Communication, interventions, and scientific advances in autism: a commentary.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) affect approximately 1 in 150 children across the U.S., and are characterized by abnormal social actions, language difficulties, repetitive or restrictive behaviors, and special interests. ASD include autism (autistic disorder), Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS or atypical autism). High-functioning individuals may communicate with moderate-to-high language skills, although difficulties in social skills may result in communication deficits. Low-functioning individuals may have severe deficiencies in language

Benevolent voices are not so kind: the functional significance of auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: This study measures the impact of beliefs about auditory hallucinations on social functioning. SAMPLING AND METHODS: Twenty-nine subjects who met the ICD-10 criteria for schizophrenia or a schizo-affective disorder were included. Beliefs about voices and coping responses as measured by the Beliefs about Voices Questionnaire were compared with social functioning as assessed with the Life Skills Profile (LSP). RESULTS: The belief that voices are benevolent was associated with poor communication. Engagement with voices was correlated with the non-turbulence and the compliance factor

Perceived Family Functioning and Social Adaptation Levels in Patients with Depression.

Depression is not only an individual disorder but also a condition associated with family systems. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between perceived family functioning and social adaptation in adults diagnosed with depression. The sample consisted of 123 patients attending a state hospital psychiatric outpatient clinic. Data were collected using the Perceived Family Functioning Scale (PFFS) and Social Adaptation Self-Evaluation Scale (SASS). Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were performed. The mean PFFS and

First Diagnostic Questionnaire for Assessing Patients' Social Functioning: Comprehensive DDX3X Syndrome Patient Profile.

Background/Objectives: DDX3X syndrome is often misdiagnosed as autism spectrum disorder (ASD, Rett Syndrome, and Dandy-Walker Syndrome). Precise phenotyping is needed with reference to neurodevelopmental diagnosis. Observation of behavior and communication in parents with DDX3X syndrome in the USA, France, and Poland; conversations with the parents of patients; and rudimentary information in evidence-based medical articles prompted us to identify differences in communication, play, and social interaction between children with ASD only, those with both ASD and DDX3X, and those with DDX3X only.

A phase 2 clinical trial of a vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist shows improved adaptive behaviors in men with autism spectrum disorder.

There are no approved pharmacological therapies to address the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), namely, persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction and the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. The neuropeptide vasopressin has been implicated in the regulation of social behaviors, and its modulation has emerged as a therapeutic target for ASD. The phase 2 VANILLA clinical trial reported here evaluated balovaptan, an orally administered selective vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist, in 223 men with ASD and inte

The validity and reliability of the simplified Chinese version of the Social Communication Questionnaire.

This study aims to validate the simplified Chinese version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) in children aged 2-12 years from both general and clinical populations. We recruited 819 Chinese children in this study, including 505 typically developing (TD) children, 202 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 112 children with non-ASD neurodevelopmental disorders. All the children's parents completed the simplified Chinese version of the SCQ and all children with ASD were additionally assessed for intelligence and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale to confirm their diagnosis

[Selective mutism].

Selective mutism is a disorder closely linked to anxiety disorders in particular social phobia. Heightened sensitivity to emotional stress factors and coping with social anxiety may be part of the causes leading to the failure to speak. Follow-up studies confirm the fact that selective mutism is a very persistent disorder with a general tendency of poor outcome in particular if not intensively treated. Current treatment combines different modalities of cognitive-behavioural therapies which are aimed to reduce anxiety symptoms and to improve verbal communication. Enhancing of parent-child inter

Social phobia: prevalence and diagnostic threshold.

This article reviews the literature on the prevalence and demographic features of social phobia in both community and general medical settings. The age at onset of social phobia is examined, as are comorbid conditions. Important differences between social phobia as it appears in the community and in primary care settings are explored. We conclude that social phobia is common and associated with significant impairment in a number of life areas. We discuss the diagnostic threshold of social phobia and potential difficulties in differentiating this disorder from other mental disorders.

Venlafaxine in children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorders: an open retrospective clinical report.

Autism is characterized by social deficits, communication and language impairments, narrow restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, inattention, and hyperactivity. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have demonstrated efficacy in treating core symptoms of autism, norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors have demonstrated efficacy in symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). An open, retrospective clinical study with venlafaxine evaluated its effect on core symptoms of autism as well as associated features of ADHD. Ten consecutive subjects meeting Diagnostic and Statis

Toward specifying pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified.

Pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) is the most common and least satisfactory of the PDD diagnoses. It is not formally operationalized, which limits its reliability and has hampered attempts to assess its validity. We aimed, first, to improve the reliability and replicability of PDD-NOS by operationalizing its DSM-IV-TR description and, second, to test its validity through comparison with autistic disorder (AD) and Asperger's disorder (AsD). In a sample of 256 young people (mean age = 9.1 years) we used Developmental, Diagnostic and Dimensional (3Di) algorithmic

Communication impairments in mice lacking Shank1: reduced levels of ultrasonic vocalizations and scent marking behavior.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a strong genetic component. Core symptoms are abnormal reciprocal social interactions, qualitative impairments in communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior with restricted interests. Candidate genes for autism include the SHANK gene family, as mutations in SHANK2 and SHANK3 have been detected in several autistic individuals. SHANK genes code for a family of scaffolding proteins located in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. To test the hypothesis that a mutation in SHANK1 contributes to the symptoms of autism, w

"I Want to Be Alone, but I Don't Want to Be Lonely": Uncertainty Management Regarding Social Situations among College Students with Social Anxiety Disorder.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (iSAD) experience adverse outcomes in daily life due to the disorder (e.g., lower educational and work achievement compared to their healthy counterparts). They are prone to social isolation, even though they desire intimate interpersonal relationships. Yet, little research on iSAD is devoted to understanding in detail a) when they interpret social situations as social-anxiety-provoking, b) how this interpretation motivates their assessments of their efficacy and likely interaction outcomes, and c) how they choose specific information-seeking strategies

Structure of the autism symptom phenotype: A proposed multidimensional model.

BACKGROUND: The main objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive, empirical model that will allow the reorganization of the structure of the pervasive developmental disorder symptom phenotype through factor analysis into more homogeneous dimensions. METHOD: The sample consisted of 209 children with pervasive developmental disorder referred for genetic studies. The 12 subdomains of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised were used in a factor analysis, and the emerged factors were then correlated with independent variables (measures of cognition, adaptive function, and diagnostic su

Hoarding in Children and Adolescents with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Compared to studies in adults, there have been few studies of hoarding in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In the current study, we evaluated OCD clinical features, Axis I disorders, and social reciprocity scores in 641 children and adolescents with OCD, of whom 163 (25%) had hoarding compulsions and 478 did not. We found that, as a group, youth with hoarding had an earlier age at onset and more severe lifetime OCD symptoms, poorer insight, more difficulty making decisions and completing tasks, and more overall impairment. The hoarding group also had a greater

Asperger's disorder in adulthood: a case report.

Asperger's disorder is a pervasive development disorder. It involves qualitative disorders in social relationship and communication as well as restricted and repetitive interests and activities, with no delay in language acquisition. Although Asperger's disorder is an illness that begins in childhood, its diagnosis may frequently not be done until later stages. The case presented is about a 21 year old man with a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder who, after several admissions, was sent to the Rehabilitation Hospital Unit for stabilization and diagnostic study given the atypical features of

HD-tDCS effects on social impairment in autism spectrum disorder with sensory processing abnormalities: a randomized controlled trial.

This study examined the effects of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on those with and without sensory processing abnormalities. A randomized double-blind sham-controlled trial involved 72 children with ASD, divided into three groups based on sensory integration status. A post-hoc analysis of 51 children aged 4-8 years who received true HD-tDCS was conducted, categorizing them into hypo-tactile, hyper-tactile, and typical tactile sensitivity groups. Therapeutic efficacy was compared a

Screening for autism spectrum disorders in 12-month-old high-risk siblings by parental report.

This study examines whether parental report of social-communicative and repetitive behaviors at 12 months can be helpful in identifying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in younger siblings of children with ASD [high-risk (HR)-siblings]. Parents of HR-siblings and infants without a family history of ASD completed the First Year Inventory at 12 months. Developmental outcomes were based on 24- or 36-month assessments. HR-siblings later diagnosed with ASD showed greater impairments in social communication than those with other developmental outcomes based on parental and clinician ratings. Parental

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Classification, diagnosis and therapy.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, Asperger's syndrome (AS) and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). The new diagnostic criteria of ASD focuses on two core domains: social communication impairment and restricted interests/repetitive behaviors. The prevalence of ASD has been steadily increasing over the past two decades, with current estimates reaching up to 1 in 36 children. Hereditary factors, parental history of psychiatric disorders, pre-term births, and fetal exposure to psychotropic drugs or ins

Understanding mental health discourse on Reddit with transformers and explainability.

Social media is a powerful tool also for discussing mental health. The conversations that take place in these spaces provide a unique insight into how users talk about the issue. This study uses fine-tuned pretrained transformer models (BERT and MentalBERT), to classify Reddit posts about anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in specialised subreddits. By assessing how well subreddit conversations align with their intended mental health focus, the analysis ensures that these communities are effectively serving their purpose as support spaces.
