Subjective and Objective Measurement of Sleep Quality and Activity in Glaucoma.

PRCIS: Glaucoma patients exhibit worse indices of sleep function by both objective and subjective metrics compared with controls. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to characterize the sleep parameters and physical activity levels of glaucoma patients compared with controls. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 102 patients with a diagnosis of glaucoma in at least 1 eye and 31 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) during enrollment and then wore wrist actigraphs for 7 consecutive days to characterize circadian rhythm, sle

Factors Associated With Sleep Quality in Hospitalized Persons With Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Factors associated with sleep quality have not been well examined in hospitalized older persons with dementia, who are at high risk for impaired sleep. The aim was to identify factors associated with sleep quality among hospitalized persons with dementia. METHODS: This secondary analysis used baseline data from a cluster randomized trial. Factors examined included delirium severity, pain, depression, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and daytime physical activity. Multiple stepwise linear regressions evaluated factors related to dimensions of sleep quality

Possible effects of uberization on the quality of sleep of professional drivers.

Uber and other on-demand business platforms drivers experience unparalleled flexibility in work hours, and many are using this model instead of working a fixed-hours job. The option of working more hours a day and, as a result, increasing the remuneration received is often chosen by drivers even at the expense of sleep. Due to their professional obligation, this population is at risk of excessive sleepiness due to sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality, increasing the risk of detrimental effects on health and the risk of car accidents. Considering that sleep is essential for general health, i

Effect of Dexmedetomidine on Postoperative Sleep Quality: A Systematic Review.

In this article, we conduct a systematic review of the literature to explore the specific role of dexmedetomidine (DEX) on postoperative sleep and its associated mechanisms at present. The electronic database Embase, MEDLINE/PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched. The restriction terms included "dexmedetomidine", "sleep" and "surgery". The inclusion criteria were as following: 1) patients 18 years old or older; 2) DEX used in the perioperative period not just for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU); 3) prospective or retrospective st

Music on Prescription to Aid Sleep Quality: A Literature Review.

Research on the efficacy of music for improving sleep quality has produced mixed results. We investigated whether the number of music dosages could be a reason for the lack of clarity. Six longitudinal music sleep studies using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) over 3 weeks were identified. Music when compared to active (audiobooks or medication) or passive controls significantly improved (improvement is reflected by a lower score) PSQI within the first or second week of prescription. The improvement was an average mean difference of -1.15 (SD = 0.53) for each week. Music dosages conti

The Impact of Nasal Obstruction and Functional Septorhinoplasty on Sleep Quality.

Importance: Functional septorhinoplasty (FSRP) has been shown to improve both global and disease-specific quality of life (QOL). However, the mechanism by which FSRP improves QOL has not been fully defined. We reasoned that NAO may impact sleep quality and, therefore, studied the relationship using validated patient-reported outcome measures. Objective: To investigate the correlation between NAO and sleep quality using Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) and Functional Outcomes of Sleep Quality (FOSQ-10) questionnaires, and to evaluate the effect of FSRP on NAO and sleep quality. Influence of Dietary Sources of Melatonin on Sleep Quality: A Review.

Sleep is an essential biological phenomenon, being a physiological and behavioral process necessary for quality of life. Melatonin is a circadian hormone produced at night by the pineal gland, regulated by the light/dark cycle, under the control of the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Melatonin is an indoleamine, synthesized from the essential amino acid tryptophan via serotonin. Melatonin is also found in plants, where it helps fight oxidative stress. To present a systematic review on the ability of food sources of melatonin to promote healthy sleep. A literature search was performed on the PubMed, S

Mindfulness is associated with sleep quality among patients with fibromyalgia.

AIM: Previous studies suggest higher mindfulness may be associated with better sleep quality in people with chronic pain conditions. However, the relationship between mindfulness and sleep in fibromyalgia patients, who commonly suffer from sleep problems, remains unstudied. We examined the relationship between mindfulness and sleep, and how this relationship may be mediated by depression, anxiety, and pain interference in fibromyalgia patients. METHOD: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a randomized trial in fibromyalgia patients. We measured mindfulness (Five Facet

The Impact of Living Arrangements on Dementia Caregivers' Sleep Quality.

In the United States half of the 15 million informal caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia (PWDs) do not live with the PWD. This paper compares the sleep quality and health of 59 community-dwelling caregivers living with the PWD and 21 living apart from the PWD. Variables of interest were caregiving experience (hours caregiving, problematic behaviors of the PWD, caregivers' perception of dementia severity), sleep quality, and health (perceived health, stress, and depressive symptoms). Parametric unpaired t tests were used to calculate the differences between key

Nasal polyposis in France: impact on sleep and quality of life.

The prevalence of nasal polyposis (NP) in France (2.11 per cent) and its epidemiology (detection, medical management, patients' characteristics, risk factors, associated diseases, etc.) were determined in a population-based, cross-sectional, case-control study of 10 033 adults carried out in 2002. The impact of this disease on daily living was also studied, by the analysis of potential sleep disorders (validated questionnaire) and quality of life (QOL, SF-36 questionnaire) of NP patients, in a comparison with a matched-control group of individuals without NP. A quarter of NP patients (24.6 per

Evaluation of the stability and quality of sleep using Hjorth's descriptors.

Hjorth's descriptors (NSD) (activity, mobility, and complexity) provide a useful tool for evaluating micro- and macrostructural elements of sleep. In rats, the automatic analysis of sleep recordings by means of NSD calculated from SM and Vis derivations allow different sleep stages to be discriminated. Activity distribution over the total recording permits the definition of a global effect on the EEG. Moreover, the quality of sleep can be evaluated by the variations of the SM activity distribution by considering different classes of amplitude. Index and rate of unstable amplitude segments (UAS

Sex-specific changes and age-specific trends in sleep quality and sleep apnea: Analysis of one-million nights of sleep.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep quality and breathing changes with aging. Women report worse subjective sleep-quality while having better objective polysomnographic (PSG) sleep quality, than men. Electroencephalogram (EEG) slow-wave sleep shows marked reductions with age, but non-EEG based sleep quality is relatively well preserved. METHODS: The CPC-based SleepImage® System was used to estimate a sleep quality index (SQI), sleep fragmentation and sleep apnea. Included in the analysis are 1 million nights of clinical home recordings including ≥6-h of duration and ≥4-h of estimated total-sleep time, with g

Objective and subjective socioeconomic gradients exist for sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, weekend oversleep, and daytime sleepiness in adults.

Socioeconomic gradients exist for multiple health outcomes. Lower objective socioeconomic position (SEP), whether measured by income, education, or occupation, is associated with inadequate sleep. Less is known about whether one's perceived ranking of their social status, or subjective SEP, affects sleep. This study examined whether a subjective socioeconomic gradient exists for sleep while controlling for objective SEP. Participants (N = 177; age, M = 45.3 years, SD = 6.3 years) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, MacArthur Ladder, and other self-report mea
