Longitudinal test of a reciprocal model of smoking expectancies and smoking experience in youth.

This article reports on a longitudinal test of a developmental model of early smoking that specifies reciprocal predictive relationships between smoking expectancies and smoking behavior in youth. The model was tested on 1,906 children during the transition from elementary school to middle school across 3 time points: the spring of 5th grade, the fall of 6th grade, and the spring of 6th grade. Key findings were (a) elementary school expectancies for reinforcement from smoking predicted smoking behavior during middle school; (b) smoking experience predicted increased subsequent smoking expectan

The importance of practitioner smoking status: a survey of NHS Stop Smoking Service practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the smoking status of stop smoking practitioners, the impact of this on their practice, and clients' quit rates. METHODS: Smoking cessation practitioners in the UK NHS Stop Smoking Service were asked about their smoking status, client quit rates and practitioner-client interaction, using an online survey. Associations between responses were investigated using logistic regression. RESULTS: 51% of the sample (N=484) were ex-smokers. Most practitioners had been questioned about their smoking status by clients, with more never than ex-smokers claiming that this reduced

Prenatal cigarette smoking: Long-term effects on young adult behavior problems and smoking behavior.

We examined the long-term effects of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (PCSE) on the behavior problems and smoking behavior of 22-year-old offspring. The mothers of these offspring were interviewed about their tobacco and other drug use during pregnancy at the fourth and seventh gestational months, and at delivery. Data on the offspring are from interviews at age 22 (n=608). Behavior problems were measured by the Adult Self-Report (ASR) with the following outcome scales: total behavior problems, externalizing, internalizing, attention, anxiety/depression, withdrawn, thought, intrusive, aggress

The intergenerational transmission of tobacco smoking--the role of parents' long-term smoking trajectories.

Youths whose parents smoke tobacco may be at elevated risk of smoking themselves. However, the association between parental long-term smoking history and offspring regular tobacco use is not well known. Using data collected on 1121 youths (12-26 years) participating in the GAZEL Youth study, a French community-based cohort, we tested the association between parental long-term smoking trajectory and offspring regular smoking. Parental smoking trajectory over 11 years (1989-1999) was measured by yearly reports obtained from the parent. Statistical analyses controlled for youth's sex, age, alcoho

Active smoking, household passive smoking, and breast cancer: evidence from the California Teachers Study.

BACKGROUND: There is great interest in whether exposure to tobacco smoke, a substance containing human carcinogens, may contribute to a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. To date, literature addressing this question has been mixed, and the question has seldom been examined in large prospective study designs. METHODS: In a 1995 baseline survey, 116 544 members of the California Teachers Study (CTS) cohort, with no previous breast cancer diagnosis and living in the state at initial contact, reported their smoking status. From entry into the cohort through 2000, 2005 study participants we

[The End of the Smoking Path: The Aspects of Changing Smoking Habits in Psychiatric Care].

Smoking prevalence is particularly high among individuals with psychiatric disorders, and the low success rate of permanent cessation further exacerbates the situation. However, smoking represents a modifiable risk factor, and addressing it can significantly improve patients' health, quality of life, and life expectancy. This review article explores the most common fears and misconceptions - both from patients and healthcare professionals - that may hinder successful cessation. We examine psychological and pharmacological treatments that support cessation, emphasizing options preferred for psy

Parental Perceptions of Children's Exposure to Tobacco Smoke and Parental Smoking Behaviour.

Around 40% of children are exposed to tobacco smoke, increasing their risk of poor health. Previous research has demonstrated misunderstanding among smoking parents regarding children's exposure. The parental perceptions of exposure (PPE) measure uses visual and textual vignettes to assess awareness of exposure to smoke. The study aimed to determine whether PPE is related to biochemical and reported measures of exposure in children with smoking parents. Families with at least one smoking parent and a child ≤ age 8 were recruited. In total, 82 parents completed the PPE questionnaire, which was

Coaching to create a smoke-free home in a brief secondhand smoke intervention.

Few community interventions exist to reduce secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke in the home. This study presents the coaching process of a larger intervention to promote smoke-free homes across an efficacy and 2 effectiveness trials. It furthers assesses the coaching call's reach and participants' satisfaction with the call across three intervention sites. The sources of the data were from baseline and 3-month follow-up surveys, coaching forms or online tracking system and interviews with coaches. Reach for the coaching call across trials was fairly high from 72% to 92%. Overall, the majority

Time to Smoke: Facilitating Smoking Breaks in Mental Health Inpatient Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of smoking in mental health patients is up to three times higher than in the general population, with the highest rates seen in inpatient settings. In many countries, smoke-free policies in inpatient settings prohibit smoking in buildings but allow supervised smoking breaks. We aimed to estimate staff resources dedicated to such breaks. METHODS: A cross sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of inpatient mental health staff from four hospitals in London, England. Staff were asked about the number of designated supervised smoking breaks and their dura

[Problems of tobacco smoke and positive effects of quit-smoking on human health].

Cigarette smoking dominates among Japanese smokers. A smoker takes a small amount of nicotine into the body by one aspiration of cigarette; this amount is not large enough to cause acute symptoms. The way of consuming one cigarette by about 10 aspirations may supply a sufficient amount of nicotine to the body without producing unpleasant symptoms of acute toxicity. Cigarette is very effective goods of nicotine delivery to increase the nicotine-dependent patients. In addition, owing to the tricky image strategy by a tobacco company, the citizens in Japan have not become sufficiently aware of ha

Smoking rates and the state of smoking interventions for children and adolescents with chronic illness.

Engaging in smoking is particularly risky for children and adolescents with chronic illness whose health status is already compromised because of disease- and treatment-related complications. Yet, some of these youngsters smoke at rates at least comparable to those of their healthy peers. To date, few randomized smoking-prevention and cessation trials have been conducted in children with chronic medical problems. In this review we report on the smoking rates among youngsters with chronic illness, identify specific disease- and treatment-related complications that can be exacerbated by smoking,

Smoking pattern of smokers with and without tobacco-smoke-related lung diseases.

The number of cigarettes smoked, the duration of the smoking habit, and the tar content of the smoke influence the occurrence of tobacco-smoke-related lung diseases, as may also patterns of smoke inhalation. We therefore determined the smoking pattern, especially the time relation between cigarette puff and inhalation, in smokers with and without tobacco-smoke-related lung diseases. On the basis of clinical and radiologic findings as well as pulmonary function tests, 91 smokers were classified as smokers without lung disease, with small airway disease, with simple chronic bronchitis, with obst

No smoke without fire: the impact of cigarette smoking on the immune control of tuberculosis.

Cigarette smoke (CS) exposure is a key risk factor for both active and latent tuberculosis (TB). It is associated with delayed diagnosis, more severe disease progression, unfavourable treatment outcomes and relapse after treatment. Critically, CS exposure is common in heavily populated areas with a high burden of TB, such as China, India and the Russian Federation. It is therefore prudent to evaluate interventions for TB while taking into account the immunological impacts of CS exposure. This review is a mechanistic examination of how CS exposure impairs innate barrier defences, as well as alv

Tobacco Smoking and Second-Hand Smoke Exposure Impact on Tuberculosis in Children.

Little is known about whether second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure affects tuberculosis (TB). Here, we investigate the association of cigarette smoke exposure with active TB and latent TB infection (LTBI) in children, analyzing Interferon-Gamma Release Assays' (IGRAs) performance and cytokine immune responses. A total of 616 children from contact-tracing studies were included and classified regarding their smoking habits [unexposed, SHS, or smokers]. Risk factors for positive IGRAs, LTBI, and active TB were defined. GM-CSF, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, IL-22, IL-17, TNF-α, IL-1RA and IP-10 cyt

Impact of institutional smoking bans on reducing harms and secondhand smoke exposure.

BACKGROUND: Smoking bans or restrictions can assist in eliminating nonsmokers' exposure to the dangers of secondhand smoke and can reduce tobacco consumption amongst smokers themselves. Evidence exists identifying the impact of tobacco control regulations and interventions implemented in general workplaces and at an individual level. However, it is important that we also review the evidence for smoking bans at a meso- or organisational level, to identify their impact on reducing the burden of exposure to tobacco smoke. Our review assesses evidence for meso- or organisational-level tobacco cont
