Identifying patterns and predictors of social health in adolescence using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Social health, having an adequate quantity and quality of social relationships, is essential for well-being but understudied during adolescence compared to adulthood. We sought to identify patterns and predictors of social health by characterizing peer relationships among 10,050 adolescents (10-13 years old, 4,815 girls, 53.68% non-Hispanic White) in Year 2 of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. To characterize social health profiles, we applied latent profile analysis on peer variables collected in Year 2: number of friends (close, general), aggression, victimization, relationsh

The impact of neoliberal "political attack" on health: the case of the "Scottish effect".

The health impact of neoliberal "shock treatment" has been explored in relation to the former USSR, but much remains to be done to ascertain its impact elsewhere. The authors consider the "Scottish Effect" in health-the unexplained excess mortality in Scotland, compared with the rest of Britain, after accounting for deprivation. A prevalent but as yet untested view is that this effect is linked to the neoliberal "political attack" against the organized working class, implemented by the post-1979 U.K. Conservative governments. The article begins to develop and test this view in the form of a "p

Impact of health literacy, social support, and socioeconomic position on the serum uric acid level in asymptomatic hyperuricaemia patients in China: a structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: Hyperuricaemia (HUA) poses a significant public health challenge on a global scale. It is mostly asymptomatic hyperuricemia (AHU) with unsatisfactory recognition and control rates. The role of health literacy in influencing health outcomes is of utmost importance, and enhancing health literacy is helpful for patients in managing risk factors. Additionally, social support and socioeconomic position (SEP) have been identified as potential factors influencing health. However, the exact relationships between these factors and AHU remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the stat

Level of education, use of oral contraceptives and reproductive factors: the Tromsø Study.

High social class has been linked to increased risk of breast cancer. The present study elaborates the associations between a frequently-used indicator of social class, length of education, and some reproductive factors associated with risk of breast cancer (age at menarche, the number of children, age at first pregnancy and use of oral contraceptives) in 8030 women in Tromsø, Norway. We found a weak negative association between level of education and age at menarche and a stronger negative association with parity. Women with high level of education tended to have their first pregnancy relativ

Leisure-time physical activity participation and subjective class identity among Chinese residents: evidence from CGSS 2021.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective class identity is shaped not only by objective socioeconomic resources, but also by everyday experiences through which individuals evaluate their bodies, lives, and social relations. Although physical activity is often studied as a health behavior, leisure-time exercise, sports, and fitness may also function as socially meaningful lifestyle practices. METHODS: Using data from the 2021 China General Social Survey, this study examines the association between regular leisure-time physical activity and subjective class identity among Chinese residents, and further assesse

The power of the 'universal': caste and missionary medical discourses of alcoholism in the Telugu print sphere, 1900-1940.

This article explores missionary medical discourses in three Telugu journals published in the early twentieth century, to analyse how caste pivoted denunciations of alcohol, especially toddy and arrack, in the Madras Presidency and the Hyderabad state. It argues that one women's missionary journal, Vivekavathi, deployed medical knowledge to formulate subtle and occasionally explicit condemnations of toddy and arrack as unclean and unhealthy substances. The journal relied on universal medical and missionary, British and American knowledge frameworks to mark out Dalits and other marginalised cas

Socioeconomic status and use of analgesic drugs before and after primary hip arthroplasty: a population-based cohort study of 103,209 patients during 1996-2018.

Background and purpose - Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective and common procedure. However, persistent pain and analgesic requirement up to 2 years after THA surgery are common. We examined the trends in the utilization of analgesics before and after THA, overall, and in relation to socioeconomic status (SES) in a populationbased cohort. Patients and methods - We used the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register to identify 103,209 patients who underwent THA between 1996 and 2018. Data on prescriptions and SES markers was obtained from Danish medical databases. Prevalence rates of redeemed pr

Socioeconomic position, immune function, and its physiological markers.

The development of costly traits such as immune function and secondary sexual traits is constrained by resource availability. The quality of developmental conditions and the availability of resources in ontogeny may therefore influence immune system functions and other biological traits. We analyzed causal pathways between family socioeconomic position, strength of immune response, and five physiological biomarkers in young Latvian men (n = 93) using structural equation modeling. Men from wealthier families had higher testosterone levels (rs = 0.280), stronger immune response (rs = 0.551), and

Predicting dropout using student- and school-level factors: An ecological perspective.

High school dropout has been associated with negative outcomes, including increased rates of unemployment, incarceration, and mortality. Dropout rates vary significantly depending on individual and environmental factors. The purpose of our study was to use an ecological perspective to concurrently explore student- and school-level predictors associated with dropout for the purpose of better understanding how to prevent it. We used the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 dataset. Participants included 14,106 sophomores across 684 public and private schools. We identified variables of interest

Sociodemographic, psychosocial and clinical factors associated with uptake of genetic counselling for hereditary cancer: a systematic review.

Evidence suggests that a significant proportion of individuals referred to cancer genetic counselling (GC) do not attend, and thus may not be engaged in adequate cancer risk management. We aimed to review the literature to better understand barriers to accessing GC and how they may be overcome. We conducted a systematic literature search for articles examining factors influencing cancer GC uptake as well as motivators and barriers to GC attendance. Factors were categorised as sociodemographic, psychosocial or clinical. The literature search identified 1413 citations, 35 of which met the inclus

Mechanisms Underlying the Association Between Early-Life Adversity and Physical Health: Charting a Course for the Future.

Early-life adversities (ELA) are associated with subsequent pervasive alterations across a wide range of neurobiological systems and psychosocial factors that contribute to accelerated onset of health problems and diseases. In this article, we provide an integrated perspective on recent developments in research on ELA, based on the articles published in this Special Issue of Psychosomatic Medicine. We focus on the following: 1) the distinction between specific versus general aspects of ELA with regard to the nature of exposure (e.g., physical and sexual abuse, emotional abuse or neglect, relat
