Fiberoptic evaluation of the nasal and nasopharyngeal anatomy in children with snoring.

In this prospective study, fiberoptic examinations of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx were performed in 162 children with snoring and compared with similar examinations performed in 211 children without snoring. Our study aimed to determine a correlation between snoring and measured parameters of nasal and nasopharyngeal anatomy including the size of the adenoid tissue. Results have confirmed significant evidence that adenoid hyperplasia is the commonest etiologic factor in children with snoring (p < .001). In addition, an important statistical relevance of mouth breathing in snoring was demo

[Surgical treatment of snoring by correction of nasal and oropharyngeal obstruction].

32 patients with habitual snoring and 2 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome underwent nasal and/or palatopharyngeal surgery. 12 patients with combined nasal septoplasty, submucous resection of the inferior turbinate bones and palatopharyngoplasty gained total relief from snoring. The same result was achieved in 10 children with removal of extremes of tonsillar and adenoid enlargement. From 7 patients with nasal surgery alone 4 experienced total improvement in the snoring, 3 perceived no long-term relief. 3 adults with PPP alone gained some change in their snoring. Myopathy of the upper airway in snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: Previous reports of muscle changes in the upper airways of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients have primarily been attributed to acquired nerve lesions due to snoring vibrations. The aim of this study was to investigate whether alterations reflecting muscle fiber injuries also occur in the upper respiratory tract of snoring and OSA patients and if these changes relate to upper airway dysfunction. METHODS: Muscle changes in biopsies from the soft palate of 20 patients suffering from snoring and OSA were investigated with enzyme, immunohistochemical, and morphometric techniques. B

Associations of snoring frequency and intensity in pregnancy with time-to-delivery.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, little is known about the association of SDB with timing of delivery. We examined the association of snoring frequency, a key SDB marker, and snoring intensity, a correlate of SDB severity, with time-to-delivery among a cohort of pregnant women. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 1483 third trimester pregnant women were recruited from the University of Michigan prenatal clinics. Women completed a questionnaire about their sleep, and demographic and pregnancy information was abstracted from m

The effects of oropharyngeal-lingual exercises in patients with primary snoring.

Primary snoring (PS) is one of the sleep breathing disorders with suboptimal results of treatment. It is recommended that Oropharyngeal exercises can be a therapeutic choice for the patients with mild to moderate degrees of PS. We assessed the effects of oropharyngeal-lingual (OPL) exercises on patients with primary snoring (PS) referred to Amiralmomenin University Hospital, Rasht, Iran in 2012. Fifty-three patients with PS underwent the sets of OPL exercises for 3 months, 5 days a week, and 30 min a day under the supervision of a speech therapist. Severity of the snoring was assessed by use o

Upper airway symptoms in primary snoring and in sleep apnea.

CONCLUSIONS: Upper airway symptoms were common in subjects referred for sleep study. In particular, nasal stuffiness and airway dryness already seemed to bother snorers before development of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Mouth dryness increased with severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OBJECTIVES: Upper airway symptoms are common in patients with OSAS. However, prevalence of these symptoms is unknown in primary snoring and mild OSA. We evaluated frequency of upper airway symptoms in a large group of patients referred for diagnostic sleep studies. METHODS: We examined 524 con

Functional treatment of snoring based on the tongue-repositioning manoeuvre.

Orofacial biofunction comprises muscular and physical effects, which may contribute to stabilization of the oropharyngeal airway. The tongue-repositioning manoeuvre (TRM) provides physical stabilization of the tongue and the soft palate together with, as a prerequisite, a nasal breathing mode. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of a TRM treatment concept on primary snoring. The TRM was used to achieve a closed biofunctional rest position of the orofacial system and to re-educate the nasal breathing pattern. Pressure indicating oral shields were used for home exercises a
