing deep sleep (N3) may improve neurological health in persons with MCI, and buffer the risk for AD. Specifically, Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) of frontal brain areas, the inferred source of the Slow Oscillations (SOs) of N3 sleep, can extend N3 sleep duration and improve declarative memory for recently learned information. Recent work in our laboratory using dense array Electr

BACKGROUND: Sailors in the U.S. Navy are habitual shiftworkers, often experiencing circadian misalignment due to their irregular work/rest schedules. This study assessed the effect of sunlight exposure, work hours, and caffeinated beverage consumption on the daily sleep duration of crewmembers of a U.S. Navy ship during a 2-wk underway period.
METHODS: Working in an artificially lit area with no access to sunlight during work hours, U.S. Navy crew members (N = 91) used daily logs to report their daily activity, caffeinated beverage consumption, and exposure to sunlight while off-duty; sleep w

BACKGROUND: An association between sleep duration and a wide spectrum of diseases has been reported, but little is known about its relationship with bone mineral density (BMD). Previously conducted studies in Korea and abroad have reported results that are controversial. The present study sought to assess whether sleep duration can be considered an independent risk factor of osteoporosis.
METHODS: We included participants over the age of 60 years with data on self-reported habitual sleep duration and BMD measured with dual X-ray absorptiometry. Comprehensive data on the study sample was obtai

Several strands of research indicate that work competes for time with sleep, but to what extent the timing and duration of sleep is affected by work is not known. Retirement offers a quasi-experimental life transition to study this in a within-individual study design. The few existing studies report that people sleep longer and later after retirement but mainly rely on self-reported data or between-individual analyses. We recruited 100 participants aged 61-72 years who were in paid work but would soon retire and measured them in a baseline week with accelerometers, diaries and questionnaires.

BACKGROUND: Both sleep duration and sleep quality are related to future health, but their combined effects on mortality are unsettled. We aimed to examine the individual and joint effects of sleep duration and sleep disturbances on cause-specific mortality in a large prospective cohort study.
METHODS: We included 9,098 men and women free of pre-existing disease from the Whitehall II study, UK. Sleep measures were self-reported at baseline (1985-1988). Participants were followed until 2010 in a nationwide death register for total and cause-specific (cardiovascular disease, cancer and other) mo
