In modern soccer, fitness and fatigue monitoring tools tend to be focused on noninvasive, time-efficient and player-friendly measures. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been suggested as an effective method for monitoring training response and readiness to perform. However, there is still a lack of consensus on HRV monitoring when it comes to soccer. Thus, this scoping review aims to map existing evidence on HRV in professional and semiprofessional soccer settings, and to identify knowledge gaps to inform future research directions. A search of databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google

Coaching a youth soccer player is important, and the coach's role is key. Actually, there is no profile or coaching program for grassroots-soccer coaches that favor the practice of soccer and disability, according to different research and experts. The main purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the professional profile of the grassroots-soccer coach who has soccer players with disabilities (learning and coaching context). This research applies a quantitative method, specifically, non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive, and inferential methodology. The sample of analysis is t

UNLABELLED: Concussion is a common complaint among adult and adolescent athletes around the world and poses a safety risk in competitive, recreational, and noncontact sports. It is estimated that concussions occur at a rate of 0.5 per 1000 playing hours; however, the precision of this estimate is uncertain due to variations in the interpretation and reporting of concussions. Athletes with a history of concussions are more likely to sustain additional concussions, which can result in cognitive decline, depression, and early degenerative change. In order to lessen the likelihood of future diffic

Understanding the traumatic mechanisms of ankle injuries in soccer is crucial for an accurate and complete MRI diagnosis. Many ankle injuries share universal mechanisms seen in other athletic activities, but certain patterns are found to be more specific and relatively unique to soccer. Ankle impingement syndromes encountered in soccer encompass a spectrum of disorders that include anterior and posterior impingement categories, with anterior impingement representing pathology relatively specific to soccer. Lateral ligamentous sprains are one of the most common injuries; however, there is a hig

Sleep promotes health, well-being, recovery and athletic performance. As a consequence, sleep problems in athletes may have detrimental effects. Previous investigations showed that professional athletes often reported to suffer of poor sleep quality and insomnia (e.g. difficulties falling asleep and/or maintaining sleep). However, psychological variables exacerbating and maintaining insomnia in professional athletes as well as its mechanistic pathways are still largely unknown. Available literature mostly focused on effects of sport-related variables, such as evening training and stimulant con

A 24-yr-old male soccer player presented with a 7-yr history of left posterior knee "looseness." Evaluation 7 yrs ago, at the time of initial injury, revealed atraumatic anterior and posterior cruciate ligament sprains. On representation, the patient described the pain as a constant, dull ache, 3/10, but his biggest complaint was this feeling of "instability" and looseness where his knee would "buckle" 3-4 times a week. Physical examination was positive for grade 1 posterior drawer and grade 1 posterior sag signs. Reverse KT-1000 testing showed a 3-mm side-to-side difference. Sonographic evalu

BACKGROUND: Wearable sensor systems have the potential to quantify head kinematic responses of head impacts in soccer. However, on-field use of sensors (eg, accelerometers) remains challenging, owing to poor coupling to the head and difficulties discriminating low-severity direct head impacts from inertial loading of the head from human movements, such as jumping and landing.
PURPOSE: To test the validity of an in-ear sensor for quantifying head impacts in youth soccer.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: First, the sensor was mounted to a Hybrid III headform and impacted w

Hamstring strain injury (HSI) is one of the most prevalent and severe injury in professional soccer. The purpose was to analyze and compare the predictive ability of a range of machine learning techniques to select the best performing injury risk factor model to identify professional soccer players at high risk of HSIs. A total of 96 male professional soccer players underwent a pre-season screening evaluation that included a large number of individual, psychological and neuromuscular measurements. Injury surveillance was prospectively employed to capture all the HSI occurring in the 2013/2014

The human uterus has no pacemaker or motor innervation, yet develops rhythmic, powerful contractions that increase intrauterine pressure to dilate the cervix and force the fetus through the pelvis. To achieve the synchronous contractions required for labor, the muscle cells of the uterus act as independent oscillators that become increasingly coupled by gap junctions toward the end of pregnancy. The oscillations are facilitated by changes in resting membrane potential that occur as pregnancy progresses. Reductions of potassium channels in the myocyte membranes in late pregnancy prolong myocyte

Soccer, which has a large number of participants, has a high injury incidence that causes both financial and time burdens. Therefore, knowledge about the epidemiology of soccer injuries could allow sports-medicine professionals, such as physicians and physiotherapists, to direct their work in specific preventive programs. Thus, our aim was to conduct an epidemiological survey of injuries sustained by professional soccer players from the same team who participated in the Brazilian championship premier league in 2009. To this end, we evaluated retrospectively player medical records from the team

BACKGROUND: Altitude training is used by elite athletes to improve sports performance, but it may also disrupt sleep. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of 2 weeks at high altitude on the sleep of young elite athletes.
METHODS: Participants (n=10) were members of the Australian under-17 soccer team on an 18-day (19-night) training camp in Bolivia, with six nights at near sea level in Santa Cruz (430 m) and 13 nights at high altitude in La Paz (3600 m). Sleep was monitored using polysomnography during a baseline night at 430 m and three nights at 3600 m (immediately after ascent,

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of ankle braces on kicking accuracy, speed, and agility in competitive, nonelite soccer players. We hypothesized that the use of ankle bracing would significantly decrease performance in soccer-specific drills immediately after use but not after acclimation to the brace.
DESIGN: A prospective randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: University.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty healthy recreational adult soccer players (5 men and 15 women; mean age, 23 ± 4.8 years) without a history of lower extremity injury in the past 6 months. All the subjects completed the study.
