[Insomnia and lifestyle-related diseases].

As both insomnia and lifestyle-related diseases are associated with a variety of underlying factors, they have been considered to occur as a complication of each other. Moreover, evidence has been presented in recent studies that they are closely related to each other as risks of development and exacerbation. As unhealthy lifestyle-habits have long been recognized to increase the risks of lifestyle-related diseases and their worsening, it is natural that sleep, which takes up one third of a person's life, is markedly associated with disorders such as hypertension and diabetes. It is important

Restless Legs Syndrome in Adult Primary Care.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) or Willis‑Ekbom Disease is a sensorimotor condition marked by an irresistible need to move the legs, typically accompanied by uncomfortable sensations that peak during periods of rest and disrupt nightly sleep. Early identification in primary care is essential, as timely intervention can dramatically improve the patient's quality of life. Diagnosis relies on a focused clinical history, guided by targeted questions that explore symptom timing, triggers, and relief measures. Management begins with non‑pharmacological strategies, such as optimizing sleep hygiene and c

[Circadian rhythm disruption and human development].

Ontogenetic developments of rest-activity, sleep-wakefulness, temperature and several hormone rhythms in humans were reviewed. The reported effects of environment on these alterations were also summarized. Then, disorders or conditions which often encounter during early stage of life and reveal circadian rhythm disruptions were described. These disorders or conditions included severe brain damage, visual disturbance, developmental disorders(autistic spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder), Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Smith-Magenis syndrome, epilepsy, Yonaki, and i

A clinical approach to circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

Circadian rhythm sleep disorders are characterized by complaints of insomnia and excessive sleepiness that are primarily due to alterations in the internal circadian timing system or a misalignment between the timing of sleep and the 24-h social and physical environment. In addition to physiological and environmental factors, maladaptive behaviors often play an important role in the development of many of the circadian rhythm sleep disorders. This review will focus on the clinical approach to the diagnosis and management of the various circadian rhythm sleep disorders, including delayed sleep

Sleep and sleep disorders in people with Parkinson's disease.

Sleep disorders are common in people with Parkinson's disease. These disorders, which increase in frequency throughout the course of the neurodegenerative disease and impair quality of life, include insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, circadian disorders, obstructive sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder. The causes of these sleep disorders are complex and multifactorial, including the degeneration of the neural structures that modulate sleep, the detrimental effect of some medications on sleep, the parkinsonian symptoms that interfere

Sleepiness or excessive daytime somnolence.

Excessive daytime somnolence (EDS) is associated with age-related changes, environment, circadian rhythm or sleep pattern disorder, insomnia, medications, lifestyle factors, depression, pain, and illness. The notion of "sleep architecture" connotes a structure that describes the sleep cycle (i.e., stages) and wakefulness during a single sleep period-that is, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. Circadian rhythms perform a variety of functions including regulation of the quality and distribution of the stages of sleep. Insomnia includes delayed sleep onset as well as premature wakening;

Evaluation of the sleepy crewmember: USAFSAM experience and a suggested clinical approach.

From 1958 to 1986, 27 crewmembers with suspected sleep disorders were referred to the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. The presenting complaint in most cases was excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Prior to 1984, evaluations included neurologic and psychiatric testing, screening laboratory studies, and awake and asleep electroencephalography. Polysomnography and sleep latency studies were included after 1984. In the majority of cases, the etiology of the complaint could not be determined. The prevalence of EDS is estimated to be between 0.3% and 4.0% of the adult population. Major causes cit

Sleep and Cardiometabolic Health: Integration Into Internal Medicine Practice.

Sleep is a critical and often underestimated determinant of cardiometabolic health, influencing neuroendocrine, inflammatory, and metabolic pathways. Sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. This article aims to review the main pathophysiological mechanisms linking sleep to cardiometabolic disease, summarize the most recent clinical evidence, and propose intervention strategies applicable to Internal Medicine practice. We conducted a narrative review of literature published between 2015

Effects of Digital Sleep Interventions on Sleep Among College Students and Young Adults: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: College students and young adults (18-25 years) frequently experience poor sleep quality, with insomnia being particularly prevalent among this population. Given the widespread use of digital devices in the modern world, electronic device-based sleep interventions present a promising solution for improving sleep outcomes. However, their effects in this population remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to synthesize current evidence on the effectiveness of electronic device-based sleep interventions in enhancing sleep outcomes among college students and young adults. METHODS: I

Delayed sleep-wake rhythm due to staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic and sleep debt after returning to campus among Japanese nursing university students: A longitudinal study.

This study aimed to investigate sleep problems during staying at home due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and after returning to campus among university nursing students. We analyzed data from self-reported sleep surveys conducted during a nursing course at a university in Tokyo between 2019 and 2021. During staying at home due to COVID-19, we observed delayed sleep-wake rhythm, prolonged sleep duration on weekdays, a decreased sleep debt, improved daytime sleepiness, and worsened insomnia, especially in terms of difficulty initiating sleep (Study 1; 18 paired data). After

[Sleep disorders in childhood].

Sleep disorders in childhood are frequent and usually harmless. They rarely point to a serious disease. Difficulty in falling asleep and nightly awakenings are age-dependent and transitory. While the largely harmless somnambulism and pavor nocturnus occur in the deep sleep of the first third of the night, the anxiety dreams of REM sleep appear preferentially in the second half of the night. Other disorders such as nocturnal enuresis and talking in sleep may occur during the whole night. It is very important to inform the parents because this helps to counter fears and false expectations. Consi

Association between adverse perinatal outcomes and sleep disturbances during pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to physiological and hormonal factors, sleep disturbances are prevalent in the obstetric population. Multiple studies have evaluated the relationship between sleep disturbances and perinatal outcomes, with inconsistent results. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to further assess the overall relationship between four types of sleep disturbances (snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, extreme sleep duration, and poor sleep quality) and adverse perinatal outcomes. METHODS: We performed electronic searches in PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP, an
